TOWN OF WAPPINGER RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF JANUARY 30, 1975 MEETING
Next meeting - February 13, 1975
The regular meeting of the Town of ~Jappinger Recreation Commission was held
at the Town Hall on January 30, 1975. The meeting was opened at 7:35 P.M.
Present: Hugh J. Maurer, George Schlathaus, Joseph Ennesser, Richard Garren,
Jean Beahan and Laura Zick
Absent: Mrs. Alfred Arkell
POP lrJARNER
Mr. Gerry Park from Pop ~arner attended the meeting and presented the
Commission with an itemized list of the protective equipment Pop Warner
would be needing. Mr. Park also requested that whatever the difference was
between the Commission's allocation for Pop Warner and the cost of the
protective equipment, be used for cheerleading equipment. Mr. Maurer said
the Commission did not know exactly how much money would be alloted for
Pop Warner, as the budget had to be revised. The Commission agreed that
whatever funds remained could be used for the cheerleading equipment. Mr.
Park thanked the Commission and said he would keep in touch.
JAYCEES
Mr. James Eberhardt had sent a letter to the Commission requesting the use
of a field in the Robinson Lane recreation area for a Centennial picnic
from July 1 through July 6. He attended the meeting to see how the Commission
felt about this and also to answer any questions they might have. Mr.
Eberhardt explained that the Jaycees needed an area large enough to hold
amusement rides and a circus. Mr. Ennesser said that the first field on the
left would be available, but Mr. Eberhardt felt that that field was not big
enough and that the field he was interested in was the back field. The
Commission explained to Mr. Eberhardt that the back field was very wet and
unsuitable for amusement rides. The Commission suggested that the area of
land next to the Imperial Plaza in Wappingers would be an ideal place. Mr.
Eberhardt said he would look into it. The Commission said they would
continue looking for an area which could be used. Mr. Ennesser suggested
that if nothing else could be found, then the Jaycees could reduce the size
of the circus and rides and use the first field on the left at Robinson
Lane. Mr. Eberhardt felt that that was a good idea.
Mr. Eberhardt also reported that the Special Interest Program was a big
success, the number of children attending was increasing each week. He
thanked the COI:Jfijission for the use of their custodian, ~vhich enabled the
Jaycees to use the Nyers Corners Cafeteria for the program. Mr. Garren
ask2d if the Jaycees needed anything else for the program. Mr. Eberhardt
said that they had just about everything, The only thing they had not been
able to find was wooden blocks. Mr. Schlathaus said he would be happy to
make some blocks for the children. ~r. Eberhardt said they would be grate-
ful fOI' o:my blocks he cCJu2.d !:IClke. Hr. Ebf.3rn-:1rdt also suid that the Jaycees

A letter from Dutchess County Youth Board to Mr. Louis Diehl was brought to
the attention of the Commission. The letter stated that the Youth Board was
compiling information pertai~ing to the ~ypes of recreation and youth
service programs within Dutchess County. The secretary was requested to
send a letter to the Youth Board requesting a copy of their findings.
A letter to Mr. John Bunting fro~ Hr. Lc~is Diehl concerning the Town
Centennial Commission was also b~ought t~ the attention of the Commission.
Mr. Maurer said that the Recreation Co~~'ission would probably have to be
very involved with the Centennial Com~issioG. Mr. Maurer pointed out that
if plans were not completed soon then g~3nts from the state would be lost.
Mr. Schlathaus motioned that the Recreation Commission do all it can to
help the Centennial Commissio~. It was seconded by Mr. Ennesser and carried.
Mr. Maurer suggested that the Ce~tennial Commission could come to the
Recreation Commission meetings at about ~:3J P.I.:Nr. Maurer said the
Recreation Commission should get a brea~~G,vn of what is wanted for the
Centennial and how much money is availacle from Mr. Louis Diehl.
A copy of a letter to Central Hudson Gas & Electric Company from Mr. John
J. Murphy of t~le Fishkill Area Jaycees ~~s received. It concerned the
chipping of the christmas trees collect2~ by the Jaycees. Mr. Maurer said
he had asked for a copy of this letter ~e=ause of the problem that had
existed at Fleetwood Drive because the cnristmas trees had not been chipped
yet. Nr. Maurer had received co~~laints from the Fleetwood residents that
people were starting to use the area as a dump. ~r. Maurer said the Town
had removed the things that ware dumped ~here by people and in the meantime
some teenagers had apparently ju::-ed most of the trees. Mr. Murphy has
told kr. Maurer that Central ~ud5Dn has a;r9sd to let them use the tree
chipper and so~e men have vo~u~tearsd to D~erate it and chip what trees are
remaining.
The secretary was requaste~ ~c send 3 le~te= to Mr. Harris6n stating that

the regular tennis nets in the winter, possibly something' such as chicken
wire or plastic strips could be substituted. The secretary was requested
to send a letter to Mr. Sailor thanking him for his interest and stating
that the Commission felt that the use of chicken wire would be hazardous
and that they were considering the problem.
~JI r~TEH PROGRAM
Mrs. Laura Zick reported that the Winter Program was going good but there
had been a problem VJith the Adult program last Monday night because the
school had scheduled a Girls basketball game to start at the same time.
t/irs. Zick said that she had called Mr. Brooks and asked him to send her a
schedule of the games so that Recreation would know which nights to hold
the Adult program at 8:00 P.M. instead of 7:00 P.M. Mr. Ennesser said he
had had a similar problem at John Jay High School with the Mens basketball
program, but it had already been settled. t1rs. Zick reported that only a
few girls were attending the Girls basketball program. Mrs.Zick said she
had called the CYO to tell them about the program and hopefully there
would be more girls there next week. If not the program would probably
have to be dropped. Mr. Ennesser reported that he had received an end of
season report from Mr. Skip Ransom.
S EN lOR C I T I Z E r~ S
Mrs. Jean Beahan reported that she had talked to Mrs. Hicks, the director
of the Senior Citizens club at the Zion church. Mrs. Hicks told Mrs.
Beahan that they were planning a trip to Radio City in New York and any
help from the Recreation Commission would be appreciated. About 41 citizens
were going on the trip. Mrs. Beahan suggested that the Commission pay
for the bus. Mr. Maurer felt the Commission should do something that would
help more than just 41 Senior citizens. Mr. G~rren felt the Commission
should pay for the bus to at least show the senior citizens that they
were really interested in helping out. Mr. Schlathaus suggested Mrs. Haahen
contact the two other clubs and find out how many senior citizens would be
interested in a trip. Mr. Maurer said the trip should be to a place closer
than Radio City as the expense of sending 4 or 5 buses to New York would
be too great. ~1rs. Beahan agreed to contact the other clubs.
ROLLER SKATING
Mrs. Jean Beahan said she had looked into the prices of two skating rinks,
the Avalon in Newburgh arid Wooden Wheels in Port Ewen. The Avalon was only
available on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, which are
all school nights. Wooden Wheels was available Monday and Tuesday evenings
and also on Saturday ~ornings. Everyone agreed d Saturday morni~g would be
the oost time for a trip. f'1rs. Beahan said a minimum of 75 people ~....ould be
needed and the hours would be 9 A.M. to 12 P.M. Mrs. Beahan also said that
