Honorable Elaine Snowden
Town Clerk, Town of Wappinger

RE: 2000 population Total
Dear Ms. Snowden:
Pursuant to Town Law, Section 11, the Secretary of State is required to file an authenticated statement of the population
of each town whose population is 5,000 or more as shown by the decennial Federal census. Enclosed you will find a copy
of the portion of such statement which shows the 2000 population for your town.
You are reminded that, if the population of your town has reached 10,000 or more and if the town is not already a town
of the first class, it must become a town of the first class effective January 1, 2002. In such event, the town must hold
elections for officers of a first-class town at this year's 2001 biennial town election. Certain other requirements are
contained in Town Law, Section 11; for further guidance you are advised to consult your town attorney.
Towns of the second class whose population is 5,000 or more but less than 10,000 may optionally change their
classification to that of first-class town, by following the procedures of Town Law, Section 12. If your town is in this
category you are also advised to consult your town attorney for further guidance.
If you have any questions, please contact Harry Willis, Associate Attorney, at (518) 474-6740.
Sincerely,
~~~/
