BURNING PERMITS/OUTDOOR FIRES
Due to the many request this.office has received in the pas
weeks regarding burning permits for outdoor open burning, the Fire PrE
tion Bureau of the Town of Wappinger offers the following:
Residential onsite burning in the Town of Wappinger is proh~
bited. New York state Environmental conservation Rules and Regulatior
Part 215 prohibits all residential onsite burning in all Towns with a
population great2~ than 20,000.
The prohibition on open burning of residential refuse, incl
leaves and brush, in TownshiPS with a population greater than 20,000
promulgated to preclude the generation of air contaminants from open
burning, in relatively densely populated areas.
section 1101.2C1 of the New York state Uniform Fire prevent
and Building Code states that outdccr fires, including bonfires and
rubbish fires, shall not be permitted unless legally authorized and i
conformity with forest fire control re~ulations.
Burning permits are only issued in the Town of wappinger fc

once a burning permit for site clearing is issued in addition to
any requirements stated by the forest ranger, the New York Fire
prevention and Building Code state that outdoor fires where permitted,
shall be attended at all times, with appropriated fire extinguishing
equipments readilY available.
This may consist of a garden hose, shovels, rakes, portable
fire extinguishers or a back hoe, bulldozer, etc.
The fire department may be contacted, for any fire district in
the Town, by calling the Dutchess county Bureau of Fire at (914) 471-142
and the code Enforcement official, Mark Liebermann, Town of Wappinger
Fire Inspector. (InSpector may be notified Monday - Friday between 8:30
a.m. _ 4:00 p.m. at the Town Hall at (914)297-1373.
Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could lee
to a summons being issued by the New York state Forest Ranger and the
Town of wappinger Fire Inspector.
