NEXT MEETING NOVEMBER 9, 1993
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission
was held October 12, 1993 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of
Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J. Holt.
Others present were Recreation Director Bernie Reimer, Senior Citizen Director
Kathi DeLisa, Commission Members Ellen Korz, Barbara Gutzler and Stephen Miller.
The minutes of the September 13, 1993 meeting were approved on a motion
by Miss Gutzler seconded by Mrs. Korz with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from William M. Peters, a resident of Chelsea
who often fishes in the Wappinger Creek in the Qui~t Acres Park. He was concerned
with the littering and destruction. He mentioned that behind the backstop by the
stream, there are numerous beer cans, broken bottles and camp fires. He also stated
~ there was a sign at the entrance to the Park stating that No Alcohol, No Firearms,
No Littering and No Hunting were Allowed but that no one seems to enforce these
rules. It was suggested that a letter be written to Mr. Peters with the number
of the Sheriff's Dept. Miss Gutzler also suggested that a letter be written to
Supervisor Smith requesting the Patrol to stop and go into the Park.
Approvals have been received from Myers Corners School for a rain site
for the Halloween Party on Sunday, October 24th. Approval was also given for the
Boys and Girls Gymnastic program to be held Saturdays starting January 8th until
Apri~ 22, 1994 and the Adult Volleyball program held Tuesday nights October 12th
until March 24, 1994.
A letter was received from Miracle Recreation regarding "Burns Injuries
on Solid Steel Decks". They requested that we contact them immediately to receive
astro turf deck coverings. We will check on this to see if this applies to us.
OUTGOING LETTERS
1. Letter to Robert Drennan - receipt and thanks for check for $700. toward cost
of clay for Castle Point.
2. Letter to Town Board Members Re: Robert Weber and Regina Waldron
3. Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. George Brannen for donation of books to the center.

use Town recreation facilities. (This was put on hold for a Town Workshop.)
5. Letter to Town Board regarding the proposed Ice Skating facility.

8. Request for P.O. for Custodial Services at Myers School for the Girls and
Boys Gymnastic program from Jan to April 1993.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. OeLisa handed out a report on the Senior activities for the month
of September. This report is attached to these minutes. She also mentioned that
she had sent a "Thank You" to the newspaper Thanking Doug McHoul, Office of the
Aging and Connie Smith for the Senior Citizen Picnic held at Schlathaus on
September 28th.
RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer reported that everything is settled with the schools although
we lost one night of volleyball because we couldn't get the Jr. High for the night
requested. The programs scheduled are as follows:
1. Volleyball - Myers School-Tuesdays starting 10/12 at 6:30 p.m.
2. Basketball - Wappinger Jr. High - Wednesdays starting 10/13 at 6:30 p.m.
3. Aerobics - Sheafe Road School Tuesdays and Thursdays Starting 10/14 at 6:30 p.m.
It was noted that Gina Poulious would not be doing the aerobics for us
this 'year. She has decided to retire after many years - it was thought 6 - 8 years.
Mrs. Roe was requested to check on the actual time she worked for us and it was
decided that we would get something for her. We have hired Lisa Casowitz who has
come highly recommended and who works at Figures and Fitness.
Mr. Reimer mentioned that he spoke with Jerry Husted through his
secretary Janet Versace and was assured that we didn't get the additional date for
volleyball at the Jr. High because the application was late. We still felt that
because we have held this program there for so many years that they could have
had the courtesy to call us to see if we were scheduling the program again this
year. Mr. Holt will write a letter to Michael DeFillippo.
Mr. Reimer mentioned that he has put in a request for the West POint
Band for 1994 --the Concert Band for March and the Jazz Band for July. He
hasn't put in the request for Ketcham yet but Mr. Miller suggested that he do
this immediately since we can always withdraw it.
The Schlathaus Race was held on October 2, 1993 and had a good turn
out. The Town provides the trophies and pumpkins for prizes.

HALLOWEEN PARTY
Miss Gutzler mentioned that the Haunted House has been taken care of.
She has purchased all the decorations and will keep them after that day. It was
decided that the OPen House be held at 1:00 with entertainment "Let Us Entertain
You" beginning at 2:00 followed by judging and ,refreshments.
Mr. Rider will be asked to set up the sound system.
If it is raining or too cold, we will move the party to the Myers
Corners School.
Mrs. Korz mentioned that she has the following to donate ~rizes:
1. McDonalds - is set with Grimace & pumpkins for 150 children
2. Wendy's will give whatever their pr.mmotion is at that time.
3. Pizza Hut will give coupons for a free personal pan pizza
4. Ben & Jerry's will give coupons for a free cone
5. Dunkin Donuts are giving donuts
6. Parties Plus a certificate
7. Fun Central has given 40 tokens. (Mrs. Korz mentioned that they
have requested that this be the top prize. She will check on the
value of the tokens.)
8. Hoe Bowl will give coupons.
Meadowbrook has been contacted about cornstalks and pumpkins. The
stalks will be brought back after that day. The cider, apples pnd 15 dozen donuts
have.been ordered.~ We will 898in register the children and give out numbers. The
judges will be Sylvia Holt, Connie Smith and Elaine Snowden.
ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Miller reported that they are still playing at Robinson Lane and
will probably end around October 25th.
BOAT RAMP
Mr. Ennesser, although unable to attend, sent a report in which he
thanked the maintenance crew for fixing the railing on the dock. He also requested
that the dock be checked more frequently because the abnormal tides and rain have
created more floating accumulation of debris.
He spoke with Don White (White's,Marina) about a couple of docks in
the Spring. He said he might be able to help by giving us finger docks that he
is replacing. He will follow up on this during the winter months.
Recreation Minutes
Page 4
October 12, 1993
Mr. Ennesser has called the Rectech Dock Co. to get rough estimates
on new docks as follows:
13 each approx. 60' of Super Dock and floats
5 piling brackets
15 multiple deck connections
1 gangway hinge assembly
3 railing brackets and 15 ft. of railing
Estimate approximately 5 - 6K
MID HUDSON ROAD RUNNERS RACE
Mr. Ennesser worked with Ken Hack, Race Director, and after trying
with no success to get someone from Little League ~o be available the day of the
race, he ran 3 line cords from 3 different circuits in the store to satisfy the
electrical request.
He also instructed the Club to drive cars down between R-1 and R-2
and then along 3rd base fence line on Memorial Field to utilize the lower parking
areas. This seemed to work well.
Several signs were displaced at the Park entrance to allow for an
emergency path. One was missing and the others were replaced.
Mr. Ennesser asked Mr Hack to give us more notice i~ the future for
additional power for his P.C. and any other requests he might have.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt reported that Airport Park was 85-90% finished. We have
harrowed, power raked and seeded it. The maintenance guys did a super job. So
far the cost to the Town was approximately $4,000..
Mr. Kennedy mentioned that he has requested the $3,500. from the Town
and that they are ready to turn it over to us for their part of the fencing.
Now that the area has been cleared and seeded, we don't want anyone using it for
their motorcycles and motorbikes. We will have to look in our budget for funds
for the balance of the fencing and if necessary ask for Parkland Funds.
We have received permission from the Town Board to expend $6,000. toward
the construction of the pole building at Montfort Road. We have received P.O.'s
and have already dug the 16 holes and poured the cement. Hopefully next week
we will get the skeleton of the building up.
White's Corners Property negotiations are not moving to quickly.

October 12, 1993
The Town's Christmas Party is set for Oecember 5th at Schlathaus Park.
Gifts have been ordered. We are still looking for some entertainment. Mr.
Ennesser and Mrs. Delisa gave suggestions to Mr. Reimer and he will follow up.
Mrs. Roe will check on another lead.
The painting at Martz Field and Spook, Hill has been completed - inside
and out. The roof at the Spook Hill building has also been repaired:
There was a discussion on the clay for Martz Field. We have to wait
to see what our funds are like when the building is completed. There was a
concern about which type of clay should be put down - the good red clay or the
regular. Mr. Miller was concerned about the good red clay because it has to be
worked regularly or it gets hard. This was tabled for the next meeting.
A discussion took place regarding the purchase of playground equipment
for toddlers for Martz Field. Two pictures were ppesented from two different
companies - Raymond Michael ltd. and Miracle Recreation. It was suggested that
if we could get 2 pieces from Raymond Michaels for $3,000. we get 1 for Martz and
1 for Robinson lane. Motion by Miss Gutzler seconded by Mr. Miller. Mrs. Roe will
check on prices, delivery and installation.
Mr. Holt asked Mr. Reimer to see if he could obtain a gym so that we
could hold a pitching clinic. He would direct it with the help of Mr. Miller and
Mr. Ennesser. Hopefully, on Tuesday and Thursday nights with 1 session of 10
boys ages 9 - 12 and then another session of 10 boys ages 13 - 15. Mr. Miller
suggested that the gyms might be more available late February early March and it
would be just before the ball season starts. Mr. Reimer will +ook into this.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:Q5 on a motion by Mr. Miller seconded
by Miss Gutzler.

OCTOBER 1993 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 1993
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
September activities at the Senior Citizen Center
included the regular schedule of art/crats, exercise, line
dancing, videos, cards and games. The Center was closed
Labor Day, Sept. 6. Oil painting classes were cancelled for
the month.
The Office of the Aging in cooperation with the Town
sponsored a picnic at Schlathaus Park for the town's seniors
on Sept. 28. It was a beautiful day for over 250 seniors
who attended this event. Delicious food and delightful
music provided by Bill Paroli. Doug McHoul has offered his
huge grill and volunteer staff for our summer picnics.
There would be a slight charge per person. I will pursue
this in the spring.
This was the only picnic/party of the month except for
our monthly birthday party on the 30th. The seniors put
aside the partying and buckled down to finish all the craft
projects for our craft fair in Oct. Diana Weibrecht from
the Office of the Aging was at the Center on the 9th. The
Heart Assoc. provided blood pressure screening on the 21st.
The Town sponsored trip to Pomona on the 14th was a great
success.
The seniors are adjusting to their temporary home.
However, attendance is down. Many seniors go to exercise at
Town Hall three days a week but do not come to Schlathaus
after. The men are enjoying the pool table and are
requesting it to be moved to Town Hall when it is completed.
There was an average of 20 seniors per day at the Center.
There are 184 seniors registered at the Center and 100
seniors on the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. Elks Club Christmas Party Update: Response is moderate.
We still need funds to purchase gifts for the seniors. I
have contacted the owner of the Liquor Exchange in regard to
small bottles of wine or raffle prizes. He will speak to
the salesmen and ask them to help us. Will let me know
soon. We need a Santa Claus for that date. More next
month!
2 There are two interns from Dutchess Community College
working as volunteers at the Center this semester. Loretta
Mygan is in on Thursday from 9:30-1:30 and Karen Barone is
in on Friday from 9:30-1:30. They will be bringing in
different activities for the seniors, will help both Regina
and Sue when needed and will help me at times. Their goal
is to experience a senior oitizen activity center, its
function, purpose, how it is organized and operated.
3. The trip to Duck Cedar Inn is soheduled for Oot. 12.
4. Our annual craft fair will be held TWO days this year,
Oct. 14 & 15 from 10-2:00. There will be crafts for sale, a
book sale, bake sale, Granny's Attic, ooffee and donuts and
raffles.
5.0ther October activities: Blood pressure screening on the
19th, a flu clinio at Town Hall on the 20th, birthday party
on the 28th and our annual Halloween party on the 29th. All
must come in costume to participate in the goodies. I need
2-3 judges. Volunteers? Please?

OCTOBER 1993
The frost is on the pumpkins and the leaves are turning
bright reds and yellows. It must be CRAFT FAIR TIME! Some
changes this year! For the first time ever our Fair will be
held two days, Oct. 14 & Oct 15 from 10:00-2:00. Because of
the renovations at Town Hall, the Fair will be held at
Schlathaus. We will NOT be serving luncp this year.
If the weather permits, we can even put a table or two of
crafts outside to help attract attention. Anne Peters will
once again be selling raffle tickets for the big raffle.
Raffle prizes will include 2 handmade afghans, a hand
crocheted lace table topper, a handmade shawl and a hand
decorated wreath. Tickets are $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. We are
asking EACH of you to take at least six raffle tickets.
<$5.00 worth.) You can buy them for yourself or sell them
to friends and family. If each person helps, it will ensure
a successful raffle. REMEMBER. PROCEEDS OF THE RAFFLE AND
THE CRAFT FAIR GO TOWARDS LUNCHEONS AND PARTIES. IF YOU
ENJOY THESE EXTRAS. PLEASE DO YOUR PART!!! See'Anne or me
for raffle tickets. In the meantime, tell everyone you know
to come to our wonderful Craft Fair. We will have our Book
Sale, Granny's Attic, Bake Sale, Raffles and of course
Crafts.
We will need homemade baked goods for our bake sale.
Please let me know what you will bake for the sale. Since
the Fair is for two days, please let me know which day you
are bringing your baked goods or if you can bring something
both days. Wow! That would be Super!
If you have items for Granny's Attic, you can bring them
in beginning Mon. Oct. 4. Please make sure items are in
good condition, working order and clean. Do NOT bring
clothing. Books for our book sale are also welcome. Bring
them in anytime.
Once again, remember proceeds of the Fair and raffle go
for our luncheons and parties. Please, buy and/or sell your
raffle tickets, bake something for our bake sale. We need
,;
'I
YOUR help to make this successful. 'Please do your share so
we can make ..,this our biggest and best craft fair ever!!
Thank you for your cooperation.
Some other important happenings! The Center is closed on
the 11th for Columbus Day. Diana from the Office of the
Aging will be at Schlathous on the 14th even though we will
be having our Craft Fair. Blood pressure screening is on
the 19th. PLEASE NOTE: ON THE 20th: THERE IS A FLU CLINIC
AT TOWN HALL FROM 10-NOON. The cost is $10.00. My
understanding is Medicare will cover most of this cost..
For those of you who exercise and line dance at Town
Hall, you are welcome to Schlathaus to join us in
arts/crafts, videos, coffee and cookies, and other
activities after exercise classes. And don't forget to come
to our CRAFT FAIR!!! .. .
THERE'S MORE!! It's time for the ghosts and goblins, the
witches and wild imaginings. On the 29th we will have our
annual Halloween Costume Party. There will be cider and
donuts and food and prizes and maybe even a game or two.
You must be in costume to participate in all the goodies.
So come one! Come all dressed in your gowns and let's have a
ball! Don't be shy! Your costume may catch the judge's
eye!
We have two students from Dutchess Community College,
Karen Barone and Loretta Mygan. They will be helping
Regina, Sue and myself and will also be bringing you new
activities. They need your help to make their internship
work. So let's see what we can do to make their stay with
us successful.
Anne Peters has volunteered to be our "Sunshine Person."
So if you know of someone who is ill or someone who has
moved out of our Center, let Anne know and she will send an
appropriate card. Thank you Anne!!!!
AND MORE! Thanksgiving is just a month away. For our
luncheon, we will be going to Mama Marisa's on Nov. 19.
More on this next month. Remember, you must be current with
your dues to get the reduced cost. If you are a new member,
you must have been a member for six months AND current with
your dues. Of course any member may attend the luncheon,
however, unless these conditions are met, the cost will be
full price. REMEMBER: BUY YOUR RAFFLE TICKETS AND SUPPORT
OUR CRAFT FAIR!! THIS HELPS US TO MAINTAIN LOW COST
LUNCHEONS!! (Christmas festivities are just around the
corner. Santa has some fun surprises!)
For those paying dues by the month, October dues is
$2.00. Don't forget the COMPLAINT JAR! DROP YOUR QUARTERS
IN! A big hug to all of you!!!!!
