Re: Report on Soil/ ~undation Analysis
Proposed Emeruency Services Buildinu
Wappinger, NY
Project 18-94
Gentlemen:
We are pleased to present our report on the soil/founuation
analysis made for the subject project to be located in Wappinger, NY.
This work was verbally authorized by you.
The plans and information provided us indicate that the proposed
building, which will be located just wc-'!st of the town hall, will be
a one-story structure \vith a ground floor grade at Elev. 143.0.
Our services have consisted of a review of the logs of borings
provide us; examination of the samples ilncl cores obtilin(~d in the
borings; a site visi~; and preparation of this report in which
we descri be the subsurface condi t ions enc:ountered and pr(~sent our
opinions and recommendations regarding the type and depth of
foundations, allowable soil pressure, ~rounu floor support ~nd site
preparation work required.
Site and SubsurfJc0 rondi tions
There is a ridge or outcropping of bedrock roughly parallel to,
Jnd about 20 ft from the northw(~st WJ 11 1 i ne of the proposc;u
building. The ground contours on the site plan indicate that this
ridge is within the [lev. 148 contour so that the top of the ridge is
somewhat higher. Ttl(~ gf'l)llnG surfJce slopes allilY from the ri(lq(~ to
Elev. 140 or 142 <110n0 the northwf:st Jnd southeast wall lines.. The
building site is wooded.
The borings disclose that the bedrock slopes off to depths of
13 to 16t ft below 0rade at Borings I ,3 and 4 and 4 ft below grade
at Boring 2 which is near the rock ridge. The bedrock is identified
as a sound limestone.

2.
The soil overbtlrden below the tnp~;()il is identifiec1 by us as
a stiff tan sandy clayey silt with a trace of gravel becoming a
very dense oravelly coarse to fine <;,lnd with a trace of clay
\'iith increasing cJ(~pth. This soil 1S;1 q1acial "till", that
heterogeneous material deposited over the bedrock surface by the
glacier.
Ground water wa~ observed at a d~pth of 5t to 9 ft below
grade immediately after completion of the borings.
Foundation Analysis and Recommendati()n~;
- ---
^ ground floor Urade of Elev 143.0 will require J
substantial amount of excavation of both rock and soil and a
sma 11 amount of fi 11 i ng at the extreme edges of the side \'ia 111 s.
The soil overburden beneath the topsoil and the brc1rnck are
both competent foundiltion material s and vii 11 provide sui ".able
support for spre(J(J foot i ngs ilnd ttH~ urouneJ fl oor slab. J nil smuch
as it is not practical to desiun wi t11 eli ffen~nt soi 1 pressures
for the rock and soil and the fact that the structural loads will
be relatively light, \'10. recommend usinq i1 moderate allowable soil
pressure (5,000 psf) for all footi nqs . Oi fferent i a 1 sett 1 em(?nt
as a result of placinu footings on soil and rock should be
negligible, based on this criterion.
Exterior foot~~gs should be placed 3} ft below final outside
grade for frost protection. Interior footinl)s can be placed at
convenient depths below the floor slab.
It will be necessary to excavate the bedrock by blasting. It
is seldom possible to blast rock to a level plane. Therefore the
irregular surfJce of ttJe rock at footiWJ locations should be
free of loose or unsui tab 1 e materi a 1 1)(' fore construct i n<] foot i ngs
on it or placing a l<?veling COlJrs(~ of l(~an concrete or crushed
stone on it. ff th(,fl~ is a significant ilmount of ovp.r\)lilstin~ of
rock below footing grade, it may prove practical to compact the
shattered rock in place with a vibratory compactor, depending
on the depth of overl)lasting and tllf~ size of the rock fragments.
Treatment of SUC/l a stJai::':er.'?cJ zon(~ shoill d be determi n(~d in the ,fi el d.
Because of the clayey and silty naturo of the soil overburden,
which renders it moisture s(~nsitive MId sllbject to c1istlJrb,lnCe ,it
is essential that the soil subgrild(~ for footings be maintained 1n
its ~ndisturbed state. if moisture is a problem, a base of
crushed stone over th(~ soi 1 shaul d ke~~p it stab 1 e.
BL -3
'.
3.
Where fi 11 is requ i red to ril i se the grilde to sub floor 1 eve 1 ,
foll owi ng stri ppi n~ of topsoi 1, it shoul d cons i st of ilpproved sand,
sand/gravel, processc:d a~gregate or ttw smill1 sized rock fragments
from the excilvated Jreil providAd such fragments are wall 0raded and
do not exceed 12i n . in size. Stich nl,l teri a 1 shou 1 cf l)(~ placed
in 12 in. li fts and compacted with a vibri1tory compactor to 95%
maximum dry densi ty as determined by ASTM 0 698.
We recommAnd that a 6 in. base of compilcted crushed stone be
placed between th(~ subfl oor 1 eve 1 and the subgrade.
Limitations
This report has been prepared in accordance with our
authori zed SC()p(~ () I" work anel wi th ~Jeni~rilll y accepted profess i ana 1
practice in the field of geotechnical engineering. If the design
or location of the building is changpd we should be advisetJ so
that we may deternline how it will affect our recommendations. Our
conclusions and recolnmendations are based on the data revealed by
this investigation. If additional or contradictory data are
revealed in the future we should be notified so that muciifications
to our recommendations can be made, if necessary.
We appreciate the opportunity of asisting you with this
