RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES
JANUARY 11, 1990
NEXT MEETING FEBRUARY 8, 1990 AT 8:30 AT BREXEL-SCHLATHAUS PARK
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission
was held January 11, 1990 at Brexel-Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town
of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York.
The meeting was called or order at 7:30 p.m. with the following persons
present: Ralph J. Holt, Chairman, Bernie Reimer, Director, and Commission Members
Hugh J. Maurer, Joseph Mastroianni, and Donald Rider. Also attending was Town
of Wappinger Little League President Gary Mensching.
The minutes of the December 14, 1989 meeting were approved on a
motion by Mr. Rider seconded by Mr. Maurer.
CORRESPONDENCE
A card of thanks was received from the Faith Bible Church for supporting
community activities by allowing them to use Brexel-Schlathaus Park for a Community
Concert last Fall.
A letter of thanks was received from Trudy H. Briggs, Principal of
Vassar Road School for the use of our Caldron for their school drama "The Wizard
of OZ."
An application was received from Heritage Task Force for the Hudson
River Valley, Inc. for the 1990 Harold L. Hoffman Community Awards. It was
recommended that Mr. Wood be asked to review it to see if we might be able to
apply for an award.
A letter was received from Yvonne M. Tompkins, Secretary, Chelsea
Fire District thanking us for our promptness in removing the playground equipment
from the "Schoolhouse". The letter mentioned that a piece of equipment which
was cut in half for removal was still there. We will check with Mr. Vorndran
on this. The letter also mentioned that "back in August the Recreation Department
was going to assist in repairing the retaining wall." They are still hoping we
will assist them. The Commission felt that we did everything we are going to do
and in light of the fact that we were removed from the premises, we felt it wasn't
fair that we are again asked to do the work. Mr. Holt will write a letter to
the Fire District.
A letter was received from Jack Wheeler, Foxhill Development Co.
regarding the Community Service work that he arranged with Former Supervisor
Irene Paino to do at the bandstand at Schlathaus Park. In the letter he sent an
invoice for materials in the amount of $233.98. It is our understanding that
that charge will now have to come from the Recreation Budget.

January II, 1990
A letter was received from Daniel J. Randall, P.E. regarding Chelsea
Heights Subdivision. In his letter he mentioned that he had reviewed the 8 items
of work which we requested be done at Castle Point in lieu of land. In his
letter he mentioned that he felt that it would be to the Town's advantage to
accept payment of recreational fees since he felt that the Commission could
accomplish more items of work using the fee to hire local independent contractors.
It was unanimously agreed that we take the money.
It was discussed that a presentation be made for the Town Board
noting that the priorities for 1990 are Castle Point, Rockingham and Reese Park.
Mr. Maurer suggested that we write to B. & D Contracting and Roger Humeston (R.G.H.)
to get some ideas on how much each item might cost prior going to the Board.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer mentioned that the Wednesday night volleyball and Tuesday
night basketball programs are still on hold because they are still waiting for
parts to attach the bleachers to the walls at the Junior High.
He has scheduled the Saturday morning basketball program to start
January 20th at Sheafe Road School. Len Reed will be in charge of this program.
Mr. Reimer mentioned that last March we had an indoor Magic Show
and he thought we might want to plan an indoor concert this year. One of the
suggestions was the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. It was decided that he look into
this. We should still try and get a West Point Band for one of our Concerts.
It was suggested that we put on a first aid training for Coaches and
Managers of Little League, Soccer, Pop Warner, and leaders of Boy and Girl Scouts.
Mr. Reimer will check on this and try and get information on it. He will check on
obtaining a cafeteria for some time in March.
Mr. Mastroianni mentioned that he had read in the paper recently that
the Sons of Italy has given money to the East Fishkill Recreation for a security
system and the Lions and Rotary in LaGrange were helping to rebuild the band-
stand at Freedon Park. He asked about trying to get support from our local
organizations for projects. Mr. Holt said that a presentation would have to be
formulated and letters sent to the organizations. A number of them were suggested
such as Elks, Oddfellows, Rotary, Lions, MasoRs,K. of C.,Chamber, Kiwanis, and
Twin Lakes. Mr. Holt will work on this.
Mr. Holt mentioned that there were some frozen pipes at Schlathaus
and that they had to get John Ossenkop in to fix them. The Water heater had to
be replaced. We also had some trouble with the oil tank at the barn during the
terrific cold spell. We will have to think about moving it when the weather
gets warmer.

January II, 1990
Mr. Holt mentioned that Mr. Vorndran was getting prices on new mowers
and had sent in a brochure on one. Mr. Maurer said he felt that any equipment
purchased should come before the full Commmission for approval. It was agreed
that this be the procedure.
SENIOR CITIZEN
Mr. Mastroianni mentioned that Supervisor Smith had approached Mrs.
Powers and said that they are contemplating making an extension to the Senior
Citizen Room and wants to get an idea of the cost and what they want in regards to
space. They also asked him to attend this meeting. Mr. Holt was not aware of
the meeting but recommended that Mr. Mastroianni try and attend.
DI PALMA SUBDIVISION
After reviewing the revised Subdivision Plat, the Commission still
recommends that the Town take lots 18 & 19 for recreational purposes.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 on a motion by Mr. Maurer seconded
by Mr. Mastroianni.
