SAFE DRINKING WATER FOR ALLII
A PETITION FOR TOWN WATER
REQUESTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF

BROOK HOLLOW COURT
& MACFARLANE ROAD
Supervisor Office
NOV 2 9 2010
Received
Dear Supervisor Christopher Colsey and Town of Wappingers
Board;
We, constituents, homeowners, residents and taxpayers of the
Town Of Wappingers are asking for your consideration and
support in our quest for Town Water to be provided to us.
The priority of clean drinking water is of the utmost importance.
As the Town Supervisor and Board Members, you are well aware
that the new construction and expansion projects of both
, Adams FairAcre Farms and Friendly Motorcar, Inc have,
personally affected most of us in this neighborhood. As
homeowners who have properties abutting these construction
sites, well contamination is a major concern to us.
In the case of Friendly Motorcars, Inc. There are photographs
that document cars, which are in for service, parked within 100
feet of our wells! How do we know these cars are not leaking
any fuel, oil or, transmission fluid seeping into the ground and in
turn our wells?
Adams FairAcre Farms will be using and handling fertilizer for
the plants they will be growing and selling. One pi-n-sized hole
in a bag of fertilizer left on the ground can cause MAJOR
damage because of nitrates, which will infiltrate well water.
A variety of chemicals, including nitrate, can pass through the
soil and potentially contaminate ground water. Nitrate comes
from nitrogen, a plant nutrient supplied by inorganic fertilizer
and animal manure. Additionally, airborne nitrogen compounds
given off by industry and automobiles are deposited on the land
in precipitation and dry particles. Other nonagricultural sources
of nitrate include lawn fertilizers, septic systems, and domestic
animals in residential areas.
Beneath agricultural lands, nitrate is the primary form of
nitrogen. It is soluble in water and can easily pass through soil
to the ground-water table. Nitrate can persist in ground water for
decades and accumulate to high levels as more nitrogen is
applied to the land surface every year.
Ingestion in drinking water by infants can cause low oxygen
levels in the blood, a potentially fatal condition (Spalding and
Exner, 1993). For this reason, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EP A) has established a drinking-water standard of 10
milligrams per liter (mg/L) nitrate as nitrogen (U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, 1995). Nitrate concentrations
in natural ground waters are usually less than 2 mglL (Mueller
and others, 1995).
All of this is cause for concern that ground seepage will be
dangerous to our families! Will the Town hire someone to daily
monitor the use of these contaminants or test our wells on a
regular basis since they are responsible for allowing these
businesses to be in an area that will affect drinking water and
quality of life for its residents? In these economic times, not
likely.
In the long run, it would be more cost efficient and safer for our
Town to have water pipes bring in clean, filtered water to its
residents.
We have recently learned that during the construction, both of
these companies are obtaining water from the Town and
bringing it across to our side of Route 9. These pipes are large
enough to provide water to all of us who have signed this
petition, and would be able to hook up to the existing sites
further along the street at the Pavilion and White Gate
Condominiums, whom already use Town Water.
While well contamination is a concern, there is also the fact that
we have been paying for Phase III B water Plan in our taxes for
quite a few years with no end result.
Now is the time to actf We are asking that you execute a plan
immediately so as not to prolong the exposure of these and
other contaminants that could be infiltrating our wells.
For us and for our children, we thank you for your consideration
in this matter of great importance.
