UntitledSpellin,q'Grernlins' ,Active
On Dutchess Signs Alain
.By NATHAN DYKEMAN
Those little gremlins have
been active again in Dutchess
County, particularly in the
Wappingers Falls area.
Motorists driving north on
new Rt. 9 may have noticed
the large beautiful green sign
which spells out "Village of
Wappinger Falls." The gremlins
succeeded in removing the "s"
from Wappinger without the
wariest sign watcher being
aware of it. Usury _tkta
fellows put an etµ
Town of Wappinger. (Once the
Town Hall had a large sign
proclaiming "Town of Wap-
pingers" on its exterior).
Near the "Wappinger Falls"
sign is one for "Myers Corners;
Road." The gremlins were
really foxy with this one. All
the signs along this road are
spelled this way until the very
end, at Rt. 376 when the sign
reads; "Meyers Corners Road."
One Wappinger native says she
believes the latter sign is correct
although "Myers" is much more
common. The gremlins will let
you take your choice.
Forge Book Meadows resi-
dents in Fishkill also have a
choice when it comes to Kip
Drive, spelled with two "ps".
at the Old Glenham Road in-
tersection and with one "p" at
the opposite end, where it meets
Van Steuben Drive. At the Kip
House on Old Glenham Road,
they will tell you that one "p"
is correct since it is named
for Hendrick Kip, an early
owner of_ the old house.
Nearer to Beacon, t h e
gremlins also have given you
two variations of Tompkins
Avenue, the one at Business Rt.
52 spelling it ,Thompkins." The
Beacon directory lists it as
"Tompkins."
Gremlins being busy little
people, it is hopeful they will
p a in t out the "h" in
"Thompkins" some dark night
and the extra "p" in Kip, and
maybe add an "s" to t14
beautiful Wappinger Falls sign.
'iut how could they insert an
" in the other inconsistent
This could be a problem,
:or a gremlin.
GREMLINS WERE HERE — Two spellings
of Kip Drive are obviously the work of the
little fellows, but these signs are of Ion-
standing. Their jokes often seem to be
quite permaueut.
