The Commission, after being notified by the planning board, makes an an the sight inspection of the proposed property. The Commission can either take the property or take money in its stead. The monies axe then set aside for recreation development in other: -.areas. Once a deed for the property is received by the town, then the area can be developed for recreation. In 1972 a comprehensive plan was completedby a consultant firm. The Cbzmission uses the plan to help make the decision as to take land or monies. This plan covers the town including long range plans and present facilities both town and private. The Commission sent out questionaires through the Wappinger Shopper and completed a survey of what the town people would like to have for recreation. From this survey the Commission has formed a group of interested citizens,to formulate plans for our future needs. The Commission has met with Dr. Young to discuss the use of school facilities, thereby reducing the chances of duplicating facilities. Page 3 DIRECTOR The Recreation Commission has a paid director to run the various programs, arrange facilities, obtain directors and aides for both summer and winter programs, initiate new programs and submit a budget each year for the programs. The final decisions as to what programs and what personnel are used are made by the Commission. Our present director is Mrs. Laura Zick. Mrs. Zick also submits a story each week to the Southern Dutchess News listing events now being conducted and also future dates of the coming events. New programs can only be started by people letting the Commission know that the interest is there for the program. Page 4 PRESENT MEMBERS Mr. Hugh J. Maurer — Chairman Mrs. Theresa Arkell — Vice—Chairman Mr. George Schlathaus — Member Mr. Richard Garren — Member Mr. Joseph Ennesser — Member Mrs. Jean Beahan — Member Mrs. Mary Schmalz — Member Mrs. Laura Zick — Director Mrs. Deborah Ruit — Secretary MEETINGS The regular monthly meeting is held on the first Thursday of each month. The meetings are open to anyone who wishes to attend and anyone wishing to submit an idea to the Commission should contact the secretary of one of the members so the Commission can set a date to hear about the proposal. Special meetings can be called if required. Page 5 The Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission has the responsibility to not only conduct a recre6tion program but also to make capital improvement on land acquired for recreation. The budget is based upon these expenditures and therefore may seem high. Each year monies are put in the budget for bath development and new construction. Due to the revenue sharing monies the Commission was able to start development of the tennis courts at Martz Field sooner than ezpected. Unfortunately the town does not allow the Commission to set aside monies each year so that enough can be accumulated to do a project. The Town must either allot the Commission money that year or have the town vote on a bond issue.
