DISCUSSION
Fun Central - To discuss Appeal No. 98-7023 to expand the existing pylon sign located at 1155
Route 9 in the Town of Wappinger.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence were present.
Mrs. Lawrence explained to the Board that business is slow in the winter. They have a hard time
meeting their expenses and keeping the payroll going because people do not realize they are
open. They want to expand the existing sign to display the hours of operation, specials and party
packages to try to generate more business.
Mr. Prager asked if they advertise in other ways.

Mrs. Lawrence said they do. They have to operate on a budget and it limits them since sales are
so slow in the winter.
Mr. Prager asked if the sign alone would make a difference.
Mrs. Lawrence said yes.
Mr. Prager asked her if she has any statistics to show it would help.
Mrs. Lawrence said no.
Mr. Warren asked if they have seen a decrease in customers.
Mrs. Lawrence said they have seen a decrease because of Discovery Zone, Ultra Zone just
opened and Splash Down has expanded. There is more competition in the area. She said they
advertise in the Poughkeepsie Journal in the enjoy section and some radio stations.
Mr. Fanuele asked about the existing sign.
Mrs. Lawrence explained some kids broke the existing sign. Therefore, they want to replace the
existing sign with a larger sign. The sign company recommended 6 inch lettering. They felt it
%MW would be read easily. She stated their existing sign is not out by the road.
Mr. Fanuele asked how far back the sign is located from Route 9.
Mr. Close did not know.
Mr. Prager stated people driving by can see the existing sign.
Mrs. Lawrence agreed.
Mr. Lehigh questioned if people driving by at 40+ miles an hour will be able to read the sign.
Mrs. Lawrence said yes. She said sometime the traffic is backed up coming the other direction
towards Dairy Queen.
Mr. Prager stated the Board received a letter from DC Planning. They are not in favor of
expanding the sign.
Mr. Fanuele stated the property on the corner of New Hackensack Road and Route 9 is going to
be developed. They will be coming in for a sign permit. If someone gets a bigger sign, then
everyone else will want one too. He suggested maybe they could keep the same size sign, but
put it closer to the road.
""'r' Mrs. Lawrence said they want to advertise as much as they can out by the road.
Mr. Lehigh made a motion for the ZBA to be appointed the Lead Agency.
