SMITH SUPERVISOR As you are probably aware, our Little League suffered another tragedy this past summer. A twelve year old boy, a member of our Little League died as a result of a freak accident. This young man and his parents have been active in the Little League program for a number of years. There is a group headed by Dr. Armen Manasar that would like to do something for the Little League in the memory of this young man. Specifically, they would like to erect two batting cages at Robinson Lane. We, the Recreation Commission, have reviewed their plans and feel the addition of these batting cages not only would provide a lasting memory to Corey Castellano, but it would be a welcome addition to the Robinson Lane Recreation Park and to the boys and girls of the Little League Program. The Town of Wappinger Little League has agreed to maintain and to supervise its usage. They also, desire and we concur that a sign 4 or 5 ft. by 7 or 8 ft. be fastened to the side of the cage. This sign would be of a lasting material and have affixed to it the names of significant contributors on small metal plates. (What a significant contribution would be has not been determined.) This sign, would bear the name of the young man. The Recreation Commission would hold the right to remove the sign at the end of a two year period or before if its maintenance was not handled properly. We seek the Town's approval to let this group proceed. The cost of these batting cages would be estimated at $10,000. They would like to get started in raising the funds. We, the Recreation Commission are in favor of this effort. Please provide us with your support. His premature passing was when he still was serving as a manager. 4. Thomas B. Fedoush Tom participated in the Little League program from the time he was 6 until he was 18. He was an All-Star in Little League, Senior League and Big Boy League. He brought honor to our Program. 5. Jeannette T. Pallino Jeannette was also in Little League. Her circumstances were much like Jason Smith. She played softball and at the young age of 14 passed away. Town Board Page 2 March 12, 1992 6. Jason E. Smith I'm sure we are all familiar with Jason's story. We the Recreation Commission request your approval on the above submitted names. The expense for the stone and the engravings will be borne by the "Friends of Jason E. Smith" Committee. Any additional names to be added to the stone after approval of the Town Board will be borne by the Organization/Group submitting the name. RaIP Chairman RJH:mbr January 26, 1992 Her Honorable Constance Smith Town Supervisor 'own of Wappingers Middlebush Road Wappinger Falls, New York 12590 Dear Mro. Smith: After the untimely death of Jason Eric Smith, a thirteen year old resident of Wappinger Falls last October, Mr. James Whalen and myself discussed, some way of dedicating either a ball field or a plaque at the Robinson Lane fields. the reasoning for choosing Robinson Lane was due to Jason's longstanding involvement in the towns Little League Program. His entire family has been actively involved in the program for 15 years. As a result of our discussions, Mr. Whalen contacted an ind.ividual who offered to donate a marble stone, at no cost to either the town or the little league, to commeorate Jasons life. After this generous offer was received, we began to make contacts with other people in this community, and found overwhelming support for this idea. It was thought, that maybe a stone or plaque by the flagpole at Robinson Lane would. be more appropriate, a dedication than a field. This was at the suggestion of Jasons friends, who would meet with him there, before or after their activities at the fields. On or about the early part of November, Mr. Whalen and I made a presentation to the Little League, at their hoards Reorganizational Meeting, presenting them with the documentation that we had obtained.. We asked the board for their permission to pl,`:%ace the stone at Robinson Lane in the flower garden around. the"flab; pole. The stone was described as•''being Marble, 10" by 20j" with a height of 4" in the front and 6" in the rear. (Please see photograph of a similar stone). They were advised that the stone, when set would, be 2 inches above the ground.inthe front and 4 inches in the rear, keeping it very low to the ground. It would weigh approximatley 150 pounds, therefore making it unlikely to be tampered with. We had. suggestions of possible wordings .for the dedication to celebrate Jasonslife, but left it open for more discussions. Mr. Whalen and my husband have measured. the site and. space is available. We have been advised that Robinson Lane is a town field, and permission must come from the town, and thus we hereby officially request the towns permission to go ahead. with the commeration of Jasons life. We welcome any ideas that you may have regarding the dedication or its placement at Robinson Lane. We would be available at any time to discuss this with you. We thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
