Recognizing The Passing Of Elouise Maxey, President Of The Northern Dutchess NAACP
At a Regular Meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New
York, held at Town Hall, 20 Middlebush Road, Wappingers Falls, New York, on June 28, 2021.
The meeting was called to order by Richard Thurston, Town Supervisor, and upon roll being
called, the following was recorded:

The following Resolution was introduced by Councilwoman Bettina and seconded by Casella.
WHEREAS, Elouise Maxey was born in Savannah, Georgia, in the 1940s and raised in that state, and
WHEREAS, "Miss Elouise," as she was known to many, had taken part in the March on Washington in
1963, and the Selma to Montgomery March with Dr. Martin Luther King in 1965, and
WHEREAS, she also owned her own business, a soul food restaurant in the Bronx, before settling in the
Hudson Valley and leading the Northern Dutchess NAACP for two decades, and
WHEREAS, Miss Elouise has been a dear friend to both elected officials and residents alike in the great
Town of Wappinger, and
WHEREAS, last Tuesday, two days before President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a
federal holiday, Maxey died at the age of 76, and
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger does
hereby, with a heavy heart, lower the flags to half-staff at the Memorial Plaza in front of Wappinger Town
Hall in memory of Elouise Maxey.
The foregoing was put to a vote which resulted as follows:
