Re: Bridge on Rt. 9, crossing the Wappingers Lake
Home Rule Request
Dear Sir:
RECEIVED
APR 1 12003
SUPERVISOR'S OFFICE
TOWN OF WAPPINGER
On March 14, 2003, Peter C. Furnari passed away. He was laid to rest, ironically, on Election Day,
Tuesday, March Ie, in the Village he loved so much and called home.
Pete was the department head for the Industrial Arts Department at Wappingers Central School District for
over 30 years, during which time he served as the Mayor of the Village of Wappingers Falls from 1962 to
1972. His administration was responsible for modernizing the village by establishing zoning, a zoning
board of appeals, bringing water to the east side of the village, annexing properties east of route 9,
personally building a total of 58 houses in his spare time, which have become homes within the
community, as well as other accomplishments. However, the one achievement he was most proud of was
the "Save the Lake Campaign", that resulted in the purchase of the Wappingers Lake and the reparian
rights upstream to the Red Oaks Mill Dam for the Village of Wappingers Falls, preserving the lake's
historical and recreational value for future generations.
Although a man of humility, thinking he never accomplished much, he certainly made a difference in may
lives, whether through teaching and developing minds, giving back to the community through the Lions
Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Village Fire Service, or serving as Mayor of the Village of Wappingers
Falls. Because of his many accomplishments and his impact on the community in which he lived and
loved, we ask that the bridge that passes over his beloved lake, on Route 9, be named in his memory as the
Peter C. Furnari Memorial Bridge. We feel that it would be befitting and seek your support to honor this
Home Rule Request.
Sincerely,
Ron & Bev. Bischoff
The Furnari Family
