TOWN OF WAPPINGER RECREATION COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING WITH
DIRECTORS AND AIDES OF SUMMER PLAYG~mUNDS
JUNE 12, 1975
Present: Mr. Richard Garren, Mrs. Laura Zick and Mrs. Mary Schmalz
Directors Present: Miss Joanne Kalaka, Miss Sandy Snowden and Mr. Pat
Viglotti
Aides Present: Mrs. Ruth Francese, Miss Barbara Montross, Miss Donise
English, Miss Lisa DiPiero and Mr. Mark Schubert
Aides Absent: Mr. David Kaplan and Mr. Mike Spero
SUPPLIES
Miss Joanne Kalaka brought up the subject of buying supplies. She felt that
each Director should go out and find places where they can get things
cheaper, instead of everything being purchased in one place. Last year
they discovered that the Hobby Hut in Hughsonville was se~ling some things
much cheaper than Gelco. Miss Kalaka also said that a big problem is the
repetition of so many~things each year. Miss Kalaka felt they should try
different things such as deccupage, using every day things, instead of the
usual pot holders and games. Mr. Garren said this was just the sort of
thing the Recreation Commission wanted, original ideas.
SALARY
Mr. Richard Garren explained to everyone the work he had done with the
payroll and then presented each person with the salary they would be
receiving. Mr. Garren asked of everyone had read over the responsibilities
sheet~and asked if there were any comments. Everyone said they had read
them and no one had any comments to make. Mr. Garren then had everyone
sign a copy of the responsibility sheet. Miss Sandy Snowden asked of there
would be a boy assigned to the Hughsonville area. Mr. Garren .said he wanted
to try it without one and if Miss Snowden felt one was needed then possibly
one would be hired otherwise the three gentlemen at Martz Field could
float between Chelsea and Hughsonville areas. Mr. Garren explained that
last year the problem was too much help so this year the Commission
reduced the help and therefo~e can pay more money so hopefully they will
get more productivity. Mr. Garren also said the permission slips were
being changed and there would be just one slip for all the activities.
Everyone liked that idea.
ABSENCE
Mr. Garren asked everyone their feelings on being absent and sick. What did
they feel would be a fair way to handle it. Mrs. Schmalz asked if they
get paid for the days they are not there. Mr. Garren said yes they did.
Mr. Pat Viglotti felt if an Aide were sick he should call the Director of
his area and then the Director should contac Mrs. Laura Zick. Miss
Kalaka felt that it should be left the way it has been. She felt that
what happened last year was an exception and she agreed with Mr. Viglotti
that whoever is absent should call their Director. Mrs. Ruth Francese
felt that if the ~erson is really sick and he has been doing his job all
summer then his fellow aides will be quite willing to cover for him for

ABSENCE(conttd)
as long as he is sick. Everyone agreed.
HOURS
Mr. Garren presented everyone with a list of the Recreation Commission
Members and Town Board Members telephone numbers and also a list of
Emergency numbers. Mr. Garren said the playground hours are from 9:00 A.M.
to 3:00 P.M. with half an hour for lunch and they must stay on the
playground. no one is to~take off for lunch all at once. The Director is
to be at the playground at 8:45 A.M. and does not leave until 3:15 P.M.
Miss Joanne Kalaka asked if the Director has to stay until all the
children go home. Mr. Garren said no there would be an ad in the Shopper
stating the playground closes at 3:00 P.M. and that the Commission is not
responsible for children after that time. On rain days all the Directors
go to thei~ playgro~nd and stay for about half an hour to see if it is
going to stop raining. Mr. Garren said the Directors are responsible for
seeing that there is a flag raising every morning. Mr. Garren then asked
if everyone attended Millbrook. Everyone said yes except Miss Kalaka who
could not attend because it was the day of her graduation. Mrs. Schmalz
asked what was done at Millbrook. Mrs. Zick explained what the day was
like out there. Miss Kalaka asked about the supplies. Mr. Garren said
Mrs. Zick would take an inventory and discuss it with the Recreation
Commission at their June 26, 1975 meeting. Mrs. Zick asked Mr. Garren
if the playgrounds would have enough to do the first few days if they
waited until then for the inventory. Mr. Garren said yes, the first few
days are quite hectic and the Director and Aides would have to use their
ingenuity, but if anything were definitly needed then they should call
Mrs. Zick. Mrs. Barbara Montross asked if they were going to have the
ball games again. Mr. Garren said yes.
HUGHSONVILLE
Mr. Garren explained to Miss Sandy Snowden and Miss Donise English that
at the Hughsonville area only the Fire Commissioner Mr. Wally Hall has
charge of the field and they were no to take anything from any of the
other firemen. If there is any problem they are to call Mr. Garren.
Also they are to make sure that the toilet is cleaned once a week.
Mr. Garren complemented all the Directors and Aides on the job they did
last year and he stated tbat the Recreation Commission had received a
letter from the Chelsea Firemen praising the job th~t Mr. Viglotti,
Mrs. Frances8 and Miss Montross did at Chelsea last year.
Mr. Garren thanked everyone for coming down and said he hoped they all
have a nice summer.
Respectfully submitted,
