The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation
Commission was held March 24, 1983 at Town Hall, Mill Street, Village of
Wappingers Falls, County of Dutchess, New York.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Hugh J. Maurer
at 7:45 with the following persons present: Joseph Mastroianni, Frank
Presti and Bill Wood.
The minutes of the February 17, 1983 meeting were approved on
a motion by Mr. Presti seconded by Mr. Wood. All were in favor.
VANDALISM
Mr. Maurer mentioned that there has been a lot of vandalism in
the past few weeks especially at Martz Field. The building has b~en
broken into and supplies strewn over the field. The barn has had the
plywood taken off the windows and helmuts that were in the barn were
thrown allover the Tennis Courts. He mentioned that a letter will be
sent to the Town Board requesting additional patrol.
.
Mr. Ronald Petro arrived at 7:55.
(lUIET ACRES
Mrs. Ellen Korz and a group of representatives from Quiet Acres
attended the meeting. They were concerned with the playground and the
petition that was sent to the Town Board and Recreation Commission by
Mrs. Marianne Rasch a resident of 45 Helen Drive. After a discussion it
was stated that there wouldn't be any tax increase because of the additions
to the playground equipment. The playground is scheduled for 5 days a
week this year. Mr. Maurer mentioned that he would see about getting a
bus for the transportation of the children to the swim program.
FIELDSTONE FARMS
Mr. Mastroianni questioned the progress on Fieldstone. Mr.
Maurer said it was still too muddy to do anything.
TOWN HALL
Mr. Mastroianni asked whether the Recreation Commission would
have any area in the new Town Hall. His main concern was for storage.
Mr. Maurer said we would probably have some space but didn't know yet since
no definite decisions have been made. As for storage, Mr. Wood mentioned
that we do have space at Schlathaus.

TENNIS
Mr. Petro mentioned that Helen Katz would not be the Tennis
Instructor this year. He asked about putting an ad in the newspaper.
It was suggested that he run a classified ad for an instructor in the
Southern Dutchess News and Poughkeepsie Journal.
LITTLE LEAGUE
Mr. Wood mentioned that a new letter was received from Mr.
Holt regarding their requests for fields for their baseball season.
Mr. Wood made a motion to accept this request subject to Mr. Ennesser's
scheduling. Mr. Presti seconded this motion. All were in favor. Opening
day will be April 23rd.
RACE
The Chairman of the Road Runners has asked for permission to
use Schlathaus Park in June for a race to advertise against the Power
Lines. He also said he wants to make the fall race bigger and longer
and gear it toward children. He wanted to know if we would supply
trophies for both races.
After a discussion, a motion was made not to permit this
"Power Line" race. All were in favor.
For the fall race, we will still provide trophies and it was
suggested we look into giving T-Shirts.
TRAVIS PROPERTY
A Mr. Ed Shelley wants to sell this land and approached
Mr. Maurer about the possibility of the Town acquiring it. This
offer was refused. He then came back with a counter offer that he
would own the land and if we gave him the minigg permit, he would
mine it and in a number of years develop a lake. At that time he
would transfer the deed to the Town at no cost. After a discussion
of this matter, Mr. Wood made a motion to pursue this and it. was
seconded by Mr. Presti.
Monday night March 28th at 8:30 we will have a workshop with
the Town Board to discuss this matter.
ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Presti was asked to contact Chief Pete Howell of the New
Hackensack Fire Company to see if the company could burn off the brush
and trees in the swamp area.

It was mentioned that the vandalism at the barn has been
extensive and because the plywood has been taken off the windows, the
inside has gotten wet. After a discussion, it was decided that since
there is no money now available for repairs that we should make the
barn secure and preserve what we have and when money is available start
again with bids.
SCHLATHAUS PROPERTY
Mr. Maurer asked that a letter be sent to James Spratt, Dept.
of Public Works, County Office Building, Poughkeepsie regarding the
possibility of putting in drains or a blind ditch to improve the drainage
at the above property.
CONCERT
Mr. Maurer said the concert was well accepted. The crowd
wasn't as big as last years but weather may have been a factor.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:20 on a motion by Mr. Presti
seconded by Mr. Petro.
