Dear DECALS Agent:
In a continuing effort to make the DEC Automated Licensing System (DECALS) Point-of
-Sales (PaS) system more user friendly and efficient we will be changing the way you connect to
the system. Many DECALS Agents have previously requested that this change be made, and we
are now ready to move forward.
We will be moving entirely to an Internet based system. DECALS computers will no
longer connect to the DECALS database over a dedicated telephone line as it does today. This
changeover is scheduled for January-February 2008.
After the conversion, you will not be able to access DECALS through the current method
using your dedicated phone line. You will access the system through the web browser on your
computer and therefore you must have your own Internet Service Provider. .
Your Internet Service Provider may be broadband (e.g., Roadrunner), DSL (e.g.,
Veri~on), or dial-up (e.g., AOL). To continue selling licenses, you will need to obtain some type
of Internet Service Provider and ensure it is available prior to the end of February 2008.
There are a number of benefits you will see because of this changeover:
. With the exception of printer drivers, no other DECALS related files will need to be
installed on your computer for the pas to operate. Therefore there will be:
-No more POS downloads.
-No more corrupted catalogs or local files that require sales agents to wait for a
replacement PC.
_ The ability to use your own PC instead of the Department furnished PCs.
. Improved speed for the sales transaction when you use a high-speed Internet connection
(e.g. Roadrunner or DSL), and the ability to stay connected for long periods oftime.
. Elimination of the dedicated phone line just for the POS System. Y oucan use existing
Internet connections to provide access to DECALS.
To further simplify using DECALS, this new system will also allow you to use your own
office computer and eliminate the extra DECALS-dedicated system. If for some reason this .
option does not work for you, however, you will be able to use a DEe computer, but you will
still be required to provide your own Internet access.
To successfully complete the conversion of all the agents to the new Internet based
system by February 2008, please complete the attached form and return it in the addressed,
postage paid envelope to the Department of Environmental Conservation by December 14,2007.
Once you return the attachment, you will receive a detailed follow-up correspondence
outlining your specific change process step-by-step.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
~~~~
