CORRESPONDENCE A letter was received from Anne McMahon of 47 Widmer Road regarding the TOwn leasing her property for recreation purposes. Mr. Vorndran mentioned that he thought the land was wet and rocky. It was suggested that we write a letter that we are not interested in leasing. We would, however, like to look at the property and discuss a price if she were interested in selling. A letter was received from Albert P. Roberts, Attorney to the Town regarding the land swap with Joseph H. Fulton, Jr. He mentioned in his letter that he had sent papers to Mr. Fulton in September for his signature but has not heard from him. He said he is still working on this and that he will sign the papers. A letter was received from Herb Levenson, Zoning Administrator regarding the Rymer Subdivision on Old Hopewell Road. In the letter it was stated that the Planning Board requested Recreation to do a second evaluation of the recreation land possibilities by October 29th. Mr. Holt mentioned that he had forwarded to the Planning Board a letter stating that we have decided to accept the land (1.77 ac.) plus the $3,600 as long as the developer puts in a roadway. He also said that he attended the Planning Board Meeting and discussed the development with the Board and indicated that the Recreation Commission's plan was to use this area along with the property received in the Noto Subdivision as the future site of the Hughsonville Playground. SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT Mrs. Delisa handed out a report on the senior activities for the month of October 1992 and also noted the following: 1. The craft fair held on the 23rd was a huge success. It included crafts, a bake sale, Granny's attic, book sale and raffles. lunch was also served by "Chef Tony" in the Senior Citizen Room. 2. A Halloween party was held on the 30th and most of the seniors came in costume. All seniors who came in costume received a "goodie bag". Pizza was served for lunch. 3. Other programs in October included a fire prevention program, a representative from the Office of the Aging, a flu clinic, and blood pressure screening. 4. The Roseland Ranch trip scheduled for October 20th had to be rescheduled to November 17th. 5. An Art Show will be held at the Chase Manhattan Bank at the South Hills Mall starting December 1st. The paintings done by the Seniors will be on display. 6. There will be a Thanksgiving luncheon on Greenbaum and Gilhooley's on the 19th of November. 7. Brownie Troop 440 will visit on the 20th. 8. The Townwide Christmas Party is coming along thanks to the Elks Club. We have the hall, cook, servers and a 4 piece band. Apprximately 150 letters have been sent to local businesses and professionals requesting their support. We will need approximately $900. to cover the cost of the meal for the estimated 200 people attending. Mr. Holt, Mrs. Delisa and Mr. Miller will be meeting with Mr. Russ Benes of the Elks at 7:00 p.m. on the 23rd of November to go over final arrangements. A notice will be in the paper on November 18th giving a date of November 20th at 10:00 to call for reservations. Reservations will be on a first come first serve basis and will be for Town residents only. We will not be serving alcohol. Mrs. Delisa has contacted Dial - A - Ride and they will accommodate only 21 riders for that date. , , Recreation Minutes November 9, 1992 Page 3 DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Reimer reported the following: 1. He has received an okay from the school district for the summer transportation for 1993. They were pleased with the way we staggered the runs thereby limiting the number of personnel needed for the buses. 2. After receiving verbal approval and forwarding a written request to use Ketcham auditorium for the West POint Band concert on March 5th, he has now received a call rejecting our request. It seems that a magic show using the auditorium facitilies recently ruined some show sets and therefore they are not letting anyone use the facilities. Mr. Reimer has been in touch with the West Point Band and they have looked at the facilities at the Jr. High and have said that they were okay if we are unable to turn around the Ketcham decision. Mr. Reimer was requested to try and see if he could still turn around the decision on Ketcham -- to contact Mr. Biasotti, Principal if necessary. Mr. Fisher requested that Mr. Reimer get a count on how many band members would actually be staying for refreshments after the concert so we could plan a menu. 3. He has received a contract from the Dickens Band for the Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 6th. 4. Fall/Winter programs are going well -- Approximately BO people for aerobics which now has to be closed. Basketball and volleyball programs are also having a good attendance. ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP Miss Gutzler mentioned that she had been in touch with "Ducks Unlimited" an environmental group. They are referring her request for consultants to their head biologist in Pennsylvania. She spoke with Cliff Herring about whether their group did consultations free of charge or were available to advise us on the environmental value of land and to consult with us on the development of parks for outdoor education. Right now it is still at the talking stage if they could do anything at a minimal cost or at no charge. She will still work on this. HALLOWEEN PARTY Mr. Holt thanked Mrs. Korz for the super job on the Halloween Party. Although the weather was "brisk" we had approximately 80 children registered. Every child that attended received a gift whether they were a prize winner or not. It was mentioned that McDonald's has done a super job. Mrs. Korz said that she had sent thank you letters to all the businesses for their donations. She also mentioned that she thought that Mr. Renta and the Prevention Players would be willing to do something each year. If they come back next year it was suggested that they go on the program earlier. Mrs. DeLisa asked about a haunted house and suggested Schlathaus for it. Mrs. DeLisa, Mrs. Korz and Miss Gutzler will work on this for next year. Recreation Minutes November 9, 1992 Page 4 ROBINSON LANE Mr. Holt mentioned that we will not be able to do the blacktopping this year but we have scraped the area and it is ready to be done in the Spring. Mr. Fisher and Mr. Miller will go out to Robinson Lane and mark the bleachers which they feel need to be fixed or replaced. Other items for 1993 are to repair the roof and do some fencing repair especially on R1. Mr. Vorndran mentioned that they have planted approximately 1/2 dozen trees by field #11 (SB3). There have been several requests to get into Robinson Lane after October 30th when Lucy Doroni is finished for the season and the gate is not opened on a daily basis. Many people like to go fishing, jog along the road or hit golf balls during the off season. It was suggested that a walk gate be installed. Mr. Vorndran will see about doing this work. We also discussed the posibility of moving the fence in and placing the gate further in so that a parking area could be made to the right as you enter the park. We will discuss this further in 1993. CHRISTMAS PARTY We still have to get the P.O. 's for Meadowbook to order the refreshments and decorations. The tent is ordered from Budd's Party Tents. Mr. Vorndran is still checking on the heaters and lights and we will have to get appropriate P.O.ls Mrs. Roe will check with the Fire Company about Santa arriving on the Fire Truck and about using their facilities to war the chocolate and cider. Mr. Holt mentioned that Little League will again give out popcorn. In order not to drag the program and not to run too late, it was decided that Santa should arrive a little earlier around 5:30. The tree on the stage will be decorated around noon on the 6th. All help from the commission would be appreciated. SOCCER Mr. Rider mentioned that soccer would need an additional 20 bags of marking chalk for this season. Mrs. Roe will get the P.O. and Mr. Vorndran will pick it up during the week. Mr. Rider is still discussing with soccer the use of a paint machine for next year. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Mr. Holt mentioned the following: 1. He spoke with Supervisor Smith and Jay paggi about Castle Point and was told that D.E.C. has approved it. They have, however, come back with a map and gradings which states that we need a base of approximately 4,000 yards of clay there. Mrs. Smith said that the Town has approached James Klein to see about getting the clay from him. The clay was checked by Mr. Paggi and determined to be okay. A price was received to have it trucked to Castle Point and now Supervisor Smith is working on getting this done. . " Recreation Minutes November 9, 1992 Page 5 2. A committee, independent of Little League, has been set up to see about putting in lights at 2 fields at Robinson Lane (Memorial Field and a Little League Field) They will keep us informed on the plans. We definitely feel that the big boy field should be done but we are not altogether in agreement with the Little League Field but we will wait on the proposals. 3. There has been trouble at Martz Field with kids skating on the tennis courts. They gave both Mr. Holt and Mr. Vorndran a hard time so they ended up calling the sheriff. They indicated to the kids that they were ruining the courts and that we had paved the parking area on the other side of the ball field for them to skate on. When the sheriff arrived he told them to leave and that the next time they were there they would get a summons. Mr. Holt mentioned that we have now turned off the area light and we are now locking and unlocking the courts each day. 4. The fence work at the volleyball courts have been completed. 5. Mrs. White has agreed to give us land and Supervisor Smith is working on this. 6. The golf course proposed for Myers Corners is still in the works. They have had some problems with the D.E.C. 7. Mr. Broadie of our maintenance department has made a wishing well which will be placed over the well pipe at Schlathaus. B. Ten crab and cherry trees have been planted at Schlathaus along All Angels Hill Road. 9. We will be asking the Highway Department to help us with the clearing of dead trees and scrub across from the Castle POint Park. 10. Mr. Vorndran will be purchasing material to enclose the shed at the Montfort Road property. We will do most of the work ourselves. 11. The fence at Quiet Acres has been repaired. 12. Supervisor Smith is working with Central Hudson about fixing lights at Reese Park for ice skating this winter. 13. Airport Park is coming along and looks good. Winter rye has been planted. 14. Pop Warner has requested that the Town help them pay for a bus so that they could attend a tournament in Williamsport Pa. on November 21st. This was approved. 15. We have to discuss with Mr. Paggi's office our plans for Schlathaus in preparation for Tri-Municipal. The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 on a motion by Mr. Rider seconded by Mr. Miller. NOVEMBER 1992 REPORT TO RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 1992 SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER October activities at the Senior Citizen Center included the regular schedule of arts/crafts, exercise, oil painting, videos, cards and pokeno. The big event for October was the annual craft fair held on the 23rd. The turnout was great! The Fair included the sale of crafts, a bake sale, Granny's Attic, book sale and raffles. The raffle prizes were handmade and donated by some of the Seniors. There were 5 raffle winners and 2 door prize winners. Lunch was served at a low cost in the Senior Citizen room. A record breaking turnout for "Chef Tony"s famous baked ziti. All in all, a very successful and fun qay for the Seniors. On the 30th, the Seniors had a Halloween Costume party. The costumes were fantastic from cave people to Dracula. The judges, Connie Smith and two town employees chose the prize winners and of course won a prize. All Seniors dressed in costume were given a "treat" bag filled with apples, candy, a toy and other "goodies." Cider and donuts were served throughout the day. For lunch we had a pizza party. All had a great time! Other October activities included a fire prevention program sponsored by the Hughsonville Fire Dept. on the 7th, Diana Weibrecht from the Office of the Aging on the 8th, a flu clinic on the 15th and Blood Pressure screening on the 20th. There was an average of 35 Seniors per day at the Center. The average Monday attendance was 12. There are 184 Seniors registered at the Center and 38 Seniors on the waiting list. ITEMS TO BE NOTED: 1. The trip to Roseland Ranch scheduled for Oct. 20th was cancelled by Roseland. However, we have rescheduled this trip to Nov. 17th. All those with reservations were notified. Those not able to change their plans to accommodate the new date had their monies refunded. 2. The Senior Citizen oil painting class will have an art show at Chase Manhattan Bank at South Hills beginning December. I will be spending some time at the Bank to hang the paintings and artwork. 3. November activities include a Thanksgiving luncheon at Greenbaum and Gi1hoo1ey's on the 19th. The Center will be closed. Brownie Troop ~440 will visit the seniors on the 20th. The Center will be closed Nov. 3, 11, 26,& 27 to observe holidays. 4. December!! Party Time!! The Seniors will have their Center luncheon at Villa Borghese on the 11th. I am presently working on a Christmas party for the Center for Dec. 18. More next month. ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED: 1. The Christmas party open to the Town of Wappinger Seniors sponsored by the community is moving along nicely. We are still short funds at this time, but hope this is only temporary. We have secured the Elks Club for Dec. 15th from Noon to 3 p.m. The Elks Club is generously providing the cooks and servers as well as the space. The menu will include: Fruit cup, salad, turkey dinner with dressing, mashed potato, gravy and green bean a1mondine, rolls and butter. Dessert will be pumpkin pie. The cost of this dinner will be $4.50 per person. This means we need $900.00 to cover the cost for our estimated 200 people. Peggy has sent out approx. 150 letters to the local businesses requesting support for this function. So we have the place, the menu and even a four piece band and hopefully we will have the money to make this happen. I am attempting to contact girl scouts or some group to m~ke table centerpieces to be raffled at the end of the evening. Any suggestions, phone numbers or contacts are welcome. We also need gifts for Santa to hand out. Letters have gone to food market chains, Karl Ehmer, and wineries. Any other suggestions are welcome. Ralph and I will be meeting with The Exalted Ruler, Russ Benes in the near future to make final arrangements. This Christmas dinner will be open to all Town of Wappinger Seniors on a first come first serve basis. An announcement will be forthcoming next week in the Southern Dutchess paper to give all a fair chance to respond. --- NOVEMBER 1992 " TOWN OF WAPPINGER SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER: OPEN 10:00A.M.-3:00P.M. 20 Middlebush Rd., Wappingers Falls, NY. 12590 Phone: 297-3670 Director: Kathi DeLisa MON.
