The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Committee was held October 10, 1995 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York. The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph 1. Holt. The minutes of the September 12, 1995 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr. Chappas seconded by Mr. Friedman with the following addition. On page 5 under Road Runners Race it should be noted that the Club was given permission to put in 2 posts at the finish line to hold a banner and a clock. To do this they will need to insert two sleeves in the ground so they could be used in the future. It was emphasized that the sleeves must be low enough so people would not trip over them or it would interfere with the mowers or equipment. Mr. Friedman mentioned that the banner poles from the Mid Hudson Runners race at Robinson Lane had not been taken down and the sleeves covered. Mr. Ennesser said that he would contact Mr. Miller to see that this is taken care of. OUTGOING LETTERS 1. Letters to the Town Board for the following. A. Mrs. Brockway 1 ~ ' indicated in this letter that the application for 1996 Youth Development/Delinquency grant has been approved in the amount of$7,652. She also noted that final allocation of these funds is dependent on reappropriation in the state budget. She also indicated that the Town must pass a Resolution by January 1, to accept the 1996 funds. A letter was received from the Wappinger Central School District Activities and Sports Fund Raising Committee requesting use of Schlathaus Park on October 28, 1995 to run a flea market. This would be in conjunction with several other fund raising events to run on the same day. The flea market would be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and in case of rain will be held at the Myers Comers School. They also requested that the event be posted on the bulletin boards located at the Park. Approval was given to hold this event at the Park and the $10.00 fee would apply. Mr. Chappas will inform the committee of the decision and the fee due. An invitation was received from the Wappingers United Soccer Club to attend their dedication ceremony at the Airport Park Soccer fields on September 30th at 9:00 a.m. This invitation was previously sent to members on September 25th. Approval was received from the Myers Comers School to hold the Adult Volleyball program at their site on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. from October 3, 1995 to April 30, 1996. A copy of a letter addressed to the Town Board regarding the Castle Point Recreation site Community Development Block grant for Water Supply facilities was received from Peter J. Paggi ofPaggi and Martin. His letter referenced the unexpended monies from the 1995 grant which must be used by November 30, 1995. He has targeted several potential uses for these funds and requested how the Town Board wanted to proceed in this matter. It was suggested that a letter be written to the Town Board indicating that it is our hope to eventually have a building with rest rooms and storage at that site and that if there are any funds left from the $13,000. that they request Paggi and Martin to compile a list of all necessary hardware, i.e. fountains, sinks, toilets and include it in the 1995 grant. We wanted to use as much of the $13,000. as possible. SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the senior activities for the month of September. This report is attached to these minutes. She also presented a Commendation given by the Dutchess County Legislature to the Town of Wappinger Senior Citizens' Center Award Winners, Dutchess County Fair and mentioned that they had attended the Legislature meeting that afternoon to receive this Commendation and were thrilled. A copy of this Commendation is 2 . . . - attached to these minutes. Mrs. DeLisa indicated that we need to purchase a couple of more tables. We will look into prices for them. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Reimer mentioned that the Schlathaus Race was held October 7th. He hasn't heard from Linda Stow regarding the turnout. The trophies and medals ordered were really nice. All of the directors for the winter programs are returning again this fall. Aerobics will be held at Wappinger Junior High School in the cafeteria on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. Pat Reese (DJ) will be returning Director for this class. Volleyball is held at Myers Comers School on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. with Walter Leczinski as Director and Basketball is held at Wappinger Junior High School on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. with Mark Caprara as Director. The Evergreen Chorus has been contacted to entertain for the Christmas Party which will be held at Schlathaus Park on December 3rd. Mr. Reimer has not had any confirmation on this. He mentioned that he has put in a request to use Myers Comers School for a rain site for the Halloween Party but to date we have not received the approval. HALLOWEEN Miss Gutzler mentioned that she has been working on plans for the Haunted House and the inventory of supplies for the Haunted House has been completed.. She also praised Steve Tompkins mentioning that he had taken personal time during the weekend to come and let her in Schlathaus. He also left his home phone number in case she needed something. She mentioned that she would like to have access to the house so that they could start decorating during the next couple of weekends. She will pick up a key at the Recreation Office. She mentioned that the art class at Myers Comers School is painting pumpkins and is helping with the art work. Miss. Gutzler also gave credit to Mrs. Korz for her idea of the haunted house and all the work she does on the Halloween Party. The Haunted House will be open at I :00 on Sunday, Oct. 29th. Mrs. Korz mentioned that she is still collecting donations. She has received a $15. Gift certificate from Play It Again Sports and tomorrow she will get something from Wendy's. Kentucky Fried Chicken said that they will mail some coupons. She has spoken with a Bob McCluskey from Country Buffet and they will probably give something. She is having a hard time getting in contact with McDonalds since they opened the new store on Route 376 but she will keep trying. AJRPORTP~SOCCER Mr. Chappas requested that the porta johns be turned so that they face the field 3 . . instead of the parking lot. He also requested that soccer be given keys or combination to the lock on the gate at Airport Park in case an emergency vehicle needs access. It was also requested that a sign be placed at the Park. We will get prices for a sign. Mr. Holt mentioned that we should also have a key for the building. We also need to know what is in the building in terms of equipment and maybe possibly think of installing an alarm. It was also requested that if we have money in the budget that we should purchase some bleachers or benches. For the time being we will put some from Robinson Lane out at the big fields. Mr. Holt said that the maintenance guys have been out at Robinson Lane replacing planks and putting some water seal on them to see if that would help preserve them. BOAT RAMP Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he thought that the docks should be left in until the 1st of November. He also asked about the status of the signs to be put at the docks for the parking etc. and Mr. Holt said that he would review it and hopefully we will get a P.o. to proceed with this project. We will also need to order the permit applications and the vehicle stickers. Mr. Ennesser mentioned that we have received the new dock hardware. SAFETY Mr. Holt mentioned that someone put a hole in the ballfield fence next to the store (right field fence). Mr. Ennesser was asked ifhe would do another safety check on all the fences and equipment. Mr. Friedman mentioned that one of the swing seats at Robinson Lane is broken and should be removed and repaired. ROBINSON LANE/LITTLE LEAGUE Mr. Friedman mentioned that we need 'No Softball' signs placed on SL-2 and Holt Field. Mr. Friedman mentioned that the grease pad seems to have disappeared from the roof at Robinson Lane and he was asked to call Mr. Provost and see ifhe knows anything about its whereabouts. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Mr. Holt mentioned that the big freezer went out at Robinson Lane and Little League lost a lot of the food that they had purchased for the fall ball season. Mr. Holt also mentioned that the inside of the building needs to be cleaned. He said that he has spoken to Gail Provost about this and she said that she is getting a crew together to clean it. Mr. Friedman was asked to follow up on this (IT MUST BE CLEANED). 4 , .' Mr. Holt mentioned that the Town owns the Rymer Property and hopefully by the end of the year we will be able to get in there to start to clear it in preparation for moving the Hughsonville Playground to that area. Mr. Holt mentioned that he will speak with Mr. Verlin about the three Christmas parties: December 3rd (Town Children's party), December 8th (Senior Center party at Villa), and December 12th (Town wide Senior Party at Elks). He mentioned that he would send a letter to Mr. Tremper thanking him for the donation of the Mets tickets for the raffle sponsored by the Elks for the Senior Christmas Party. It was suggested that each year we invite a different sponsor to the party as a guest of the Seniors. This year is was suggested that we invite Michael Tremper since he has done so much for the party. Mr. Holt still has to speak with Pat Moore of the Southern Dutchess Exchange regarding support from them and we still haven't heard anything from the Rotary. We still have to talk to Mr. Metzger regarding a donation for the Elks Party. We have put sealer on the basketball court at Quiet Acres. Spook Hill should be paved in the near future . We still have to have the area around the Martz Field building paved and some paving work done around the bam on Montfort Road. Mr. Foster has promised to do this before November 1st. The additional parking area at Robinson Lane still has to be done this fall. We still want to do the fencing at field #7 at Robinson Lane this fall. OAK RIDGE SUBDIVISION The Commission reviewed the above subdivision plat and voted to take money in lieu ofland since there is already a recreation area on Spook Hill Road. We also feel that the land is not feasible for recreational use and the money received could be used to upgrade the existing park. LANDS OF KABLAOUI The Committee reviewed the above subdivision plat and voted to take money in lieu of land since there is already a recreation area nearby and the money could be used for improvements to the existing park. There was a discussion regarding the charging for the Southern Dutchess News. Since it is our main source of advertising, we might have to change some of our procedures. It was stated that we continue to put the articles in the paper but we might also have to utilize the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Cable Community Service. Mr. Reimer mentioned that the sign 5 . .. boards at Schlathaus are not in good condition. The runners are loose and the letters do not stay in place. Mr. Tompkins has tightened the runners and now it is hard to get the letters on. Mr. Ennesser will look into getting a new sign. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. on a motion by Mr. Chappas seconded by Mrs. Korz. So if you know of someone in need of sunshine, let Helen know. Thank you Helen! WANTED!!! Suggestions for our Thanksgiving Luncheon. Remember the restaurant must be able to accommodate about 80 or more people. The WALKING CLUB participants all deserve congratulations! We have some very serious walkers!! Although quantity is not the most important goal here (health benefits are) I'd like to congratulate our top five walkers. Helen Socha walked more than 330 miles, Ruth Speedling 213 miles, Al Laurino 99 miles, Ruth Gallo 88 miles, Millie Grosso 79 miles. Now that's a lot of shoe leather walking around the Town Hall! The new year for the Walking Club begins Oct. 2nd. Start now! A new chart will be made up, just add your name and start walking. Six times around the Town Hall is a mile. Just mark the number of times you walk around, I will convert it to miles later. Walking is considered one of the best physical exercises you can do for your health. It can help reduce blood pressure, regulate insulin for diabetics, keep your heart healthier and so much more. No you don't have to walk 300 miles in a year, walk only what is comfortable for you. And for you top walkers, Helen and Ruth have both walked a lot of miles. That's a challenge for some of you to meet. So let's keep walking. Don't forget to write your times around the building down. Only those who participate in walking can enjoy our Award Luncheon! 2 Hospice has asked us to participate in their "Basket" program. They bring a basket to those they care for. Items include craft items such as our "hugs", little soaps and toiletries and much more. It would be nice for us to help with this for a Thanksgiving project. I will post a list of suggested items for everyone to see and will talk about this again. Enjoy the poems by Sue Bush and George Brannen. This NEW ADDITION was started in February so you all have the opportunity to share your creative writing, thoughts, drawing or cartoon. Come on Seniors, let's see what your thoughts are! Don't be shy! Share your thoughts and creativity with us!!!!I will include these in the newsletter. We have many talented seniors at the Center. Some do crafts, some paint or draw, some write poetry and/or stories, some have wonderful and creative ideas. You may submit your "writing" or even a drawing or cartoon to me at any time. Please do not submit preprinted articles etc. from other sources. I am sure we will all enjoy reading or seeing the creativity of our fellow seniors. The Wappinger Lions Club needs old eyeglasses or hearing aids. If you have any you no longer want or need, bring them to the Center. I will see to it that they are given to the Lions Club. For those paying dues by the month, Oct. dues is $2.50. Also, if anyone is interested in paying dues on a yearly basis, feel free to do so. Yearly dues is $25.00. A big hug to you all! Smile!!! 3 CREATIVE CORNER COMPLAINT OF CHAUCER TO HIS EMPTY PURSE by GEORGE BRANNEN To you my purse and to no other one I complain, for you are my lady dear! I am so sorry that my money's gone And certainly that is no cause for cheer, I feel I might as well be on my beir; So to your mercy now I cry Be heavy again or otherwise I die. Now though it be so this day or night That from you, the blissful sound I hear Or see the color like the sun so bright With yellowness that has no peer. Queen of comfort and good company Be heavy again or otherwise I die. Now purse, that to my life is light My saviour as down in this world am I, Out of trouble help me through your might; Though as my treasurer you failed to qualify; For as poor as any friar am I. So yet I pray and to your kindness cry Be heavy again or otherwise I die. 0, conqueror of Brutus A1bioun! Who through lineage and free election Became king, this song to you I send So you might all my troubles mend And have mind upon my supplication. George wrote this as a school project a translation of a Chaucer piece. By the way he got an A for his effort. Good work George! 4 (over) , , BEGGING FOR LOVE by SUE BUSH I passed a man with a cup in his hand, Begging for some one to understand Why he is the way he is. The strain of heartache was etched on his face And his eyes were filled with pain that Were made by his family, friends and loved ones too. They called him a failure A loser for sure, that was his name For not having any wealth or fortune too. But wealth is not found in your heart It just plays a part of the way we live. He looked so dejected and so forlorn As he held out his shaking hand Holding his cup, standing there since dawn Will you please help fill my cup With a little faith in me and a little love too That's all I ask of you. 5
