Town Board
Town of Wappinger
Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
Gentlemen:
The attached tables speak for themselves regarding
the increased activity in Justice Court in the year 1968.
In both numbers of cases and in financial transactions,
growth has been phenominal.
I do feel that your attention should be called to a
portion of Governor Rockefeller's annual message and the
potential affect a proposal made in it could have on our
Town.
In his message, the Governor proposed the disposition
of some traffic cases by the Department of Motor Vehicles
rather than the Courts. If this proposal were to become a
a reality, that could mean a significant drop in income to
Wappinger.
During 1969, Wappinger Town Court forwarded to the New
Ycrk State Comptroller $32,555.00 in fines for Vehicle and
Traffic Law violations and received back from the Comptroller
an estimated $18,800.00 for that service.
It is not my intent to imply that the fines earned by
courts are a measure of efficiency or ability. However, the
fact is that some income is generated by court activities.
Should the Governor's proposal be implemented, it could
-,

adversely affect the amount of the fees earned for the Town
by its court.
I have taken the liberty of calling this proposal to
your attention so that you may take any action you feel is
necessary.
Respectfully submit ed,
