Resolution Honoring Black History Month In The Town Of Wappinger
At a Regular Meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York, held
at Town Hall, 20 Middlebush Road, Wappingers Falls,
New York, on February 12, 2024.

The following Resolution was introduced by Councilwoman Bettina and seconded by Casella.
WHEREAS, each February, Black History Month celebrates the many achievements and contributions made by African
Americans to our economic, cultural, spiritual, and political development and is deserving of recognition and honor, and
WHEREAS, Black History Month grew out of the work of prominent African Americans including noted historian Carter G.
Woodson, who founded what is known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and
who founded an initial commemorative week that inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local
festivities, establish history clubs and, host performances and lectures that have since morphed into a month-long
celebration, and
WHEREAS, in 1976, President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month and called upon the public to
"seize the opportunity to honor the too -often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor
throughout our history;", and
WHEREAS, a key element of dialogue on Race, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is celebrating the diversity of cultures that
we are proud to have as part of our community, and promoting an inclusive community in which all residents -past,
present, and future -are respected and treated equally, and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Joseph D. Cavaccini, Town Supervisor of the Town of Wappinger, and the
members of the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger, do hereby acknowledge Black History Month in the Town of
Wappinger, and encourage our residents to honor and commemorate the history of African Americans in our community,
state and nation.
The foregoing was put to a vote which resulted as follows:
