1971 ~C/ rI / V ~ <'Jrtt ""..-"":'" '\ . 'r,/ Historians Report for the Year 1971 Dorothy B Alsdorf, Historian With two cen:bennial anniversaries withinth Township your Historian has had a very busy year. While it is true that she had no official capacity on the 7I Committee after the Nomi - nating Committee had functioned she was never the less invol- ved in an advisory capacity from time to time. This was of COUise time consuming. Her great concern has been that of setting up the ground work for the Town of Wappinger Centennial celebration Since accepting the position of Town Hisyorian the Wappinger Centennial has been constantly in mind. In May of this year preliminary plans were laid for a meeting of representative citizens. It is of primary impo:btance that every area in r!i,he township be represented. To accomplish this I selected one person from each voting district and requested that person to attend a me.::ting in theTown Hall. Approximately twenty people attended the first meeting. The attendance at subsequent meetings has fluctuated as to numbers and individual attendance has v varried. In Nov. the group was invited to meet in Chelsea at the old school. The firemen served hot coffee and doughnuts following the meeting. Business accomplished was the e~ection of $ / " candidates selected by the Nominating Committee in Oct. ......., . This committee had met at the home of Helen Stair(Mrs. Philip) and came up with the following slate of officers: Chairman Mr. Ed. Hinzman, corresponding secretary Ann Collier ( Mrs. Lawrence), recor<<ing secretary Agnes De Pew,(Mrs. Geo.) treasurer Mr. James Mills. There having been no nominations from the floor tea above slate was accepted. Previosly the e:roup had decided that the incumbent supervisor and the in.e cumbent historian would serve as advisory co- chairmen. We have an exceltent committee ready to put on one of he bes1centennial celebrations that Dutchess . ~~i~;l~~to~J1 There is only one. . and that is has ever seen. that everyone MUST GET BEHIND THE COMMITTEE AND ASSIST!~ In May forfue second time your Town Historian was elected to the position of Pres. of the ~i~##.#I####. Dutchess Co. Historians Association. In Oct. she was named a member offue Dutdhess Co. Bicentennial Committee. The usual amount of inquiries from people outside the area were answered. College students seeking assistance on the subject of local history have been given the halp sought. Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops requested lectures on the ~bject of local history. this was done. ')< In the~ matter of historical preservation your historian acted in the capacity of advisor to tbe origina~o~ of the movement to preserve and restore the oldOak Grove School. Some time ago we received permission from ~.Ed. Petrovits to move the old watering trough on the Cre~k Road. Within the last month the Trustees of'~e Hughsonville Fire Company has granted us permission to place the trough on their grounds. Yoyr historian acted as director of activities involved mn I open:tng and showing the restored room in the Brewer- Mesier House on the occassion of "The Picnic in The Park". Exhibits were done under her direction. Served on the Hesearch 60mmi ttee for 'bhe Wappinger Historical ~ Society forI97I. Wrote several articles for'lhe Southern Dutchess News on the subject of local history. Presently your historian isdoing a column every other week for the same paper~In and Out of Dutchess" lI'he Feb. meeting of ihe Historians of New York State at New York City was a most stimulating and educating experience. At this time I should like to express my appreciation to the Town ~oard for having made .. it possible for me to attend that conference. I did not attend the Cooperstown Seminars in June- July of 71 because in my oppinion they were notpertinen+ to our needs here in Wappinger. Parhaps this coming year yhe program at Cooperstown will be more helpful to our needs. The major piece of equipment purchased byfuis dept. this year was a was ~ typewrit\er. Research in which I am now engaged is trying to determine which people and or events of me Revolutionary War period commonly ascribed to Fishkill actually belon~ to Town of Wappinger. This covers the major work accomplished this year, with the exception of work being done on the life and writings, inventions etc. of Clinton Clapp. Respectfully submitted, t5~r:3,~ Dorothy B.
