2023-38 2023-38 Resolution Introducing "Local Law No. 2 Of The Year 2023, Amending Chapter 221 Of The Code Of The Town Of Wappinger To Enact A Property Tax Exemption For Volunteer Firefighters And Ambulance Workers Pursuant To Section 466-A Of The Real Property Tax Law" At a Regular Meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York, held at Town Hall, 20 Middlebush Road, Wappingers Falls, New York, on March 13, 2023. WHEREAS, on December 9, 2022, the State of New York enacted Real Property Tax Law (RPTL) § 466-a, which empowers all local governments with an to provide a property tax exemption to volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers; and WHEREAS, volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers provide critically vital lifesaving services to the Town of Wappinger while reducing the tax burden on the taxpayers of the Town; and WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger desires to enact this exemption to thank the volunteer firefighters for their service, encourage retention of volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers and to provide incentive for future volunteers to join; and WHEREAS, the enabling legislation enacted by the State Legislature requires that local governments adopt a local law in order to afford those volunteers such exemption, and hold a public hearing prior to its adoption; and WHEREAS, the Town Board has determined that this action does not affect the environment and is not subject to SEQRA; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED,that the Town Board hereby introduces for consideration of its adoption a proposed Local Law entitled "Amending Chapter 221 of the Code of the Town of Wappinger to Enact a Property Tax Exemption for Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers Pursuant to Section 466-a of the Real Property Tax Law", in the form annexed hereto; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,that the Town Board hereby schedules a Public Hearing on the adoption of the proposed Local Law to be held at Town Hall, 20 Middlebush Road, Wappingers Falls, New York on the 10th day of April, 2023, at 7:00 p.m., and the Town Clerk is directed to post the Notice of the Public Hearing in the form annexed hereto and to publish same in the Southern Dutchess News and Poughkeepsie Journal as required by law.
