Dear Supervisor Smith:
Upon completion of our preliminary realignment and geometric
modifications, we would like to submit our proposal and subsequent
construction costs for the above referenced project.
Due to the steep grade of the existing road starting at the entrance to
Greystone, an extensive excavation will be required to insure that the
proposed vertical realignment conforms with AASHTO and Town
Specifications. A problem associated with the extensive cut is the
existence of rock. By visual inspection of this area and the steepness of
the existing road, we can safely say that blasting will be required on this
project. The blasting will not only generate concern by the residents,
but will increase the construction cost of the project.
We have looked into reducing the amount of excavation required by
adjusting the proposed modifications. However, the resulting geometric
alignment would not comply with design standards.
Another modification included in our proposal is the widening of the
roadway pavement. The existing pavement width varies throughout the
project area from 12 to 18 feet. We have proposed a pavement width
of 22 feet, but this could be reduced to 20 feet if need be. By widening
the roadway, the existing stone walls on both sides of the road will have
to be relocated. In additions, grading outside of the road right-of-way
will have to be performed, requiring temporary grading easements.

One last item of concern is drainage. There is an existing storm line on
the east side of the road from Greystone to the high point of the road.
At this time we are not sure of the condition of the storm line because
an inspection could not be completed without a machine to lift the
grates off the basins. However, the pipe looks to be concrete, and
therefore, should be in working condition.
We have included modification to the existing storm line along with
extending the system with new basins and ADSN-12 (plastic) pipe. We
have enclosed a cost estimate for the proposed work for your review
and comment.
In closing, the work required to brin~ the road into compliance with
design standards and specifications IS extensive. Due to the extent of
the work, many residents will have concerns, and we feel that a public
information meeting should be arranged if the Town decides to proceed
with the realignment.

and to schedule a public meeting, if so required.
