NEXT MEETING MAY 10, 1993 AT SCHlATHAUS PARK AT 7:30 P.M.
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission
was held April 12, 1993 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of
Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J.
Holt. Others present were: Kathi Delisa, Senior citizen Director, Bernie Reimer,
Recreation Director, Commission Members Terry Fisher, Barbara Gutzler, Ellen
Korz, Stephen Miller, Donald Rider and Maintenance Supervisor John Vorndran.
The minutes of the March 22, 1993 meeting were approved on a motion
by Miss Gutzler seconded by Mrs. Korz with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from Gary Mensching, President of the Town of
Wappinger little league listing the items which will be purchased with the
assistance of the $6,000. contributed by the Town of Wappinger toward the operation
of little league.
A letter was received from Florence Graff, Chairwoman of the Town of
Wappinger Conservation Advisory Council. She requested the use of Schlathaus
Park on April 24th to give away free tree seedlings. She also requested that
we place a notice of the event on our billboard at the Park and that we provide
2 long fold out tables. She would also like to have the building open for a
slide program. This request was approved.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. Delisa handed out a report on the activities of the Center for
the month of March. See Attached. She also noted the following:
1. She hasn't had a big response on the senior swim program.
2. She spoke with Jack Barmello of Holiday Hoe Bowl regarding a bowling
program. He would be happy to come and discuss this with us. He also suggested
a Bowl a Than program whereby a group earns money and the Town would match it.
We thought that this would take a lot of administrative work and we were not
ready for this.
3. Betty Mensching sent a letter requesting volunteer help for the
Eastern Regionals.

DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer reported the following:
1.
not returning.
Russell.
We have appointed a summer director to replace Amy Slacin who is
We had several good applications and the one he has hired is Amy
2. He is meeting with Amy Russell and Amy Slacin tomorrow April 13th
to complete the hiring. He also noted that we only have 4 or 5 openings for
positions. The rest of the staff will be returning.
3. We received the application packets from the Health Department
and they will be filled out. We also received a letter from the Health Dept.
stating that the Standard First Aid and C.P.R. are not acceptable for our
counselors. We were notified that the course requirement is now "Responding to
Emergencies" a 24 hour class at a cost of $150. per applicant. We really feel
that this requirement is excessive especially since we are served by Sloper for
most emergencies and that all camps are within a few miles of Sloper. We again
were concerned that Wappinger seems to get the regulations and the other Towns
even though they run similar programs don't seem to be bothered by the Health
Department. Mr. Reimer was asked to contact Peter Mack, of the Health Dept.
regarding this.
4. A tentative calendar of summer events was handed out. Most things
have already been scheduled i.e. reptile man, Turtle/Frog Show, Splashdown, etc.
The only things to be added are some inter-camp trips which are requested when
the Directors give in their lists.
5. The tennis schedule is in this weeks Southern Dutchess News along
with the dates for sign ups. The sign ups will be at Town HAll on April 26th
9 to 3, April 27th 2 to 4, and April 29th 9 - 12. An adult only session will
be held starting May 17th. A P. O. has been obtained for the purchase of the
tennis balls. Mrs. Korz will get the balls from Caldor.
BOAT RAMP
Miss Gutzler asked about getting the dock in at Chelsea and Mrs. Roe
noted that she had received several calls about this. Mr. Vorndran was
requested to clean up the ramp area and put the dock in as soon as he can.
ROBINSON LAN:E/ LITTLE LEAGUE
Mr. Miller made note that Little League Opening Day has been changed
to April 24th at 9:00 a.m. and that all are invited to attend. He also mentioned
that we still have to do some minor fence repairs and that the end caps on some
of the fences were missing. He felt that if we provided the caps that LIttle
League might be able to put them on if Mr. Vorndram and his crew couldn't get
to do it; He also mentioned that almost every night people are getting stuck

and are rUlnlng the grass. It was suggested that Mr. Vorndran see about taking
some poles out and designate parking. It was requested that the porta john be
delivered and that maybe for opening day we could get 2 (1 for by the telephone
pole by the girl's fields and the other for down by the storage trailer on the
back road). We also need to have the dumpster delivered - same size as last
year.
SOCCERjROCKINGHAM
Mr. Rider mentioned that Spring Season will open on April 18th. Mr.
Holt noted that the field is extremely wet and muddy. Mr. Rider said that there
are a couple of holes on the large field that need to be filled in. Mr. Vorndran
will look at this. He also mentioned that there is a lot of water behind the 1st
backstop and asked if it would be drained off. Mr. Vorndran thought that to do
it correctly, it would cost a lot of money but that they would go over and look at
it. Mr. Kennedy will be requested to bring us two locks to be placed at Rockigham,
1 on the trailer and one on the gate. It was our idea to let them be responsible
for opening and closing the park. During the winter Mr. Foster, Highway Superinten-
dent has been putting brush along the right side of the roadway. He will also
be dumping the sweepings from the Rockingham area at that site and in doing so
will enlarge the parking area.
VOLLEYBALL
Mr. Rider asked about getting the ropes to mark the courts at Montfort
Road volleyball courts. He said that he had looked into them last year at
Anaconda Kaye and they were approximately $40. a court. He was asked to check
into this again. He mentioned that he had been at a Park where the lights were
run by meter - coin operated. Most felt that this approach wouldn't work here.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt mentioned the following:
1. He met with Allan Stafford of Castle Point regarding our hooking into
their water line. They were more than happy to work with us to accomplish this.
They suggested that we dig the water line along their fence line and then over to
the pavilion. By doing this we won't have to dig through the landfill area. Mr.
Foster, Highway Superintendent, has agreed to dig the line for us and we will
probably put the line down approximately 4'. We will speak with a couple of
plumbers regarding the size of the pipe etc.
2. Castle POint again mentioned that they liked what we did by clearing
out the dead trees and scrub brush from the area across the road from the park
on the Town owned property. In clearing this area the view of the river has been
greatly enhanced. Castle Point mentioned that they gave the the Town permission
to clear their area in the same way. Mr. Holt mentioned that if we do this, we
will have to go to the Town Board for permission to do this work.

3. He has spoken with Bob Drennan of the Wappinger Men's Modified
league and told him that we would place some chalk dust in the truck body for
them. We will not line the fields but would provide the chalk for them. He was
also told that we will try and york rake the fields at least once a week and will
provide some clay to fill in the holes. They also discussed putting good clay
on the 2nd field. last year the league was going to help with this and to date
it hasn't been done. Mr. Drennan mentioned that they have approximately $800.
toward this project. We will still work on this.
Thursday.
4. Hopefully, we will get the paving done at Robinson lane this
5. We have the P.O. for the delivery of the stock pile of clay for
Robinson lane.
this week.
6. Mr. Vorndran will try and fertilize the fields at Robinson lane
7. Mr. Holt and Mrs. Delisa are scheduled to speak with Supervisor
Smith about the possibility of using Schlathaus for the Senior Citizen program
while the expansion work is being done at Town Hall. If we do move the program,
we would have to pump the septic and possibly have it done frequently while they
are there. We would have to get the stove fixed and the new refrigerator.
8. Airport Park right now is very muddy. After it dries out, we will
get in to turn it over, grade, seed and roll it. We will do only 1 field at a
time.
9. No new news regarding the White's Corners property.
10. Mr. Holt has heard that Mr. & Mrs. Mensching have met with Supervisor
Smith regarding the Eastern Regionals. He might hear more on this tomorrow when
he meets with Supervisor Smith.
11.The dedication of the War Memorial at Schlathaus Park is scheduled
for May 30th. There will be 2 - 60' tents, bands and a display of World War II
equipment. Our role will be to have the park fertilized and mowed. The New
Hackensack Fire Company has volunteered to "forever" provide the flag for the
monument. We now have a 5 x 8 flag there. They are planning on putting up a
6 x 9 one. We will also check the cord to make sure that it is okay.
12. Mr. Rompala is back working with maintenance. Mr. Broadie is
coming back soon and Steve Miller will be here on May 10th. We haven't heard
from Ethan Meybohm. Mr. Holt will contact Mr. Meybohm regarding this.
13. In the garage at Schlathaus we have a 1975 Ford tractor which
we haven't been using because it needs constant repair. Pine Plains Ford Tractor
has spoken with Mr. Vorndran about making a deal for the tractor. They would
like to obtain the tractor for display purposes and in return we would get a
vacuum for grass and leaves at an approximate value of $4,000. We will look
further into this and go to the Town Board for permission to effect the trade.
Mrs. Roe was requested to look up the purchase price on the mower.

APRIL 1993
April sneaked in under the snow or through the snow or
something. I sure do hope it brings some sunsh~ne and
leaves the snow behind. No April Fool's snow, p)ease Ms.
April! .
Our Easter luncheon will be at Mamma Marisa's on Friday,
April 2nd from noon to 3:00. The Center will be closed.
Get ready for the Second Annual Easter Egg Hunt! The
Easter Bunny will be hiding eggs on Wed. April 7th. There
will be lots of prizes. Also, anyone wearing a hand
decorated Easter Hat can enter the Easter Bonnet contest.
Prizes for the best, silliest, prettiest. So don't be shy!
We may even have an Easter parade. You know "In your Easter
Bonnet, with all the frills upon it." Hurry! Get out those
frills! There isn't much time to get ready for this
exciting Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Bonnet Parade!! Don't
miss the fun!
I want to thank all of you for the wonderful surprise
birthday party you gave me. I certainly did not expect it!
This was my BIG one, and you made it a very special for me.
Thank you all for thinking of me and for your very generous
gift.
Remember there is now a "Complaint Jar" on my desk. There
is a charge of 250 per complaint, 500 per BIG complaint.
Proceeds from this "Complaint Jar" will be donated towards
our Center expansion and/or a new refrigerator and other new
fixtures needed for the Center. Regina, Sue and I will be
happy to hear any complaint, just drop in your quarters and
we will happily listen. We may even give you a smile! Now
you can laugh or groan or even complain about this (just
drop in your quarter first), but just remember proceeds go
for a good cause, so take this in the spirit in which it is
intended. However, serious complaints WILL be considered
and acted upon if possible. And any other donation for this
good cause will be graciously accepted!
If anyone has other suggestions we can use to raise extra
.
monies to be donated for the Center expansion, please let me
know. Connie Smith has worked very hard to get this
expansion. Monies are tight. So anything we can do such as
a bake sale or raffle to raise a few dollars will certainly
be appreciated. Let's pull together and do it!! Expansion
will be started very soon!
Now to other April activities. Diana Weibrecht will be
at the Town Hall on April 8. Let me know if you want to see
her so I can set up a time with her Also, on April 8,
Brownie Troop #440 will visit us. They want to speak to all
of you about the way things were when you were their age.
For example, what kind of games did you play? What kind of
dolls did you have? Where did certain buildings/streets get
their names? They will be able to earn a badge by doing
this. So let's enjoy these Brownies and their "Listening to
the Past" program.
On April 14, Bob English, a retired Wappinger resident
and photographer, will be at the Center to show his photos
and discuss starting a Photo Club. He will share his
knowledge of cameras and photography. He suggested that a
small group may wish to go out to parks or other interesting
sights to take photos. If anyone is interested, let me
know. It could be an interesting hobby for many of you.
The Club will give you the opportunity to learn to use a
camera, develop your own film and much more.
Anyone interested in joining a Senior bowling league, let
me know or call Jack at Holiday Hoebowl. We are also
putting together a swim program. There will be a charge of
approximately $6.00 per session for 6 sessions. If you are
interested, please let me know as soon as possible. Anyone
interested in a day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art? The
day will include the bus, a visit to the museum, an
explanation of the paintings and other artworks plus lunch
at a Manhattan restaurant. The cost will be approximately
$29.00. If interested, please let me know. If there is
enough interest, we will schedule this in the near future.
For those paying dues by the month, April dues is $2.00.
Have a Happy and Healthy Easter. A big hug to all of
you!!!! !
