TOWN OF WAPPINGER - RECREATION COMMISSION
MAY 9, 1985
MINUTES
NEXT MEETING JUNE 1~,1985 at 8:00 P.M.
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was
held May 9, 1985 at Town Hall, Village of WappingersFa11s, County of Dutchess
New York.
Mr. Maurer opened the meeting at 8:10 with the following persons
present: Hugh J. Maurer, Chairman, Robert Blose, Director, Commission Members
Ellen Korz, Joseph Mastroianni, Frank Presti, Mary Schmalz, and Bill Wood.
Herb Stoller arrived at 8:40 p.m.
The minutes of the April 17, 1984 meeting were approved on a motion
by Mr. Presti seconded by Mr. Mastroianni.
Mr. Maurer reported that he had spoken with James Klein regarding the
Spook Hill Recreation Area. It was mentioned that the boccie court could
prove to be a problem of upkeep because of the type of surface. After a
discussion all members were in favor of replacing the boccie court with a
12 x 16 storage shed and making the parking lot 1/2 the size. Mr. Maurer
also mentioned that there were some problems getting concrete tables and that
fiberglass tables would be set in concrete instead.
Mr. Blose reported that a study of the Hughsonvi11e program showed that
1/2 of the children attending come from the east side of Route 9. A suggestion
was made and approved that the Hughsonvi11e Playground go swimming the first
two weeks of playground and then move to the Spook Hill Area if the site is
ready as projected.
Mr. Blose also reported that he has been working on several trips for
the playgrounds. He hopes to have 5 or 6 trips to Splashdown this year and
several bowling trips. He mentioned that fliers will go home from the schools
with information on the playgrounds.
Mr. Incoronato came into the meeting and questioned the equipment for
Fleetwood and the flagpole for Castle Point. He was told that Paul Labienec
of Miracle Recreation Equipment had called and that the new Playground equipment
is in for Fleetwood and the Flagpole has been ordered for Castle Point.
Mr. Blose reported that he was unable to get to Mi11brook to the
meeting on Summer Camp Regulations but he has spoken to Bill Green from East
Fishki11 Recreation. Both agreed that what we have is a Summer Playground
Program and that we don't want to be classified as a camp. If it is a camp
there are rigid rules and we don't want to get into that.

Mrs. Ballard came into the meeting to check on our recommendations
for Spook Hill and was told of our decisions. Mrs. Paino stopped in to
mention that she had received a number of complaints from women requesting
some type of privacy barrier be placed in front of the Ladies Room at
Robinson Lane. Mr. Presti and Mr. Blose will look into an L-shaped barracade.
Mr. Blose is still working on concert dates.
SCHLATHAUS PARK
Mr. Mastroianni, Mr. Presti and Mr. Maurer met with Mr. Fiore on the
6th of May. They discussed the needs and requirements for a band shell at the
platform at Sch1athaus. They are still trying to get some designs together.
Mrs. Schmalz suggested that they look at the A-Frame structure at Freedom
Park. Mr. Fiore will also check on some designs.
SENIOR CITIZENS
Mr. Mastroianni reported that next Tuesday the Senior Citizens are
planning to go on a trip to Mohonk. He also received a notice from the
Office of the Aging stating that several bowling lanes are offering free
bowling to Senior Citizens the week of May 6th.
He also received a letter from the State regarding reimbursement
of money for Bus Trips. After some investigation, he found out that we do
not get reimbursed. It was just outlining the rules which we already follow.
FLEETWOOD
Mr. Mastroianni asked what additional plans are for the Fleetwood
Playground after the swings are installed. Mr. Blose suggested a bulldozer
to level the ground but Mr. Maurer suggested that a survey be done to
determine our exact boundaries.
MARTZ FIELD
Mrs. Schmalz reported that she had painted the dugouts at Martz and
that Kira would be coming to put the finishing touches on the murals. The
blocks also have been replaced.
She also reported that when Silvestri was there to check out the
lights on the basketball court she asked if one light could be installed
so that it would shine toward the dugouts and building. She mentioned that
the tennis light box is broken and needs to be fixed again.
Mrs. Schmalz was concerned about the new doors on the building
at Martz Field being installed so that the alarm could be finished.

May 9, 1985
Mrs. Schmalz mentioned that she attended a Countywide Senior Citizen
program sponsored by the Putnam County Office of the Aging. Discussion was
held regarding medicare, etc. She found it very informative.
SWIM STUDY
Mr. Stoller asked if names were obtained at the meeting in Monticello
for a swim study. Mr. Maurer said he has some names and will contact people
to set up a meeting.
CHELSEA BOAT RAMP
Mr. Wood, Mr. Presti and Mr. Maurer are working on the dock which
will be put in at Chelsea.
SCHLATHAUS PARK
After a discussion it was suggested that prices be obtained for the
band shell and a new fence between Diesing's property and the Recreation Area.
Once the prices are obtained we should ask the Town Board to use the money
which is in the Schlathaus Fund set up for improvements to the Park.
BASKETBALL LIGHTS
Silvestri is scheduled to do the basketball lights this week. It was
suggested that he also check on the Tennis Lights and see about attaching the
electric light on the Flag Pole at Schlathaus so the dead tree could be removed.
PAINTING OF RECREATION BUILDINGS
A suggestion was made to paint all recreation buildings the same color
to make upkeep easier. By doing this the murals at Martz would be removed. A
discussion took place regarding the pros and cons and it was suggested that at
the next meeting a maintenance plan be implemented.
YOUTH ACTIVITIES
Mr. Stoller suggested that some type of youth activities be held for
teenagers during the summer. Mr. Stoller, Mrs. Korz and Mr. Blose will work
on this.
BARN
Mr. Presti mentioned that a proposal be brought forth on the barn.
In its present state it poses a serious problem and is a potential hazard. We
will discuss this at the next meeting.
