RE: INCREASE OF SUMMER PROGRAM FEES
The intention in setting fees for participation in many of our recreational activities
is to recover some of the cost of providing that activity.
Our summer program carries a significant expense tab. Our present policy of
charging $15.00 for the first family member and $10.00 for each additional member recovers
approximately 1/5 of the cost. We recognize at this time that to recover the total cost of the
program is neither feasible nor an action we would recommend. We do feel, however, that an
increase to $30.00 for the first family member and $20.00 for each additional family member is a
needed change.
This year for safety concerns, especially while on field trips etc, we are purchasing
simple colored T-shirts with the Town logo on it for each participant. These shirts are a must
when the child attends any off site program to help identify our participants. This increase in fee
will help to subsidize the cost of the shirts.
Our contact with the parents when registering their children is one of surprise. We
supervise the activity of their children 25 hours a week for seven weeks. Many parents register
their children only as an "in case" and never use the facilities. They have no problem spending
$15.00 for an "in case" situation. But, on the other hand they keep other children from being able
to attend especially in the beginning of the program. We believe they all feel they are receiving a
bargain and this feeling would not change with the increase we are proposing.
