TYPE OF APPEAL - a.-
a.1) For a transmitting antenna to function well for long
distance communications, it must be at least 1 wave-
length above ground.
For the 14-megacycle amateur band, 1 wavelength is
approximately 60 ft. above the ground.
An ideal antenna instalation for an amateur radio oper-
ator would consist of antennas mounted 65 ft., 98-ft.,
and 110-ft. above the ground. This would enable the radio
operator to take maximum advantage of v.arying propagation.
Since I cannot afford such a set-up, I have to settle for
much less than an ideal antenna system.
a.2) The amateur radio is not wide spread. Approximately
400.000 licensed in the U.S.A. Don't confuse us with
~
"C.B." operators. Amateurs provide many usefull functions.
See enclosed letter from the Department of the Navy. In times
of disaster, amateur radio is often the only means of
Communication available. Many amateurs pride themselves in
being ready to operate their stations under the worst
of conditions. For example, my station is capable of
operating for approximately one week on an emergency
power supply of 12-volt batteries kept fully charged
for this purpose. I also keep a supply of wire needed to
erect emergency antennas.
There is also a Military Affiliated Radio System (Amateurs
licensed by the military) as a ready source of trained
radio operators to suppliment the military in time of
local or national emergency or in time of war. I am active
in this program, licensed by the U.S. Navy as NNN0HND.
a.3) My neighbor to the north of me has a mobile home on his
property in addition to his house. My neighbors to the
west include another mobile home and a restaurant. (The
Osborne Inn). The telephone polffiin the area are at about
the same height as my proposed antenna system. I do not live
in a development area, and the houses are not very close
together.

DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY
U. S. NAVAL FACILITY
FPO SAN FRANCISCO 96614
.....
From: Corrnnanding Officer
To: Amateur Radio Operator, Alfred F. Kutka, Jr., 282 (WA2NSH)
Subj: Letter of Appreciation
The Officers, men and women of the United States Navy stationed on
Midway Island wish to take this opportunity to express their appreciation
to you for the help you have given both in your time and expertise in
completing phone patch traffic to their family members in the Continental
United States.
You have bridged the span of space separating members of the United
States Navy serving an unaccompanied tour on Midway Island and have made
their separation from family and loved ones a little more bearable.
Every member leaving the ham shack on Midway Island leaves with fond
memories and smiles.
The foundation of Amateur Radio is built on unselfish service to
others while providing a ready communications reserve of qualified radio
operators in time of local, national and international disaster. Re-
questing nothing in return except the self satisfaction received from
your hobby, you and many other amateur radio operators across the United
Sta tes can be justly proud of the contribution you have made toward the
overall morale of this island.
