TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
TRAILER
FRAME: The frame is made from 3/16" wall x 2" x 6" rectangular tubing with a 3/8" wall x 4" x 6"
main center beam. All joints are welded solid and junction points are plated for strength. Tongue
weight of chipper varies from approximately 1000 to 1300 Ibs., depending on power unit selection
and other optional features.
AXLE: The standard axle is an 8000 lb. rated Dexter Torflex with electric brakes. Track width is
76" to center of tires. Tandem axle units have (2) 6000 lb. Torflex axles, both with electric brakes.
Dually units have a single, 10,000 lb. axle with electric brakes.
TIRES: Single axle with single tire and tandem axle units have 16 ply, load range 'H' 235/75 RH.5
tires with 8-bolt rims. Load capacity of each tire is 6005 Ibs. (2724 kg) @ 125 psi (862 kpa). Units
with single axle, dual wheels have L T245/75 R16 load range 'E' tires with 8-bolt rims. Load
capacity (dual) of each tire is 2778 Ibs. (1260 kg) @ 80 psi (550 kpa).
JACK: The tongue ja~k is a Bulldog 10,000 lb. stationary mounted, retractable jack.
FENDERS: Standard fenders are 10 gauge formed steel with inner splash guards. Anti-skid
material is placed on top of fenders to provide a safe platform for performing maintenance.
LIGHTS: Taillights are four function (stop, left turn, right turn, running lights), mounted at bottom
corners of the infeed housing, and are hermetically sealed. Marker lights and reflectors are in
place to meet DOT specifications. A removable, coiled cable is equipped with a Cole-Hersee 6
pole electrical connector.
WEIGHT: Machines with four cylinder diesel engines weigh approximately 9300 Ibs. Machines
with six cylinder engines weigh approximately 10,300 Ibs.
CHIPPER
CHIPPER HOUSING: The lower chipper housing is constructed with 3/8" sides with 1" thick,
gusseted mounting pads for the chipper bearings. Housing is machined to accept one pillow
block bearing on each side for maximum chipper drum support. Housing bottom is 3/8" from
anvil to discharge to and 3/4" from anvil to the front of the housing. The anvil block is 1/2". The
anvil block and 3/4" receiving plate before the anvil are reinforced for strength. Anvil is 1/2" x 3
3/4" X 21" abrasion resistant (AR) steel plate. The anvil has four wear edges.
CHIPPER HOOD: The chipper hood is 1/4" plate steel. It is pinned to the lower housing by means
of a l' diameter pin extending fully across the top of the hood. The hood is hinged at the
discharge end to allow the transition to be tilted back if necessary. An engine safety stop device
is activated when the pin is removed, to prevent the ability of the engine to run when the chipper
hood is open.
CHIPPER DRUM: prum is constructed with 1/2" thick end plates, 1/2" thick center reinforcement
plate. The drum surface is 1/2" plate steel, rolled to a 36" outside diameter. The knife pockets are
welded in the circumference at 90-degree increments. There are four pockets per drum, making a
total of two full cuts per revolution. The chipper shaft is 2 15/16" diameter stress proof steel,
ground and polished. Shaft is secured to drum with two removable taper lock bushings, one on
each side of the drum. Finished size of the drum (without the shaft) is 36" diameter x 23 1/2" wide.
Weight of total drum assembly (including shaft and fan impeller) is approximately 1240 Ibs. Drum
speed is approximately 1225 rpm.
CHIPPER DRUM AIR IMPELLER: A 36" diameter, 4-bladed fan impeller is located in a separate
chamber integrated into the chipper base. The impeller attaches to the chipper drum shaft with a
taper lock bushing.
KNIFE POCKETS: The welded-in pockets are made from 1 1/2"plate steel on each end and 3/8"
plate steel on the front, back and bottom. The end plates are machined, drilled, and tapped to
accept replaceable knife holders. The holders are secured to the pocket by four 3/4" grade eight
bolts.
CHIPPER CONTINUED:
KNIFE HOLDERS: Knife holders are replaceable, made from 3 1/4" thick x 3 1/2" wide x 13 1/2"
long forged steel. The holder accepts a 1/2" thick x 5" x 10 1/2" double-edged chipper knife. The
knives attach to the holders with 3/4" NF grade 8 bolts, 4 per knife.
INFEED SYSTEM
IN FEED CHUTE: Chute is made of 1/4" steel on its top and sides, 3/8" on the floor. It flares from
30" wide x 20" high at the feed wheels, to 65" wide x 38" high at the outer edge of the infeed. The
length from the pinch point of the feed wheels to the operator ground level exceeds 85". The
infeed is equipped with a control bar across the top and down both sides to operate the feed
system. The control is set up to out-feed when the bar is pushed toward the chipper. The entire
infeed is bolted on and may be removed from the chipper, if necessary. Loading height of chipper
floor is 20".
BOTTOM FEED WHEEL: The feed wheel is 29 1/2" wide x 9 1/2" in diameter, with knife bars
welded to its outer edge. Feed wheel shaft is 2 7/16" diameter and is welded to the feed wheel end
plates. A hydraulic motor drives the feed wheel, utilizing a double row 60-chain coupler.
TOP FEED WHEEL: The feed wheel is 29 1/2" wide x 18" in diameter with knife bars welded to its
outer edge. Feed wheel shaft is 2 7/16" diameter and is welded to the feed wheel end plates. For
high torque, the feed wheel is driven at a 3 to 1 ratio by the hydraulic motor, using 60H chain and
sprockets.
TOP FEED WHEEL PIVOT ARM: Pivot arm is constructed with a 1/4" thick, box-type construction
across the top, with 3/8" thick end plates for the bearing mounts. This assembly is attached the
chipper with (2) 2" diameter pins that mount through fiber bushings. Down pressure is provided
by (2) 3 1/2" outside diameter springs with 7/16" coils. The pivot arm assembly can be lifted for
maintenance by using a hydraulic valve located on the side of the infeed. The assembly can be
locked in the 'up' position using the l' diameter pin that is provided.
GREASE POINTS: Depending on various options the chipper may be equipped with, the chipper
has up to 21 grease fittings to reach with a grease gun. Standard units have the following: (4) on
pivot arm pins, (4) feed wheel bearings, (2) discharge transition flange, (2) feed wheel lift cylinder
pins, and (4) Twin Disc clutch. Options with grease fittings are: (1) manual crank swivel
discharge, and (4) hydraulic powered winch. The chipper bearings do not have grease fittings.
They should be cleaned and re-packed twice yearly with a high quality EP-2 lithium based grease
with a 3000 rating.
HYDRAULICS
PUMP: Hydraulic pump is a Vickers V-10 vane type operating at a speed to produce a minimum of
9 gpm. The pump is located on the auxiliary drive of the engine to provide live hydraulics.
VALVES: Control valves are Gresen V-20, in a stack that allows the addition of additional
functions in the same bank. The feed wheel control handle has adjustable stops to protect the
valve from abuse. Hydraulic relief pressure is set at 2500 psi.
BOTTOM WHEEL MOTOR: White Roller Stator 45 cubic inch displacement. The shaft is keyed to
accept a sprocket and bushing.
TOP WHEEL MOTOR: White Roller Stator 22.8 cubic inch displacement. The shaft is keyed to
accept a sprocket and bushing.
TANK: Hydraulic tank is welded construction, 10 gauge steel with a lockable, vented cap. A ball
valve is located at the outlet to shut off oil flow when required. A float type level indicator is
provided. The tank is equipped with an internal baffle to insure cooling capability. Capacity is 21
gallons.
FILTER: Hydraulic filter is a LE-10 (10 micron) element with internal bypass. Spin-on type.
HOSES AND FITTINGS: Hydraulic hoses are 2-wire braid. Motors, valves, and pumps use O-ring
fittings.
HYDRAULICS CONTINUED:
HYDRAULIC FLUID: Environmentally safe, heavy duty, anti-wear, anti foaming. Viscosity Index
245. Minimum start up temperature -40oF (-400C). Operating range 10F (-HOC) to 1600F (710C).
DRIVE SYSTEMS
CLUTCH: 4-cylinder engines below 120 hp use a Twin Disc single plate clutch (SP111 HP3). 4-
cylinder engines over 125 hp and 6-cylinder engines up to 200 hp use a Twin Disc two-plate clutch
(SP211 HP3). Engines 250 hp and above use a Twin Disc three plate clutch (SP311 HP3).
BELTS: 4-cylinder engines use a 5 groove, 5VX1320 banded belt. 6-cylinder engines use (2) 4
groove, 5VX1400 banded belts. Engines 250 hp and above use (2) 5 groove, 5VX1500 banded
belts.
SHEAVES: The chipper sheave is 5VX18.7" with a 2 15/16" bushing. The engine sheave is
determined by the engine selection, as various engines have different operating speeds.
SHIELDS: There are three removable shields. One covers the sprockets and chain on the top
feed wheel, one covers the chain drive on the bottom feed wheel, and one covers the drive sheave
and belts.
FUEL TANK: Fuel tank is welded construction, 10 gauge steel with a vented, lockable cap. A ball
valve is installed in the fuel line to stop fuel flow if necessary. A float type level indicator is
provided. The fuel/hydraulic tank assembly mounts to the frame with (4) 1/2" bolts through 2 1/2"
diameter rubber isolators. Fuel capacity is 48 gallons.
BATTERY: 4-cylinder engines, 800 cca (cold crank amps). 6-cylinder engines, 1000 cca. Engines
250 hp and up, (2) 1000 cca. All electrical systems are 12 volt.
POPULAR OPTIONS
WINCH: For units so equipped, the winch is located on top of the infeed shroud. It is a Tulsa
Model H-931 , worm" gear driven and hydraulic powered. The winch is supplied with 100' of 5/16"
steel cable with a slip hook at the end. The gear drive is lubricated with 90-weight gear oil. The
cable drum has a spring tensioned guide plate to prevent cable unspooling and misalignment. It
is equipped with a separate hydraulic valve to operate the winch, and the cable drum is equipped
with a disengagement lever to allow free-spooling. There are (4) removable and replaceable
chrome fairlead rollers (equipped with grease fittings) to guide the cable. Pull-in force of the
winch varies depending on the amount of wraps of cable on the drum. With one wrap on the
drum, it is approximately 6100 Ibs., with five wraps, approximately 4000 Ibs. Speed is also
dependent on the amount of wraps, averaging approximately 50 fpm.
HYDRAULIC SWIVEL DISCHARGE: The hydraulic swivel discharge turns using a Char-Lynn
hydraulic motor, H-60 chain and sprockets. A separate hydraulic valve is located in the valve
bank on the side of the infeed to control its function. A removable shield allows access to the
chain and sprocket assembly.
HYDRAULIC STABILIZERS: A hydraulic front stabilizer comes as part of the Tandem or Dually
axle package. A control valve is located on top of the tongue to raise and lower the leg. Rear
stabilizers are available, also. These have separate control valves located in the main valve bank
on the side of the infeed. The stabilizer legs travel in a straight up-down motion and are powered
with Morbark manufactured 2520 welded cylinders. The tubing for the leg is 3/16" wall x 4" x 7"
rectangular tubing with a 12" x 12" footpad.
