RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES
OECEMBER 14, 1993
NEXT MEETING JANUARY 11, 1994
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was
held December 14, 1993 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger,
Dutchess County,New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J. Holt.
Others present were Senior Citizen Director Kathi DeLisa, Recreation Director
Bernie Reimer, Commission Members Ronald Friesman,' Joseph Ennesser, Ellen Korz,
and Stephen Miller. Henry Provost, President of the Town of Wappinger Little
League was also in attendance.
The minutes of the November 9, 1993 meeting were approved on a motion
by Mr. Miller seconded by Mr. Ennesser with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A copy of a letter addressed to Supervisor Smith from the Dutchess
County Youth Bureau was forwarded to us for our information. This letter was
in regard to the approval of the 1994 Youth Development/Delinquency Program funds
in the amount of $6,987.
A letter was received from Lt. Colonel Erank G. Dubuy of West POint
confirming our request for a performance of the West Point Band on April 15, 1994.
The concert is scheduled to be held at Roy C. Ketcham High School. Mr. Reimer
has already made all necessary arrangements with the school. We still have to
determine whether we will be providing a meal for the band. That will be answered
at a later date - closer to concert time.
A letter was received from the Wappinger Jr. High to cancel our
December 8th and January 26th program at the school due to school functions on
those dates.
A second letter was received from Jerry Husted, of the Wappinger Jr.
High stating that the Physical Education teachers were scheduling their gymnastics
program during the month of March. Therefore, it is necessary to cancel the
use of the gym during that month to all outside organizations. Mr. Reimer and
Mr. Holt suggested going to the school to discuss this with Mr. Husted and maybe
we could use half a gym. A suggestion was also brought up to check into using
Grand Slam facilities for that month. Mr. Reimer was asked to check out the
cost for it's use. If it is too much we will forget it.
A letter was received from Jim Hinek, Babe Ruth Coordinator for Eastern
New York State. This letter was given to Henry Provost, Pres. of Little League.
Mr. Miller noted that since we are part of the Little League Organization, he
didn't think the Board would want to play Babe Ruth Baseball.

A letter was received from The Bank of New York stating that they were
unable to support our 1993 Christmas Party for Seniors.
A letter was received from the Wappingers Falls Rotary Club stating
that they were unable to support our request for help for our Senior Christmas
Party at the Elks Club.
Mr. Holt mentioned that the party was a great success and thanked Mrs.
DeLisa and Mrs. Roe for all their work. He said that he went to the Fishkill
Senior's party and felt that ours was better if only that we had real turkey and
potatoes and they served turkey roll and instant potatoes. He also noted that
they get a lot of support from their service organizations.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the Senior Citizen activities for
the month of November. The report is attached to these minutes.
She also mentioned that Chase has a grant to apply for in January which
is not for a capital improvement. If anyone has any ideas, please let her know.
The windows have been installed in the new center addition and we have been getting
quotes for the blinds. We have also been asked by Supervisor Smith to get prices
on refrigerators.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer has started to put together the year end report.
Two programs for boys and girls ages 7 - 12 will start in January. The
basketball program will be run again by Scott Silverstein and as he did for the
summer program he will divide the children into 2 groups ages 7 - 9 and 10 - 12.
He finds that this provides a much better program. The starting date for this
will be January 15th.
The gymnastic program is scheduled for the Myers Corners School. Art
Goldner and Brenda Peura have agreed to run this program which will start on
January 8th.
Mr. Reimer asked Mr. Holt about the Radio City Music Hall show and was
told that it was a super day. The show was great and the time in the City to
see the decorations etc was enough. Mr. Reimer asked whether we should stick with
a weekday if we do this again next year or go on a weekend which would be more
expensive. It was decided to do the same as this year.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt reported that Mr. Humeston was out to Airport Park today to
put in the swale down the left side of the Park. He also mentioned that soccer
brought in their check for $3,000. to put toward the cost of the new fence that
A-l Fence Company will be installing.
Two Community Development grants were filled out today. The first was
for rest rooms at Castle POint and well for $53,000. and the second for fencing
work at 1. Airport Park, 2. to enclose the Barn, and 3. to enclose the kiddie
equipment at Martz Field.
The Christmas Party attendance was down from last year with approximately
250 attending. A lot was due to the weather related cancellation the previous week.
The new building at the barn is up and looks good. We have received 2
estimates for doors for the building. We will be going to the Town Board to
request a P.O. to install them. We have the money in our A-7110.4 account with
which we were going to do the Spook Hill blacktop which we were unable to do
because of weather.
A discussion took place regarding the returning of the Heritage Grant
because we have not received the lease on the beachfront property at Chelsea. It
was suggested we send a letter to see if we ~ancarry it over until 1994. Mr.
Frideman asked if this grant was based on a fiscal year or a calendar year.
We will check on this.

Mr. Holt mentioned that the Town Board had a problem with us charging
a $500. up front fee for large groups to use our facilities. The Town Board
has asked us to supply them with actual costs to clean up/fix up the areas after
these functions. He. Holt said that he would speak with Mr. Vorndran further
regarding this.
This has been a busy year and we have accomplished a lot. Thanks to
everyone for all their support.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 on a motion by Mr. Friedman seconded
by Mr. Miller.

By Kathi DeLisa, Director
DECEMBER 1993
We are starting this month off with a bang!. Friday,. Dec.
3rd at Noon, we will kick off the holiday season with our
Christmas luncheon at Villa Borghese. Reservations for this
were due no later than Nov. 23rd. By the look of the list,
I think all who want to go signed up. So get on your bells
and bows and get ready for a special time.
Just a few days later, on Tues., Dec. 7 there will be a
Christmas dinner sponsored by The Town of Wappinger
Recreation in conjunction with the Wapp~nger's Elks Lodge
and supported through donations given by local businesses
and professionals for Wappinger Seniors. You must have your
reservation and ticket to attend this function. Each person
will be given a name tag before you enter the dining room.
(Then everyone will know who you are! Personally, I need
one in case I forget who I am!) There will be good food,
entertainment and a good time for all. PLEASE NOTE: DOORS
WILL NOT OPEN UNTIL 12:30!
Myers Corners Elementary School PTA has invited Wappinger
Seniors to a Holiday Breakfast on Wed., Dec. 15 at 8:00 a.m.
You must sign up with me no later than Nov. 29. if YOU would
like to attend. We will be served by the 5th Grade students
and entertained with some songs and music. So let's support
their generous offer. It is certainly a nice way to begin a
day. After, we will go to the Center for our regular
activities.
Now, amid all these parties, food and entertainment, I am
told the Expansion will be complete. However, there still
is no definite date. As soon as I know, you will know. In
.the meantime, please be prepared that sometime in December,
the Center may be closed to enable Regina, Sue and I to move
everything back and get reorganized. Well, we'll try to
reorganize anyway. This will not effect any parties except
maybe our birthday party. The good news is it won't be long
now and you'll be back "home."
--,
.-
Because of the uncertain plans and dates for moving back
to Town Hall, our annual Christmas party at the Center is
not possible. There is a lot of planning and advanced
ordering that goes into this type of party. Because of the
uncertainty at this time, I feel it is best to make other
arrangements. So, if we are still at Schlathaus, instead of
one big party, we will have a series of little parties.
Beginning Thurs., Dec. 16 there will be snacks and "goodies"
for us to enjoy throuhout the day. If you would like to
bring cookies or holiday treat to shar~ with all at this
time, please feel free to do so. We'll just party for a
week. Of course, if we are closed due to moving back, this
will not occur.
A big thank you and hug to Kay Andrews for making and
donating the beautiful decorated fall basket for a raffle.
The basket was won by Pauline Sherbak at our Thanksgiving
Luncheon. Congratulations Pauline!
Blood pressure screening has been cancelled this month.
Diana from the Office of the Aging will be at Schlathaus on
Dec. 9 at 11:00 a.m. Our birthday partY.fwill be on Wed.,
Dec. 29. We need 3 birthday cakes, please let me know if
you will bring one. Beginning next year (1994) there will
be a change in the birthday party procedure. It has been
suggested that those who have a birthday in the month should
bring the cake. This will eliminate the same people always
getting "stuck" bringing the birthday cakes.
Our two students from Dutchess Community College, Karen
Barone and Loretta Mygan will be leaving us. Loretta's last
day will be Thurs. Dec. 9 and Karen's last day will be Fri.
Dec. 10. They have brought us some interesting projects and
games and have certainly brought us their youth and
enthusiasm. I am sure they would appreciate your comments
on their performance and activities. Both have also been
helpful Regina, Sue and me. It has been a pleasure to have
both Loretta and Karen with us.
The Lions Club needs old eyeglasses or hearing aids.
These are used for those less fortunate. So if you have any
you no longer want or need bring them to the Center. I will
see to it that they are given to the Lions Club.
For those paying dues by the month, December dues is
$2.00. Don't forget the COMPLAINT JAR! DROP YOUR QUARTERS
IN!
A very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday to all of
you!!!! And a big hug too!! !!!
