RE: Water and Sewer Service on Route 9
W20802.00
Dear Mr. Marlowe:
As you know, I am Engineer to the Town of Wappinger. The Town Supervisor,
Christopher J. Colsey, has received numerous requests for. water and sewer service from the
various property owners along Route 9. In consequence of those requests, Supervisor Colsey
requested a meeting with Route 9 property owners wt:lich was held at Town Hall on September
16,2010.
As I am sure you are aware, many of the properties on Route 9 have been issued
warnings from the DC Health Department because of high chloride content; apparently this is in
consequence of decades of use of road salt during snow.and ice weather events.
The meeting was attended by 13 property owners along both sides of Route 9 and south
to the Fishkill town line. I enclose a sign-in sheet from the meeting.
During the meeting, several of the property owners confirmed that they were
experiencing water quality issues relating to the chloride contamination. In addition, it is my
understanding that the Arby's restaurant recently installed, at great expense, a reverse osmosis
system for water quality treatment.
All of the property owners in attendance were interested in pursuing municipal water,
and all but one of the property owners were also interested in municipal sewer.
During the meeting, the cost of construction of water and sewer facilities, as well as the
associated operation and maintenance costs, were discussed. The property owners were
advised that any expansion of water and sewer service would be subject to formal vote by the
Town Board, and that all costs, including engineering, legal, bonding, district expansion, buy-in
fees and cost of connection would be charged back to the various properties.
Please provide me with any information the Health Department has with respect to
contamination (chloride) issues along Route 9 in the Town and the potential for and
requirements that would be necessary for municipal water sup I and sewer expansion in the
area.
