UPDATE ON LIBRARY ACTIVITY

We would like to take this opportunity to update you on what has been
happening at Grinnell since the beginning of the year. It is our intention to make this
short report to you on a quarterly basis to keep you informed of the many ways
Grinnell serves the residents of our community. If you have any questions or
comments after reading these reports, please feel free to contact any of our Board
members or our director.
. Six weekly story hour sessions for 2-5 year olds, serving 60-75 families
. Weekly Babies in Bookland program for infants up to 23 months, serving 15
families
. Visits by three Wappinger elementary classes, approximately 150 children
. Use of our 9 public computers
--800 people using Internet, online databases, grant searching
. --75 people using word processing
. Two weekly GED classes for people getting high school diplomas, 30 people
per week
. Three weekly English as Second Language classes, 45 people per week
. Weekly income tax assistance for over 100 seniors and low-income families,
and the only local provider of Federal and NYS tax forms
. Use of the Community Room by Brownies, Cub Scouts, FIT Investment Club,
Alzheimer support group, Hudson Valley Writers Club, home schooling
families
. ,Use of the library for one-on-one tutoring oflocal students, approximately 15
per week

· Construction on handicap lift/refitting bathroom began Feb. 7, expected
completion by 4/1
(With Community Development Block grants from the Town and Village)
. Registration of approximately 400 new patrons
. Circulated approximately 22,000 library materials, including books, audio &
video cassettes, CDS, magazines, multi-media kits, binoculars
. Answered approximately 2,500 reference questions
. Borrowed or loaned 665 items through the interlibrary loan system
· Published and mailed out our first Grinnell Gazette library newsletter
Grinnell is truly an educational, cultural, recreational and social asset to our

q UILTERS WANTED I The library would like to raffle a quilt as a fund
raiser. We are looking for quilters interested in creating and donating a
quilt to raffle. Please contact library staff if you can help with this project.
GRINNELL CELEBRATES NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK I APRIL 9-15
The library is celebrating National Library Week with a performance of the play
"Greensnake" written by Wappingers Falls native Carrie Dubois and performed
by the rat/x-Real Theatre Company of New York. The play will be held Saturday.
April 15 at 2 p.m.
911 UPDATE I Did your address change as a result of the switch to 911? Ifit
has changed, please call the library and let us update your records.
BIRTHDAY BOOK CLUB I Would you like to celebrate a child's birthday with
a special gift? Grinnell Library now has a Birthday Book Club. You choose a
book from our beautiful selection of new books to donate to the library in honor
of a child's birthday. When you choose a book the library will place a bookplate
inside it with the child's name. Your child can be the first to borrow this
commemorative book.
YOU GOTTA HAVE FRIENDS I Belonging to the Friends of Grinnell is a
wonderful way to use your resources to support the library. The group is involved
with planning and running their own events. Additionally the Friends may
participate in library function~ which the group decides on an event-by-event
basis. For more information about joining the Friends of Grinnell, please call the
library, or e-mail usatgrinnelUibrary@hotmail.com.
WEB WANDERINGS I The Library has a presence on the Web. You can reach
us at http://memberpage.women.com/academics/grinnell. There are plenty of
reasons to point your browser in our direction. Did you know that YOll can check
your own personal library card record online? Or that YOll can use the Mid-
Hudson Library System computer catalog? We have a direct link to save YOll time
and effort. Our site is always changing to serve you better. Drop by often and
watch liS grow.
LIBRARY FUND DRIVE I The library's annual patron fllnd drive kicked off
in October. The goal for this year is $25,000. To date nearly $12,000 has been
raised with approximately $1500 due in matching funds from IBM. The funds
from this annual drive support the materials and services of your library. Thank

RENOVATIONS 1 Grinnell Library is
renovating to make the building more
accessible to all patrons. An elevator is being
installed and the second floor bathroom will
be wheelchair accessible. This project is
possible through Community Development
Block grants from Town of Wappinger and
the Village ofWappingers Falls, and a grant
from the New York State library construction
fund. Renovations should be complete by
the end of April.

SUMMER PROGRAMS I Summer reading
programs are in the planning stages. We will
again have preschool and school-age reading
programs. The theme this summer is Discover

2000. Story times will also continue through
the summer. Reading Buddies program will
also be offered this summer. In this program
an older reader (completed grades 6 and up)
is paired with a younger reader (completed
kindergarten through grade 3), June
registration.
COMPUTER CLASSES I The library will
be offering ongoing classes in Basic Computer
Skills and Basic Internet Skills. Registration
is required. Please call or stop by to register.
YOUNG ADULTS I We are creating a new
Young Adult section on the second floor of
the library. Check ou[ the new fiction and
nonfiction books just for you. Some of the
