RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES
NOVEMBER 9, 1993 MEETING
NEXT MEETING DECEMBER 14, 1993
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission
was held on November 9, 1993 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of
Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J.
Holt. Others present were Senior Citizen Director, Kathi DeLisa, Recreation
Director Bernie Reimer, Commission Members Joseph Ennesser, Ronald Friedman,
Barbara Gutzler, Ellen Korz, Donald Rider and Maintenance Supervisor John Vorndran.
The minutes of the October 12, 1993 meeting were approved on a
motion by Mr. Ennesser seconded by Mrs. Korz with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from the Red Oaks Mill 4gers Pop Warner
football team requesting assistance in providing bus transportation to a "bowl
game". The bus transportation costs are $500. (one bus). After a discussion
and notation of the fact that we will have $500. left in our account A-7140.4
budget line a vote was taken on whffifer this should be approved. Some members
questioned about how many of these participants were from Wappinger. The vote
was approved 3 to 2 that a letter be sent to the Town Board requesting that the
$500. be approved for the transportation.
Two proposals for fencing work at Airport Park were received.
The proposal from A-1 Fence was for $4,885.00 and the second from All American
Fence was for $5,857.00. After reviewing both estimates, it was thought that
they seemed comparable but Mr. Vorndran was asked to check them further. If
they are the same, it was suggested we go with the bid from A-1 and that a
letter be written to the Town Board requesting approval for a P.O. The funds
are in A-7110.2 for the Town portion of the fencing and the Wappinger Soccer
League has said that they would contribute $3,000. toward the project.
We received a letter from Denise Schirmer to set up a Babysitting
Certification program which would be in conjunction with the American Red Cross.
The charge for such a program would be $10.00 per student for supplies and $25.
per hour for the instructor. Since the New Hackensack Fire District runs such
a program for our area, we did not want to duplicate the program.
We received a copy of the Pop Warner Contract with a letter stating
that the $1,700. in funds provided by the Town would be applied toward the purchase
of 26 helmets at an average cost of $65.38 each. It was noted that they did the
same last year which indicates a constant rollover.

A Park Professional Survey was received from the N.Y. S. Parks
Recreation and Historic Preservation. Each member was asked to review and answer
the survey questions and get them back to Mrs. Roe as soon as possible.
Richard Rose, Recreation Director of the Town of Poughkeepsie
sent to us two flyers on programs which he felt would be of interest to us.
One was on Playground Safety which will be held in Poughkeepsie on February 3, 1994
The other a H.V.l.S.A. Vendor's luncheon on January 26th in Suffern, N.Y. It was
thought that the safety program would be something we should look into. It was
suggested that we find out what the deadline for registration is.
A notice was received from Myers Corners School regarding
additional policy procedures for organizations using their facilities. This policy
will be placed on file.
A request was received from Carolyn Torella of the American Heart
Association to use the Robinson Lane facility on Saturday, May 7th for a "Heart
Ride". She said that they are using routes used by the Mid Hudson Road Runners
Club and that they expect 150 riders plus volunteers to be there. They would need
the pavilion to serve refreshments etc. Since that is in the middle of the little
league season and most fields would be in use, it was suggested that she hold this
either before or after little league season or we could give her the use of the
Castle Point site. Mrs. Roe will contact her regarding this.
Information was received from Jeanne B. Stupplebeen regarding
the "Fun In the Park 1994".
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. Delisa handed out a report on the senior activities for the
month of October 1993. This report is attached to these minutes. She also mentioned
that she has had problems with the alarm system at Schlathaus. She said that she
would set the alarm when leaving at night and when she came in in the morning it
was not on. She has checked with the maintenance people to see if they had been in
but they hadn't. It was suggested that we have the alarm company in and if they
find nothing have the 4 digit code changed.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer reported that he is happy with the Fall programs.
Volleyball o.n Tuesday is picking up. Basketball at the Wappinger Jr. High has
a good mix of people - not the same as last year. Aerobics with the new
instructor liza Casowitz at Sheafe Road School is going well.

A tentative date of April 15th at 7:30-8:00 has been set for
the West Point Band. We may not have to feed them this year since they are cutting
back on food W'm Cdncerts. are held close to West Point. More information on that at
a later date. The cafeteria, auditorium, band room and changing rooms have been
reserved at Ketcham for this concert. The performance by the Jazz Band is still
on hold as they don't like to have 2 bands at the same place the same year. If
they are not booked, they might consider coming.
Entertainment for the Christmas party is set through Turtle
Frog Music. Ann Micelli Teed will be there to lead a sing-a -long. Song sheets
have been sent to be copied. The cost for the entertainment is $300.00.
A letter will be sent out next week to all people who signed
up for the Radio City Music Hall Trip as a reminder. They will also be notified
that the tickets will be given out on the bus the day of the trip. Any questions
or cancellations are to be made to the Recreation Office 297-0720.
Colleen Cannon, Director of Deer Hill has notified Mr. Reimer
that the Center is available if we should need it.
ROBINSON LANE/LITTLE LEAGUE
Mr. Friedman noted that we pay $20. a month for the telephone
at Robinson Lane and he felt we could save some money if we suspended the service
for the winter reinstating it in March. Mrs. Roe will check on this.
Mr. Holt mentioned that on Sunday he received a call from a
group trying to get in Robinson Lane for an Awards Day for the Fall Program. He
did not have a key and was unable to reach Mr. Vorndran or Mr. Miller. Luckily
Lucy Doroni was able to open the gate. Mr. Holt emphasized that we must be made
aware of such events ahead of time.
HALLOWEEN PARTY
Everyone thanked Mrs. Korz for the excellent Party. Every-
thliflg\\went: :Ismooith\ly. Mrs. KOrz mentioned that thank you letters have been sent
to everyone who donated to the party. The haunted house, set up by Karen Swanson,
Barbara Gutzler, Ellen Korz and Kathi DeLisa, was excellent although it was a lot
of work for one hour. More thought will be given to this for next year.

NOVEMBER 1993 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 1993
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
October activities at the Senior Citizen Center included
the regular schedule of artsl crafts, exercise, line
dancing, videos, cards and games. The Center was closed
Columbus Day, Oct. 11.
The Seniors held their annual craft fair Oct. 14 & Oct.
15 at Schlathaus. This was the first year the craft fair
was held for two days. There was a good turn out and the
"fair" was a great success. There were 7 raffle prizes, a
bake sale, book sale, Granny's Attic and of course crafts.
On the 29th, the seniors had a Halloween Costume Party.
Almost everyone came in costume. Connie Smith, Bill
Bitterlich and Sylvia Holt generously donated their time to
come be judges for the costumes. There were five winners in
the Costume Contest. There were treats for everyone:
McDonald's "buckets" filled with candy and apples and
coupons for free french fries at McD's. We had donuts and
cider and for lunch, hot dogs and an assortment of hors
d'ouerves and of course dessert. Santa even came to join
the party and give everyone a "pre-Chriltmas" treat. It was
a fun day for all.
Diana Weibrecht from the Office of the Aging was at the
Center on the 14th, blood pressure screening was provided on
the 19th by the Heart Assoc. The Dutchess Co. Health Dept.
held a flu clinic at the Town Hall on the 20th. The New
Hamburg Fire Dept. and Mark Lieberman, our Fire Inspector
were at the Center on the 22nd to provide a fire prevention
program for the seniors. Our monthly birthday party was
held on the 28th.
The trip to the Duck Cedar Inn on the 12th was very
successful. Many would like to go there again next year.
Peg and I will be working on possible trips in the coming
weeks.
The two interns from Dutchess Community College are doing
an excellent job. They both have come in each week with a
game or a simple project to do with the seniors. For
example: Loretta brought in pumpkins and helped the seniors
paint faces on them. Karen has brought a variety of word
games and trivia games for the seniors. Karen also
organized the fire prevention program on the 22nd. Their
teacher will be at the Center to observe them sometime
during the school semester.
There was an average of 21 seniors per day at the Center.
There are 184 seniors registered at the Center and 110
seniors on the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. One of the seniors, Dominick Tammaro cut his finger on a
rough edge of the pool table on Oct. 25. After
administering first aid, I took him to Vassar Hospital where
he had eight stitches. I have taped the edges on the table
to avoid any future injury.
2. Joan Morrison from the Lions Club called and asked for
suggestions for a service project for the Senior Center.
They will discuss providing a service for the Center at
their next meeting and hope to provide a service or
something in January or February for the Center.
3. Elks Club Christmas Party Update: Final arrangements
with the Elks Club are made. Reservations will be taken on
Nov. 15 on a first come/first serve basis. Final
arrangements for "Santa's Gifts" are not complete but will
be in the next few days. We have more raffle prizes this
year. A Girl Scout troop is making centerpieces for the
tables. Everything is coming together. A final report next
month.
4. November activities will include a Thanksgiving luncheon
at Mamma Marisa's on the 19th and a Bingo Day at the
Fishkill Senior Center on the 23rd.
5. In December the seniors will have their Christmas
luncheon at Villa Borghese on Dec. 3. And of course the
Elks Club dinner on Dec. 7th.

By Kathi DeLisa, Director
NOVEMBER 1993
CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU DID IT!!! You made this our best
Craft Fair! Thank you all for your help, your baked goods,
donated items, your support and everything! Many of you
worked at the tables during the craft fair and I thank all
of you. A big special thank you to our "Raffle Lady," Anne
Peters. We broke all records on raffle sales this year. So
thank you Anne and thank all of you who bought and sold
raffle tickets. And a big thank you to Regina, Sue and Lori
for all their help in preparing for the Craft Fair. Now
after all that hard work. ...IT'S TIME TO PARTY!!! ARE YOU
READY?
First let me mention, there are several days the Center
will be closed this month: Election Day, Nov. 2 (Don't
forget to Vote), Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, Thanksgiving and
the day after, Nov. 25 and 26. Now onto the fun things.
We will be going to Mamma Marisa's on Fri. Nov. 19 at
Noon for our Thanksgiving luncheon. The menu includes soup,
hors d'oeurves, entree, dessert and coffee or tea. Entree
choices are: Lasagna, Chicken Parmigiana or Broiled Filet of
,
Sole with Broccoli or Pasta. The cost for the luncheon is
$7.50. Remember, you must be current with your dues to get
this reduced cost. If you are a new member, you must have
been a member for six months AND current with your dues. Of
course any member may attend the luncheon, however, unless
these conditions are met, the cost will be full price. You
must sign up and pay for this luncheon by November 12.
Umberto, owner of Mamma Marisa's has planned a very nice day
for all of us. I am sure you will enjoy it.
Next! Our Christmas luncheon will once again be held at
Villa Borghese. Date: Friday, Dec. 3 at Noon! The menu
will include, minestrone soup, salad, entree, dessert and
coffee or tea. Choice of entrees: Shell steak with
mushroom caps or Broiled stuffed Filet of Sole. The cost
for this luncheon will be $3.00 (same conditions as the
Thanksgiving luncheon.) You must sign up and pay for this
. .
.
luncheon by Tuesday Nov. 23. There will be no refunds after
this date!!
Some other important happenings! We have been invited to
join the Fishkill Seniors for a Bingo Day at the Fishkill
Senior Center on Tues. Nov. 23. at 10:30 a.m. Bingo cards
will be $1.00 each. There will be prizes and door prizes.
If you wish to attend, you must sign up with me by Nov. 18.
We all had fun last time and I am sure we will enjoy our day
playing bingo with the Fishkill seniors. Go directly to the
Fishkill Center, our Center will be closed.
Our birthday party will be on Wed., Nov. 17. We need
birthday cakes, please let me know if you will bring one.
Beginning next year (1994) there will be a change in the
birthday party procedure. It ha~ been suggested that those
who have a birthday in the month should bring the cake.
This will eliminate the same people always getting "stuck"
bringing the birthday cakes. More on this later.
Blood pressure screening is on the 16th, Diana from the
Office of the Aging will be at Schlathous on the 18th. For
those of you who exercise and line dance at Town Hall, you
are welcome to Schlathaus to join us in arts/crafts, videos,
coffee and cookies, and other activities after exercise
classes.
We have two students from Dutchess Community College,
Karen Barone and Loretta Mygan. They will be helping
Regina, Sue and myself and will also be bringing you new
activities. They need your help to make their internship
work. So let's see what we can do to make their stay with
us successful.
,
Expansion update! Construction is moving along. It is
our hope that we will be back at Town Hall sometime in
December. Of course we do not know when but I will let you
know as soon as I know. Boy, that wasn't much of an update
was it?
For those paying dues by the month, November dues is
$2.50. Don't forget the COMPLAINT JAR! DROP YOUR QUARTERS
IN!
A very Happy Thanksgiving and a big hug to all of
you!!!! !
