TOWN OF WAPPINGER RECREATION COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING TO REVIEW
TEf'mIS PRoGRAfvl
APRIL 30, 1975
Present: Hugh J. Maurer, Joseph Ennesser and Laura Zick
r"'ir. Barry Smith presented those pres en t with a list of ItJh at the
T8nnis Clinics and Program would contain. First on the list for the
Program was a Family Tournament. Mr. Smith said that it would probably
be the last week in June. The second item was exchange activities with
East Fishkill. Mr. Smith said that last year he and Mr. Sircusa had had
tournaments between Wappingers and East Fishkill and Mr. Smith hoped to
continue that this year. He said it would be a one day affair with the
8 to 11 year olds competing in the morning with matches in the afternoon.
Third was a Ladder Tournament. Mr. Smith explained that the names and
phone numbers would be put on a board in rank and anyone wishing to move
up in rank must compete with the person above them. Fourth was a list of
some of the activities planned for Juniors. Mr. Smith said he had only
listed a few items but he has planned on several additional things to
expand the junior activities. Mr. Smith said he felt it would be a good
idea to expand the junior activities and work more with the juniors.
The Fifth item was a tennis team. Mr. Smith said that if there is interest
a team could form and compete with other Tennis Clubs or Towns. Mr. Smith
said he knew that New Paltz would definitely be interested. Six and Seven
were additional clinics for Adults and Juniors. Mr. Smith said he would
probably arrange it so that the first 30 to sign up would be the ones to
attend. Eigth on the list was private instruction. Mr. Smith asked if he
could advertise in the paper that he would be giving private instructions.
~r. Ennesser said it should only be by word of mouth and signs. Everyone
agreed. Mr. Maurer stressed the fact that only one court could be used for
private instruction. Apparently last year more than one court was used
and many complaints had been received. Mr. Smith said he understood and
he would only use one court and no one other that himself could use the
court to give a private lesson. Mr. Smith then asked what date should
the supervision start. Mr. Ennesser said to start June 24, 1975, the first
Tuesday after the close of school.
Mr. Smith said he thought Mr. Chuck Deppe would be a good choice for
the Junior High Clines. He said Mr. Deppe is a teacher at the Junior High
and his tennis play is very good, but his experience as far as teaching
tennis is slimmer. Mr. Smith said he ~uld help Mr. Deppe. Mr. Ennesser
and Mr. Maurer agreed he could be hired to teach the clinics. Mr. Smith
said the clini~s would be held on Friday evenings from 6 to 8:30 P.N. and
on 52turday mornings from 9 to 11:30 A.M., with the first hour for juniors
and the next hour and a half for adults. The clinic at the Junior High
would start May 9, 1975. Mr. Smith said he would like to hire Mr. Ron.
Petros to help with the clinics at Martz Field. TIle clinic would be on
:-ioTld2YS and Uednesd ?JYs from 3: 00 to 5: 00 P. [II. with 3 to 4 for the 8 to 11
year ulds and 4 to 5 for the 12 to 16 year olds. Mr. Smith said he felt
the clinics should be limited to 40 people to a group. Everyone agreed
Mr. Horl Petros whould be hired. Mr. Smith said he would run the clinic
fDr the adults at i"lartz FicJd from 5:00 to 7:00 P.["l. on f\;ondays and
