TOWN OF WAPPINGER RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF JUNE 26, 1975 MEETING
Next Meeting - July 24, 1975
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was
held at the Town Hall on June 26, 1975. The meeting was opened at 7:45 P.M.
Present: Mr. Hugh J. Maurer, Mr. George Schlathaus, Mr. Richard Garren,
Mr. Joseph Ennesser, Mrs. Jean Beahan, Mrs. Mary Schmalz and
Mrs. Laura lick
Absent: Mrs. Theresa Arkell
I~E rOOKIE PLAYERS
Mr. Dave Cunningham attended the meeting to discuss the Pookie Players.
Mr. Cunningham explained that the Pookie Players are a group of New Paltz
College Students interested in entertaining children. They are registered
with the state and are looking for bookings in Parks. They wrote, produced,
and designed the play and they charge $25.00 a performance. Mr. Cunningham
explained that they can do the play anywhere and the players supply all
their own equipment. They are available during the day on Tuesdays thru
Saturdays and after the performance the players stay and mingle with the
children and show them how they do different things in the play. Mrs. Mary
Schmalz asked Mr. Cunningham if they are members of the New York State
Council of the Arts. Mr. Cunningham said they were not this year because
they didn't get started in time to make the March 15th deadline. Hopefully'
next year they would be members. Mr. Maurer asked Mr. Cunningham which
dates he had open. M~. Cunningham said the last two weeks in July were
still open. The Recreation Commission agreed to have the play July 23rd
with July 25th as a rain.date. The performance would be a 1:00 P.M. and
Mrs. Lau~a lick would contact Mr. Cunningham to' inform him of the location.
SKI HAUS TOURS
Mr. Butch Hagan from Ski Haus Tours attended the meeting to apologize fo~
the mix up with the buses for the trip to Shea Stadium. Mrs. Laura lick
explained to the Commission that when the buses arrived the driver handed
her a bill and said the buses couldn't leave until they were paid in full.
Mr. Hagan explained that apparently the bus driver was knew and the whole
thing was unfortunate. Mr. Maurer said he felt that apparently Ski Haus
Tours did not have communication with the bus company and in the future
they should clarify it with the company so the bus drivers know what to do.
CORRESPONDENCE
A reply was received from the Carnegie Talent Agency. The Commission decided
to have Mr. Arnold Klein attend a meeting to explain the Agency1s services
to them. The secretary was requested to send a letter asking Mr. Klein to
attend one of the Commission's next two meetings which would be July 24 th
and August 14th.
A letter from the Red Cross was received explaining a new program they
offer on Health and Safety. Mr. Maurer asked Mrs. lick if the program
could work in the summer playground. Mrs. lick felt that it would. The
secretary was requested to send a letter telling the Red Cross that the
Commission was interested and Mrs. lick would be contacting them soon.

BAIRD PARK
Mr. Maurer informed the Commission that the Towns of Poughkeepsie, Wappingers,
and LaGrange were considering taking over the operation of the Baird
Park Pool. If they did so then Recreation could use the pool for their
Learn to Swim Program. Mr. Maurer felt it would be too costly to bus
the p~yground children to Baird for the regular swimming. Mr. Maurer
said that the Willows would be open this year but so far he and Mr.
Garren had been unable to get in contact with the owner.
SECURITY POLICE
Mr. Maurer reported that the Commission would be receiving some help from
the Town for Security Police. So far the vandalism amounted to $3,600.00
and it would probably reach $4,000.00 or more. Mr. Maurer also reported
that Councilman Frank Versace wants a chain put across the Reese Park
entrance. Mr. George Schlathaus felt that if that were done then the State
Troopers would no longer be able to drive up to check an the Park.
The Recreation Commission agreed to put the chain up and ask Mr. Luparelli
if he would take it down in the morning and put it up at night for $2.00
a day.
FOOTBALL TRIP
Mrs. Mary Schmalz reported that the football trip to West Paint would be
September 20, 1975 and it is a day that Ketcham High School has no game.
Mrs. Schmalz said she had spoken with Mr. Lynn of Ketcham and he has said
that he would like it to be a joint trip and he would provide his own
transportation. Mrs. Schmalz suggested that the Commission go ahead with
the trip and put an ad in the paper saying tickets are available to
everyone with identification cards. Everyone agreed.
IDENTIFICATION CARDS
Mr. Richard Garren felt the Commission Members should have something on
their identification cards which would identify them as members. Everyone
agreed and Mr. Maurer said for everyone to work on it and bring in their
suggestions at the next meeting.
SOCCER
Mrs. Schmalz said she would be attending a meeting concerning a soccer
program and she wanted to know where the Commission will have a soccer
field and if possible they would like to start the program in August.
Mr. Joseph Ennesser said the field would be at Robinson Lane and he
asked if one field would be enough. Mrs. Schmalz said one would really
not be enough. Mr. Ennesser said they could have two fields at Robinson
Lane and if they Ilad to they could probably use Quiet Acres. Mr. Maurer
informed everyone that after June 30th they should have 10 teenagers
and 5 men working and if anybody has anything that needs to be done, make
a list and give it to him.
BOOTH
Mrs. Schmalz repo~ted that she had spoken with two pilots and was making
plans to have aerial photos taken of the parks and also she had taken
36 rictures of tennis, baseball and the trip to shea, but she did not
Page 3---Recreation Commission---6/26/75
BOOTH cont'd
want to go ahead with the developing unless the Commission is definitely
going to have the booth. Mr. Maurer felt the Commission should have the
booth, the only problem would be getting someone to man it but that could
be worked out. Everyone agreed. Mrs. Schmalz agreed to ago ahead with all
the preparations and when she was finished she would give the material to
Mr. Ennesser or Mrs. lick.
Mr. Maurer repnpted that Mr. Frank Lombardi had donated his D B for
leveling off the Centennial Site. Unfortunately while the D B was left on
the site overnight someone tampered with it and it took Mr. Lombardi
two days to get it running again. The secretary was requested to send
a letter to Mr. Lombardi telling him how much the Recreation Commission
appreciated the time and effort he spent in leveling off the site.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mrs. Laura lick repopted that with the trip to Shea Stadium she felt that
there was a conflict of leadership. Mrs. lick felt that she had no control
and that Mrs. Schmalz was running everything. Mrs. lick said she had asked
that the Permission slips be collected after everyone was on the buses
but Mrs. Schmalz collected most of them before anyone was on the buses
and therefore Mrs. Zick had no idea who had a slip and who did ,not.
Mrs. Schmalz said she was sorry that Mrs. lick felt that way but she
felt that she did not take over. Mr. Maurer said the point was they
hire a Director to run the programs and trips and no member is to take
over and permission slips must always be collected as the people are
boarding the bus..lt is the best way to insure that everyone has signed
a permission slip. . .
Mrs. lick reported that so far there had only been one problem with the
summer playground employees. The problem had been with Miss Joanne Kalaka
but Mrs. lick and Mr. Garren had straightened it out. Mrs. Schmalz said
her neighbors had told her that they were very put out that Miss Kalaka
was Director of Martz playground. Mrs. Schmalz said a neighbor had told her
that last year she had watched Miss Kalaka and Miss Kalaka did nothing
but read for two days. Mr. Garren said her neighbor must be mistaken
because Miss Kalaka was Director of Hug~sonville last year not Martz.
Mr. Garren said that Miss Kalaka was made Director of Martz because she
has the experience.
Mrs. lick said she felt that they should hire another boy for the playgrounds
Mr. Maurer said he fe~t that Martz could spare one boy a morning.
Mr. Maurer said he felt that the Directors and Aids should not be paid
for the days they miss. Mr. Garren said he had not discussed that with
them. Mr. Schlathaus said he felt the Directors should be paid on
salary and the Aids hourly. Mrs. Mary Schmalz said she is opposed to
paying them for hours they do not work. Mrs. Beahan suggested that
they be alloted so many sick days.
Mrs. lick also repc~ed that she has decided to have a meeting with all
the Director and Aids every two weeks. and she has told them that they
are to have a program prepared for the next two weeks. Mrs. lick also
reminded the members to stop buy the playgrounds to check on things.
Page 4---Recreation Commission---6/26/75
TENNIS
Mrs. Schmalz said she felt that on the gate to the Tennis Courts there
should be a sign that says Town Identification Cards a Must. Mr. Ennesser
said the sign was already made up and it would be put up tomorrow.
Mr. Maurer asked how the sign-up system was working. Mr. Ennesser said
it was o~y but Mr. Smith would probably get soma complaints because
now the sheet is not up until 9:00 A.M. Mr. Ennesser reported that Mr.
Kevin Ryan has been hired to work at the courts on the days and nights
that Mr. Barry Smith has off. Mr. Maurer told Mrs. Zick to tell Mr.
Smith to work the playground children into the tennis program.
