More advertising of our programs. We should use different mediums to get our message out. We also should have a professional looking Recreation Guide that explains all of our programs. 2. Explore the possibilities for RollerbladingIRoller Hockey etc. 3. Bring together our Summer Camps for more interactive games. 4. Expand our Bus trips to accommodate more residents and hit a variety of activities. 5. Expansion of more Youth Programs (Golf, Volleyball, Baseball camp) The Proe:rams: Boys and Girls Basketball-Winter Age Range-7-12 year Olds Director (s): Adam Zolotas, Timothy Pauldine Location: Sheafe Road Elementary School Description: The program ran Saturday mornings from Early January to the End of March from lOam to 12pm. The program contained between 15--30 youngsters on the average. A $15.00 fee was charged for each participant. Recommendations for 2000: Although the directors were adequate for the program, attempts should be made to make the program more structure. Instead of games, more time should be spent on skills, rules, and objectives of basketball. We may want to think about focusing on a particular age group. Ages 7 to 12 may be too much of an age gap. Boys and Girls Gymnastics-Winter Age Range-7-12 year Olds Director (s)-Art GoldnerlBrenda PeuraIRobin Hassett. Location: Myers Comers Road Elementary School Description: Program ran from Early January to May of 1999 on Saturday Mornings from lOam to 12pm. Many experienced gymnastics instructors aided the directors. The very popular program found us turning away people in February (enrollment was over 100). Myers Comers Road Elementary School was very cooperative with our program. The custodian was always visible and even helped with the set up on numerous occasions. Recommendations for 2000: Nothing of significance should be changed to this program. We might want to consider running 2 sessions due to the demands of the program. Programs continued: Boys and Girls Basketball Program-Summer Age Range-7-12 years old Director (s)-James Cancelleri, Matt Scherer, Alan Fairey. Location: Sheafe Road Elementary School Description: The one week summer basketball camp was held at Fishkill Plains Elementary School from July 12 to 16 at Sheafe Road Elementary School. The program was nm by 3 directors with high school varsity basketball experience. Program hours were from lOam to 12pm. 45 children signed-up for the program which focused on drills, fundamentals, scrimmage games, and instructional techniques for playing basketball. Program cost was $15.00 Recommendations for 2000: The Wappingers Central School District did not give us the school we originally wanted (Wappingers Junior High School) If it was not for Mr. Miller, we might not have had a program at all. I would recommend having the program again at Sheafe Road Elementary School. This would ensure us the dates that we would want. Adult Volleyball Program Director-Walter Leczinski Location-Myers Comers Road Elementary School Description: The program completed in May of 1999 and restarted on October 5, 1999 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Myers Comers Road Elementary School gymnasium. Walter sets up 2 nets and rotates the 60 plus participants who signed up for the program. Program fee was $15.00 Recommendations for 2000-We have an outstanding director in Walter! He does a tremendous job with the amount of participants he gets each week. We should look into buying him new equipment (Volleyballs), and maybe running 2 different sessions to accommodate all of the people that want to play. Programs continued: Summer Adult Volleyball-Summer Director -Walter Leczinski Location-Sand Courts Pye Lane and Monfort Road Description: The popular activity ran from June until August on Tuesday evenings. Walter Leczinski directed the program, which received a good response. The program will continue in the Summer of 2000. Recommendations for 2000: Again, I would suggest we run a youth summer volleyball league targeted for teenagers. The request has also been mentioned that portable lights be placed on the courts for early evening games. Men's Basketball-F all/W inter Director-Jeff Shutter Location-Wappingers Junior High School Description: The program began in October of 1998, and concluded (not by our Choice) in January of 1999. We were kicked out ofWappingers Junior High School by the Wappingers Central School District (Skip Rottkamp's office) We were told that the building was going to be used for a school function on our program night (Wednesday's) Recommendations for 2000: Reality is that the program was not well attended. It was more difficult to keep away non-town residents. Due to scheduling difficulties with Wappingers Junior High School, the program was not reinstated in 1999. Some form of a 6-week program is being looked into for the Spring of 2000. Programs continued: Schlathaus Race-October 2, 1999 Director-Linda Stowe, Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club Location-Starting point/Registration is at Schlathaus Park Description: This was the 20th annual Race sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club. The race was in 2 parts: 5K run for adults, and a I-mile "Pumpkin run" for the children. This year, 52 adults attended the race. Winners in the adult race received either a trophy or a medal, which was purchased by us from Diane Majcher who has been doing the awards for several years. Each child that raced received a pumpkin courtesy of Meadowbrook Fanns. The race director, Linda Stowe, interfaced with the Town to coordinate the event. Recommendations for 2000: The race is a key for local runners. This is a tune up for the later fall races. I feel we should continue to support the Mid-Hudson Road Runners Club. However, Diane Majcher was unreliable with the trophies. I placed the order on August 12, 1999, and the trophies were delivered at 10:30am the day of the race. I recommend we look into another trophy dealer for 2000. Summer Concert Series Director -S teve Lowery Location-Schlathaus Park Dates-June 24-August 12 Description: The summer concert series began on June 24 at 7pm. Performing this past summer were: Final Touch, Switch in Time, Thunder Ridge, Sonny Carroll Orchestra, The Klassics, Steve MaxlNed Gelfars Comedy Show, Peter Spink, and Matt Jordan's Orchestra. Attendance was down this year due in part to the hot weather. Sonny Carroll was rained out during the 1 st ~ hour of his performance. Recommendations for 2000: Concerts will continue in 2000 with one less show. The first concert of 1999 was not very well attended due to graduations/end of school etc. The 2000 schedule will reflect this. Also, a new Friday night Family concert series is being developed for July 2000. Finally, West Point will return for 2 shows in 2000. Programs continued: Christmas Tree Lighting-December 5, 1999 Location-Schlathaus Park Description: This year's tree lighting was held in summer like conditions. We had close to 400 people attend the event, which was double from last year. The Hudson Valley Council Band provided entertainment. The New Hackensak Fire Company delivered Santa Claus in one of their fIfe trucks. Town supplied smiley ornaments and apples while the Wappingers Soccer Club and Little League supplied candy for the children. We had many volunteers who served donuts, cider, and hot chocolate to the people. Connie Smith lit the tree at 5 :45pm. Recommendations for 2000: I recommend we re-hire the Hudson Valley Council Band again. Aerobics-F all-Spring Director-DJ Reese Location: Wappingers Junior High School Description: Program continued until May of 1999 and re-started in October 5, 1999. Program was held every Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. $15.00 fee was charged for each participant. Recommendations for 2000: No recommendation, the program is very successful under Mrs. Reese. We could try to pay her more money to make it equal to what Aerobic instructors make in Gyms. Programs Continued: Halloween Party-October 24, 1999 Location: Schlathaus Park Description: Ith Annual Halloween party was held under cool conditions. We had a total of 125 children attend the party. Prizes were awarded in various categories and judged by Connie Smith, Elaine Snowden, and Slyvia Holt. Refreshments included: Cider, Donuts, and Candy supplied by the Town of Wappinger Soccer Club, and the Town of Wappinger Little League. Prizes were donated by: Wendy's, Hudson Valley Renegades, Video Update, Taco Bell, McDonalds, Fun Central, Party city, Subway, and Eddies Gourmet Pizza. We had a new entertainer perform for the children this year. Ellen Korz, and Joanne Vasquez did a wonderful job in coordinating the event. This year marked the absence of BeetleJuice the entertainer. Recommendations for 2000: I think we should keep the program as is. We should focus more on advertising the event to gain more people. Also, maybe we should limit the number of donuts people are allowed. We had one person take advantage of our generosity. Easter Egg Hunt-March 28, 1999 Location: ScWathaus Park Description: First ever Easter Egg Hunt was held. We bought plastic eggs, which contained candy. Some eggs contained numbers. If a child received an egg with a number, they received a larger prize. Children were broken down into age groups, and sent to a specific area with a chaperone. Approximately 75 children attended the event McDonalds generously donated orange drink which was served at the event. Recommendations for 2000: For our first time, the program was successful. For 2000, we should limit the number of eggs children are allowed to have. Some children walked away with a dozen eggs, while late comers did not receive any eggs at all. More advertising should be done to attract more children. Programs continued: Bus Trips-Seasonal Director-Steve Lowery Description: This year the Town of Wappinger Recreation expanded from 1998 in the area of Bus Trips. This year we attended the following: Saratoga Raceway, Shea Stadium for the Yankee-Met Game, Mohegan Sun Casino (3 Times), and Radio City Music Hall for the Christmas spectacular. Each trip was filled at 40 people with the exception of the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, which filled at 80. One trip to see Beauty and The Beast was canceled due to the theatre being closed. Trips were arranged through Aristocrat Tours. They offered us great packages at low prices. Recommendations for 2000: I feel we should add more trips. They are very well received. We should add trips to Broadway shows, events at West Point, amusement parks, and other unique events. I feel the Town of Wappinger Recreation department is on their way to even bigger and better things in the year 2000. This year I feel we should dedicated ourselves to the following: Town of Wappinger Recreation 2000: Leaders in recreation for the 21 8t century. Respectfully Submitted, Steve Lowery Town of Wappinger Recreation Director TOWN OF WAPPINGER SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM 1999 REPORT Kimberly Allen Summer Program Director 1999 Town ofWaDDin2er Recreation Staff Summer Program Director: Kimberly Allen Castle Point Director: Courtney McDonnell Counselors: Michael Brown, Carolyn Hemingway, Courtney Urciuoli, Chad Waxman Evans Director: Meridith Cullen Counselors: Jen Drexler, David Kedziewala, Steve D' Ambtozio, Darrell Flynn, Jill Smith, Dina Senerchia Martz Field Directors: Jami Clausson, Katie Cwiakala Counselors: M. The total number of children registered was 841. The average daily attendance was 347. Participants were charged for the camp program only. The charge was $30,00 for the first child, and $20.00 for each additional child in the family. Each child also received a free tee-shirt. Planned eventsffrips Each camp attended the following trips for the summer of 1999: . Four trips to Splashdown . Movies . Two Bowling trips . Trips to the Schlathous Park 370 Children attended the end of the year picnic at Schlathaus Park. Activities that were held at the individual camps are discussed in more detail in each camp's summary. Planned Eventsffrips Scheduling was great this year. Wappingers Central School's district was very reliable this year. The use of cellular phones solved any of the problems that came up. Due to this advantage of increased communication, they seemed to make more of an effort to correct their mistakes. The directors and counselors, as well as parents and the children were very happy with the trips this year. All six of the camps attended splash down each time it was scheduled this year. This was very beneficial in many ways. It allowed the summer and recreation directors to meet once a week all at the same time. At this time we discussed many different ideas and problems that may have been occurring. This also enabled the summer director to meet with the counselors to discuss any problems, or new procedures. Splashdown was still overbooked. Many directors and counselors complained about this and asked if we would decrease the number of times we attended splashdown. Bowling was enjoyed by most this year. There were many requests to go bowling once a week and splashdown only once or twice a month. I would highly recommend this change. This year, sign-up and money for trips was done in advance. Splashdown had to be paid for by Monday morning at 11 :00. This way, the recreation director could go to splashdown and get the bracelets. Each camp would then have the bracelets before they arrived at splashdown. This worked very well, and caused less confusion at splashdown. Most of the camps, such as Martz Field and Spookhill, benefited greatly from this new system. Much time was saved on the day of the trip and campers were able to enjoy their outing for longer amounts of time. Some parents were disappointed in this new system because they were used to paying on the day of the trip, and they could not pay by check. I think that this new system worked out very well, and once parents learn this system, they to will understand its benefits. A letter needs to be sent home with parents on the first day of camp, so every understands the procedure. Also place such as splashdown preferred being paid all at once by either myself or Steve Lowery. When the procedure was done correctly, there was minimal confusion. This topic needs to be addressed before camp starts next year so that everyone understands the new procedure. New to the program this year was weekly visits to Schlathaus Park. Every Tuesday all six camps would get together and watch all different types of performers. Steve Max was well liked by all and would highly recommend him again for next year. Ned the comedian was very well liked by the children and the counselors, and I recommend him to come back next year also. We also heard from Peter Sprink and his band. Although I enjoyed him, the children had a tough time sitting through all of his songs. Next year I would recommend that we keep going to the Schlathaus Park, but we need to make sure that the entertainers involve the children to keep their interest. New activities that camps would like to see implemented next year include: roller- skating, Ultra zone, Dairy Queen, and visiting other camps. Although some of these suggestions may not be within our means, others are worth considering. Games/Supplies/Equipment The directors' recommendation for additions to our inventory of games include more board games, checkers and cards. The camps this year had parachutes and Robinson Lane now has a basketball hoop. I also would recommend that we have more than one air pump, as a few camps always seemed to need it at the same time. This year we had an arts and craft director. This person designated specific times for each camp and traveled to the camps to direct different types of arts and crafts. Although confusing in the beginning, I thought that this was a great idea, and allowed the children to do big projects that had not been done recently. I would recommend that we keep this position next year. It's important for the summer program director to keep an assorted stock of cleaning supplies, and first-aid supplies in his/her car. This way repeated trips to the same camp in one day can be avoided. Safety The opportunity was provided for several staff members to become certified in CPR and First Aid, free of charge to them, in order to enable us to meet the requirements set by the board of health and to assure proper safety for coverage at each location. Sloper Willen was more than helpful in holding these classes for us in their building. Water Evans playground was supplied with bottled water, because there was not an available source of running water at this location. Evans was supplied with enough water for drinking and cleaning. The directors just need to make sure to let us know when the camp had used up more water than usual and needed more right away. Cleanliness The responsibility of cleaning all the bathrooms falls on the camp staff I recommended that each director make a chart and assign the staff to different days. I suggested that this list be posted. I also held the directors responsible for checking the bathrooms at the end of the day to make sure that were cleaned. It also is the responsibility of the staff mender who is assigned to them that day, to check periodically throughout the day to make sure that everything is okay. This new procedure was enforced at all camps and worked very well. I recommended that we keep it for next year. End of the Year Picnic As with every year the end of the year picnic had many great improvements. It requires a certain amount of time and preparation for the six camps to come together and enjoy the day. Shoprite was a huge help, as well as maintenance. The recreation staff and council members were terrific with the food preparation. This year, instead of the usual games, we had Sloper Willen bring an ambulance, and the fire department bring in a fire truck. Each of these groups preformed a presentation for the children. Although this was a good idea, the children were unable to stay focused and still for the second performer. I would recommend only one presentation next year, or have them park in the back and have the children go and talk to them on their own. I also would bring back some of the games. By the second presentation the children did not want to sit down anymore, they wanted to run around and play. We also had a DJ. this year which the children, staff, and parents loved. Sean Door got the children and staff up and dancing. He did various dances with his audience and handed out free CD's. I definitely recommended hiring Sean Door back next year. The Lip Sync contest was run on a very strict schedule this year with the help of Clare Rottkamp. Clare spoke with all of the directors and each camp was ready to perform their dances for Clare weeks before the picnic. Clare visited with each camp before the picnic and chose 3 groups from each camp to perform. The children had to copy their songs onto a blank tape and have it ready to go on the day of the picnic. This caused us to have less confusion than any other year, and it was a great success. I suggest that next year we have one or two people run the lip sync contest. It is important that these people are familiar with lip sync contests of the past. General Recommendations General staff attendance this year was good. I recommend that we do not hire people who need to take a week or more off. I also recommend that we continue to try and make attendance mandatory for the end of the year picnic. Although more in-depth training sessions were held for all staff members this year, the problem arises when many counselors are not available to attend these. Separate training sessions were held for all camp directors prior to camp opening, and I would recommend that this be repeated. I also would suggest that directors meet with their staff to discuss various things. I also think that the summer director should attend these meetings to go over specifics with that camp. These meeting need to have close to 100 percent attendance so that every staff member knows what to do. Attendance should always be taken by name, in addition to total number of children, twice daily. Each staff member was responsible for a specific group of campers whose attendance records he/she was responsible for keeping. In 1998, we tried to implement a plan that a counselor was to be on "attendance duty" throughout the day. For the most part this plan worked. Martz field carried out a new plan this year that worked very well. Three people were on sign up duty for one week, while the other counselor's supervised the children. Those three counselors were the only ones that could sit at the table to sign children in. Since there are so many people at this camp, this caused less confusion. These same three people also signed the children out at the end of the day, and also throughout the day. I recommend that Martz Field carries this plan out again next year. Martz Field also implemented a new procedure for field trips which worked out really well. They assigned two people to collect and handle field trip money for the whole year. These were the only two people who could collect the money. This saved a lot of confusion of who paid who and who did not. Also, the parents were aware of whom to give the money to. Once again, the use of cell phones provided to be very useful. Much time was saved, and communication was easy. I would recommend that next year we supply quarters to camps that use pay phones. I recommend that we continue to use the colored t-shirts to each registered camper and that it be mandatory that they wear it for each trip. Castle Point Staff: Courtney McDonnell Director Mike Brown Carloyn Hemingway Courtney Urciuoli Chad Waxman 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 Total Registration Average Daily Attendance 84 34 85 45 52 36 91 39 61 31 Special Events included Ice Cream Day, McDonald's Day, Scavenger Hunt, and a Candy Hunt. Recommendations: I would recommend that we give this camp quarters for the pay phone. We had some problems with the director delegating responsibility. Often times the counselors stayed together. This camp had the most parental complaints. I recommend that a person with more experience with camps be a director for Castle Point next year. The staff of 5 was more than adequate for covering the number of campers who were in attendance daily. I recommend that we maintain the same number of employees at this location. Evans Staff: Meredith Cullen Director Jen Drexler Steve D'Ambrosio David Kedzielawa Darrell Flynn Jill Smith Dina Senerchia 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 Total Registration Average Daily Attendance 129 59 127 58 130 87 58 46 103 43 Special Events: Basket Weaving, Watermelon Day, Olympics, Tie-Dye Day. Recommendations: There is currently no available source of running water at this location, so the regular delivery of bottled water should remain top priority for 2000. A cellular phone has also been provided and I recommend that we use that again. This staff seemed to have problems with leaving throughout the day for various reasons. The director did not seem to take the initiative to stop this. They were told that they were not allowed to leave the camp unless they were given permission from the summer or recreation director. I would recommend that this rule still applies for all the camps next year. The staff of 7 was quite adequate for covering the number of campers who were in daily attendance. I recommend that we maintain the same number of employees at this location. Staff: Catherine Cwiakala Jami Clausson M. Frank Bailey, Jr. Kelly Clausson Catherine Chappis Heather Crawford Diana DiMuro Christine Higgins Kim Holley Michael Jutt Jason Jutt Andrew Nicola Jill Marro Victoria Paul dine Clare Rottkamp Vanessa Stawaris Total Registration 235 Average Daily Attendance 107 Martz Field Director Director 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 231 93 201 75 184 82 203 72 Special Events included Tie-Dye Day, McDonalds Day, Pizza Day, Carnival Day, World Cup Soccer Day, and Face Painting Day. Recommendations: Martz Field needs to continue to be patrolled after hours. Although there were no incidents this year, in the past years campers have found drug paraphernalia which were left behind after camp hours. I would also recommend that staff walk around before campers get there and check the camp. There was a huge improvement at Martz Field this year. The new attendance and field trip procedures decreased confusion. Martz Field had no problem implementing these procedures. As a result of the growing number of children at this camp, I would suggest that we keep having two directors. Katie and Jami complimented each other really well. Having two directors helped reduce stress and make things easier for everyone. The staff of 16 was quite accurate for covering the number of campers who were in daily attendance. I recommend that we maintain the same number of employees at this location. Quiet Acres Staff: Lauren Smith Director Timothy Allen Rob Allen Erin Clausson Eric Kedzielawa Nicole Kokiasmenos Sarah W oogen 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 Total Registration: Average Daily Attendance: 141 57 135 61 118 S3 99 49 73 45 Special Events included Halloween in August, McDonald's Day, Candy Hunt, Peanut Hunt, Tye-Dye Day. Recommendations: I recommend that this location continue to be patrolled after hours since this is a rather remote area. Broken glass was found last year, as well as some graffiti. This camp received the most parental praise, and had the least amount of problems. Everyone worked really well together. The staff of 7 was more than adequate for covering the number of campers who were in daily attendance. I recommend that we maintain only seven employees at this location for 2000. Robinson Lane Staff: Christopher Miller Director Rob Morano Andrea Mazzeo Steven Lewis Jimmy Chappas Jessica Saz 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 Total Registration: Average Daily Attendance: 89 36 87 39 100 50 73 30 74 31 Special Events included Coloring contests, Talent Shows, Halloween, Fiesta Day, Happy Meal Day, and Dessert Day. Recommendations: Christopher Miller, the director, did a terrific job this year. He handled everyone on his own and did a great job. I recommend that he changes and becomes director at a busier, larger camp next year. The staff of six was more than adequate for covering the number of campers who were in attendance daily. Spook Hill Staff: Kristen Smith Director Nora Bitting Lisa Birchard Alan Fairey Kevin Horan Michael Paino Rachelle Polidore Erica Wolfe 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 Total Registration: Average Daily Attendance: 176 54 174 72 144 58 98 54 84 40 Recommendations: There were no vandalism problems this year, however the location still needs to be patrolled after hours. This camp had many problems with counselors playing cards, or mingling with each other. They were spoken to many times by the director but the problems were still occurring. Finally, Steve and I were forced to suspend one of the counselors for a week, and warn a different counselor that he needed to start interacting with the children. I recommend that the director for next year be notified of the types of problems that arose at Spook Hill next year so that this problem can be dealt with quickly and efficiently if it should arise again. The staff of eight was quite adequate for covering the number of campers who were in daily attendance. I recommend that we maintain seven or eight employees at this location for 2000. Learn to Swim Program: Age Range 6-13 Director-Heather Williams Staff-Greg Miller, Michelle McLeod, Kristen Pedicone (Lifeguards) Dawn Haas, Lisa Ciesluk, Michael Gallucci (Playground Aides) Location-Deer Hill Conference Center Description: We again ran our Learn to Swim program with funding from the Youth Bureau. The program ran from June 28 to August 12 at the Deer Hill Conference Center. Transportation was provided by the Wappingers Central School District. Program hours were from 10:30am to 2:30pm. This year, we ran a separate program from the day camps with 6 sessions. Attendance for each session was as follows: Session 1-50, Session 2-74, Session 3-66, Session 4-64, Session 5-62, Session 6-44. Due to renovations at Wappingers Junior High School, parents had to drop off and pick up their child at Roy C. Ketcham High School's parking lot. Recommendations for 2000: Separating from the camps was a good idea. Problems with scheduling were minimal. Roy C. Ketcham actually worked better than Wappingers Junior High School. I would recommend we hire 1-2 Additional lifeguards, and 1 additional playground aide to be more effective with the high number of children that attended some of the sessIOns.
