NEXT MEETING JANUARY 11, 1993 AT 7:45 P.M.
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission
was held December 14, 1992 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of
Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J.
Holt. Others present were Senior Citizen Director Kathi DeLisa, Commission Members
Terry Fisher, Ellen Korz, Joseph Mastroianni, Stephen Miller, Donald Rider and
Maintenance Supervisor John Vorndran.
The minutes of the November 9, 1992 meeting were approved on a
motion by Mr. Rider seconded by Mr. Miller with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was forwarded to us from Supervisor Smith's Office from
Dutchess County Youth Bureau. The letter stated that they have recommended a
grant of $7,000. in support of recreation programs. Of course, this grant is
contingent on approval by the New York State Division of Youth.
A memo was received from Thomas Classey, Building Inspector for
the Town of Wappinger stating that the recreation structures at various sites
were inspected and found to be safe and in compliance with N.Y. State Code.
The only structure yet to be inspected is Schlathaus and that will be done in
the near future.
A letter was received from Frank G. Dubuy of West Point. In this
letter he stated that since the Concert Band had appeared in Wappingers in 1991
and 1992 that the Jazz Knights have been scheduled to perform for us on Friday
March 5th at 8:00 p.m. The contact person for this would be Sergeant 1st Class
Harsch at 938-3309/3249.
A letter was received from Supervisor Smith congratulating the
Commission on the terrific job and stating that she appreciates the dedication
and time given on behalf of the Town of Wappinger.
A letter was received from Floyd Scholz, Tournament Director of
the Dutchess County Girls Fastpitch Softball Club. He requested the use of the
Robinson Lane Complex for their 5th Annual Invitational Tournament to be held
July 24, 25, with a raindate of July 26th. Approval was given as long as there
are no Town of Wappinger tournaments. If they are the only people using the
facility, the store will not be open. However, he must understand that if the
Town is hosting a tournament the same weekend that the store will be open.

2. Letter to Town Board - Re: transfer of funds for stipend

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. Delisa handed out a report on the Senior activities for the
month of November which is attached and noted the following:
Activities for the month included a Thanksgiving luncheon at
Greenbaum and Gilhooley's on November 19th, on November 20th Brownie Troop #440
visited and brought huge baskets of food which were raffled off at the Center's
Christmas parties.
The regular Office of Aging representative was here on the 12th ,
blood pressure screening was on the 17th and the monthly birthday party was on
the 20th. The bus trip to Roseland Ranch had many positive comments.
For December, we have a trip to Peddlers Village on the 8th,
an 80th birthday party will be held on December 4th for Tony, the Center's
Christmas luncheon will be held at the Villa on the 11th, and the Center's Party
at Town Hall on the 18th. The Senior Oil Painting Class has an exhibit at the
Chase Manhattan Bank at the South Hills Mall for the month of December. Mr.
Mastroianni said that he had been to see it and that it was an outstanding exhibit.
The Townwide party at the Elks Club is coming along well with an
estimated 174 Seniors signed up. Centerpieces are being made, raffle items
purchases or picked up and gifts for Santa to give out obtained.
Mrs. Roe and Mrs. Delisa are working on setting up the bus trips
for 1993. Prices have been obtained from a couple of bus companies.
ORIENTEERING
Mr. Mastroianni and Mr. Holt met with Edward Hicks regarding the
above program. Mr. Hicks explained that Orienteering started in Sweden as a
competitive sport. He uses it as educational as well as recreational by showing
individuals the skill of map reading. He said that he would be willing to come and
teach us how to carry out such a program adaptible to all ages. Mr. Holt suggested
that we have him come and speak with us on a night other than our meeting night.
It was decided fora meeting sometime in April and if we go for the program to
invite boy scout and girl scout leaders to attend.
POP WARNER
Mr. Miller mentioned that he went to Florida for the Pop Warner
tournament over December 4th weekend. During that time a discussion came about
over recreation land available for Pop Warner. The Commission questioned if
the Airport Park property deed actually was written with the restriction "for
soccer only". Mrs. Roe was asked to check on this.

ROCKINGHAM PARK
Mr. Vorndran noted that soccer had sprayed something on the lines
to kill the grass and that it looks terrible. Mr. Rider was requested to find
out what they used and a letter will be written to Mr. Kennedy regarding this.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt noted the following:
1. The Christmas Party on the 6th went well even though it was
very cold. Thanks to the following for helping:
1. Mr. Rider for helping with the electric and parking.
2. Mrs. Korz, Mrs. Waldron, Mrs. DeLisa, Tony from Senior Center
Mr. & Mrs. Brudnak and Sue for serving refreshments.
3. Bernie Roe for helping with parking
4. Doug Roe for helping Peg warm the drinks at the firehouse
5. Sylvia Holt for helping Santa give out gifts.
6. Bill Verlin (Santa)
7. Little League for giving out popcorn
8. Mr. Reimer for help with the sound system and all the incidental
running and help cleaning up.
Mr. Vorndran and Mr. Weber did an outstanding job with the decorations and getting
everything ready. They worked almost all day Sunday getting everything ready. It
was noted that we need more help for the maintenance that day.
2. He received a call from a neighbor at Rockingham that kids were
skating on the pond. A sign will be put up "No Skating".
3. A couple to trees (a maple and cedar tree) were cut down at
Spook Hill. The roof also is missing more shingles. We will have to repair this
in the Spring.
4. Supervisor Smith is getting bids to move the dirt to Castle
POint. When this is done we will have to work on the 3rd field. We really need
another softball field to take the pressure off soccer.
December 16th.
5. Bids for the new truck and mower will be opened on Wednesday,
6. The golf course on Myers Corners Road is still in the works.
7. We have purchased some of the material to build the building
behind the barn.

8. We had an electrician over to look at the stove at Schlathaus
and he recommended that the stove not be fixed. He didn't think it was worth
fixing. We also need a new refrigerator (a smaller one).
9. Mr. Vorndran and the maintenance guys put in a walkway at
Robinson Lane so residents could get into the park off season. Next year we will
have to look into moving the gate and fencing for parking.
10. Mr. Holt is invited to attend a workshop on December 21st about
fees in lieu of land. There is talk about raising it from $900. to possibly $1,500.
Mr. Holt said he is in favor of raising it. It was also noted that in 95% of the
cases the Commission would recommend we take land but we should be left with an
option.
11. Supervisor Smith is working on getting funds to expand the
Senior Center. She had all the Seniors write letters to Senator Saland and these
will be delivered to his office.
12. He received a letter from Mr. Harry Lynch, Engineer for the
Rymer Subdivision regarding the construction of a roadway. A letter will be sent
to him stating that we recommend recreation receive 1.7 acres plus dollars and as
far as the roadway is concerned that is the responsibility of the Planning Board.
Mr. Holt thanked all the members of the Commission for their
support during 1992. We accomplished a lot - including skateboarding site, volleyball,
a board for tennis, the addition of tools and many other items.
Programs starting in January are Boys and Girls Basketball at
Sheafe Road School and Gymnastics at Myers Corners School. Sign ups for these
programs will be on Janaury 9th from 10:00 to 12:00 at each school. The other
programs will resume on January 4th.
The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Mr. Miller seconded by
Mr. Rider at 8:45.

DECEMBER 1992 REPORT TO RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 1992
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
November activities at the Senior Citizen Center included
the regular schedule of arts/crafts, exercise, oil painting,
videos, cards and pokeno. The Center was closed Nov. 3 for
Election Day, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day, Nov. 19, for our
Thanksgiving luncheon and Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving.
The annual Thanksgiving luncheon was held at Greenbaum
and Gilhooley's Restaurant on Nov. 19. Eighty seniors
attended. On Nov. 20, Brownie Troop 440 visited the
seniors. They brought baskets of food to be distributed to
the seniors. These baskets will be raffled at the Christmas
luncheon and Christmas party. The Brownies sang several
songs and even taught the seniors a fun song so they could
join them singing. Cake and soda were served to the
Brownies. Each Brownie was given a hand crocheted doll
plaque as a token of appreciation. It was a delightful
afternoon.
Diana Weibrecht from the Office of the Aging was at Town
Hall on the 12th to answer questions and to assist seniors
on issues relating to services provided by the agency. The
Heart Assoc. provided blood pressure screening on the 17th.
And our monthly birthday party was held on the 20th.
There were great reports on the trip to Roseland Ranch
held on the 17th.
Several seniors have written letters to Senator Saland
requesting his assistance for expansion of the Senior room.
All letters were given to Connie Smith, who will in turn,
hand deliver these to the Senator.
There was an average of 35 Seniors per day at the Center.
The average Monday attendance was 16. There are 184 Seniors
registered at the Center and 40 on the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. The trip to Peddler's Village is scheduled for Dec. 8.
2. The Senior Citizen oil painting class is displaying their
art works at Chase Manhattan Bank at South Hills as of
Monday, Dec. 7.
3. December events include party! party! party! On Dec. 4
there will be a surprise birthday party for Tony, who will
be 80. And then our monthly birthday party will be held on
the 10th. Our Christmas luncheon will be held at Villa
Borghese on the 11th. And our Center Christmas party is on
the 18th.
ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED:
1. What time will Santa be available to visit at the
Christmas party on the 18th?
2. Arrangements for the Christmas dinner at the Elks Club
are being finalized. We have an estimated 174 seniors and
guests attending. Centerpieces for the table have been made
by East Fishkill Cadet Troop 411. It is suggested that the
oldest senior at the table will take the centerpiece home.
Peggy and I have chosen several gift items to be raffled at
the dinner, compliments of Shop Rite and Grand Union. There
are also gift certificates from Metzger's Meat Market and a
car wash. Each Senior will receive a small bottle of wine,
candy cane and a 2 oz. box of candy.
Seniors who have signed up for this dinner, have been
given a ticket. A matching numbered ticket has been placed
in a raffle box for the raffle drawings. There will also be
name tags at the door for each senior and guest. This
should help us to obtain an exact attendance count and give
us some control. Results to be reported next month.
3. Peg has estimates for bus trips from several different
tour agents. We will be planning these next month.

Are you ready for a party or two? Are you ready for a
surprise or two? Well, we certainly have lots of parties
this month. To start, please note the monthly birthday
party is at the beginning of the month on Thurs., Dec. 10.
If you have not contributed a birthday cake this year, now
is your chance. We need 3 cakes, please let me know if you
will volunteer to bring one.
We start partying with our Christmas luncheon at Villa
Borghese on Fri., Dec. 11. You must sign up and pay for the
luncheon by Dec. 4th. There will be no refunds if you
should cancel after that day. There have been questions as
to our policy regarding the cost of this luncheon, so let me
try to clarify our policy. Our Christmas luncheon is our
last special luncheon for the year. The cost to you is
based on the dues that yoU pay weekly. Of course, our craft
sales and raffle sales help to make this luncheon special as
well as providing other activities throughout the year. The
majority of you, pay your dues weekly and pay the very
special rate for this luncheon. There are a few Seniors who
have become members to the Center just in the past few .-
months. For those members and any member who has not paid
weekly dues throughout the year, the cost of the luncheon is
the full price of the meal. Our Christmas luncheon is the
only luncheon when the cost is less than half of the full
price. Paying dues, selling and buying raffles, making and
selling crafts all help to provide this luncheon, other
luncheons and parties possible. I hope this helps to
clarify our policy.
Now, on to more party news. Jingle Bells! HO! HO! HO!
On Dec. 15 at Noon, Town of Wappinger Seniors are invited to
attend a Christmas dinner at the Elks Club on Rt. 376. This
is made possible through the gracious support of our local
merchants and professionals. This is open to ALL Seniors
residing in the Town of Wappingers. You must have a blue
Town 1.0. card and must sign up for this dinner by Fri. Dec.
4~. Reservations are on a first come/first serve basis to
the first 185 seniors. Reservations can be made at the
Recreation Office at Town Hall.
HO! HO! HO! Our Center Christmas party will be held on
Fri. Dec. 18 in the large meeting room. You MUST sign up if
you plan to attend. Also, as most of you have agreed, I
will be inviting the employees at the Town Hall as a token
of our appreciation for all the support they have given us
throughout the year. I have arranged for this party to be
catered. JINGLE BELLS! The buffet will consist of Chicken
Marsala, Baked Ham, oven roasted potatoes, rice pilaf, green
bean casserole and salad. However, we will need some extra
desserts. If you will volunteer to bring cookies or
dessert, please see me. Your assistance and contribution
will be appreciated. Surprises blow in with the season's
parties! HO! HO! HO! JINGLE! JINGLE! JINGLE BELLS!
Between all these parties, there are still days to
exercise, do crafts, watch videos and play cards. Please
note that blood pressure screening is cancelled this month,
but will resume in January. The Center will be closed
Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
, Last year, we put together a basket for a family going
through hard times. Your generosity helped an elderly
couple, who were ill and unable to buy food due to their
extra high medical costs. I will have a basket for you to
contribute to and fill again this year. I hope to have a
name of family soon and will let you know so we can choose
the appropriate items needed to fill the basket.
Speaking of baskets--the baskets brought to the Center by
Brownie Troop 440 will be raffled at the Christmas luncheon
to members of the Center.
Well, I am partied out, but I want to wish each and every
one of you a very Happy Holiday and a healthy, Happy New
Year. A BIG HUG FOR ALL OF YOU!!! YOU ARE WONDERFUL!!
