OLD BUSINESS - West Point Concert - Buffet NEW BUSINESS - MEETING ADJOURNED NEXT MEETING RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 1,2000 NEXT MEETING MARCH 7, 2000 AT 7:00 P.M. AT SCHLATHAUS PARK The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was held February 1, 2000 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New York. The meeting was opened by Acting Chairman Ronald Friedman at 7:05 p.m. with the following people present: Kathi DeLisa, Senior Citizen Director, Stephen Lowery, Recreation Director, and Commission Members James Chappas, Ellen Korz and Joanne Vazquez. The minutes of the January 11,2000 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr. Chappas seconded by Mrs. Korz with all in favor. CORRESPONDENCE A letter was received from Patrick DeHaven of the Mid Hudson Road Runners Club to request the use of Robinson Lane Recreation Area on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17 for their 22nd annual Dutchess County Classic road race. Mr. Friedman mentioned that the Road Runners Club and Little League would have to work out an agreeable schedule for the Saturday usage. He mentioned that Mr. Farrell had come to one of our recent meetings and requested that when approval is given for this usage, that they work with Little League and if weather is good that the Club does not tie up all the fields if not necessary. Little League would like to work with them but still get in as many games as they can during Saturday. A letter was received from Spiegel, Brown and Fichera regarding the case of Williams v Town of Wappinger. This is the case on the accident at Reese Park where the girl swung from a rope and fell. The letter states that the deposition of Steve Tompkins has been rescheduled for April 6, 2000 at 11 :00 a.m. at the offices ofVasti & Sears, 1733 Main Street, Pleasant Valley, New York. This is the same day that Mr. Holt is scheduled to appear. OUTGOING LETTERS 1. Letters to Little League and Soccer regarding the change in liaison. 2. Memo to the Comptroller regarding the summer program salaries. 3. Letter to Town Board stating Mr. Friedman be Acting Chairman while Mr. Holt is away. 4. Letter to Rich Bruner thanking him for donation to Photo Club. 5. Letter to Brian Acard, Attorney regarding information on O'Leary deposition. 6. Letter to Town Board requesting P.O. for Custodial Overtime for Saturday program at Myers. Recreation Commission Minutes February 1, 2000 7. Letter to Town Board requesting P.O. for Goldlieffor printing of booklet. 8. Letters to A-I Portable Toilets, EnviroClean, Jones Septic and M. & O. Sanitation for prices for porta johns for 2000. 9. Letter to Town Board requesting permission to go to bid for mower and backhoe. 10. Letter to Kevin Hathorn regarding trailer at Rockingham. LITTLE LEAGUE/ ROBINSON LANE Mr. Chappas mentioned that Mr. Farrell had called him and mentioned that he is concerned about field usage and has received a copy of a ball schedule from the Wappinger Jr. High School using fields at Robinson Lane. He said that Little League had received no request from the school and as far as Mr. Chappas knew the Town had not received any request either. Are they assuming that they can use the fields? Mr. Friedman mentioned that he would write a letter to Mr. Skip Rottcamp stating that in order to use any of the Town's facilities a request must be submitted to the Town. Mr. Farrell said that he is willing to work with the School but they need to know that there are procedures and they can't just assume they can come in and use the facilities. Mr. Friedman mentioned that Mr. Chappas should remind Little League that they have been remiss in sending in their formal request for the use of the fields. BUS TRIP TO MOHEGAN Mr. Lowery mentioned that the bus trip to Mohegan Sun is scheduled for March 19th and sign up begins on Thursday, February 3rd at the Schiathaus Office RECREATION BOOKLET Mr. Lowery mentioned that the booklet for the recreation activities for the year 2000 is now at Goldlief and should be ready in 8 to 10 business days. It will be in color and should look really nice. Distribution will be through Town Hall. He mentioned also that some of the Town Board Members have requested some to had out to their constituents. Ifwe can get them soon enough we can hand them out at the Little League Registrations. The booklet came out to include 10 pages of information. RECREATION DIRECTORS REPORT Mr. Lowery showed the members the samples of the fliers for summer programs _ the concert schedule, the family program, etc. Mr. Friedman mentioned that on the concert flier 2 Recreation Commission Minutes February I, 2000 maybe he should put the type of music that will be played. Mr. Lowery reminded everyone that the West Point Concert Band will be at Roy C. Ketcham on April 18 and the Jazz Knights at Schlathaus on August II. We will have to arrange for a buffet for each of these concerts. Some of the bus trips that have been scheduled are YankeeIMets baseball game, family trip to Great Escape, Saratoga Raceway, Mohegan Sun trips, and the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show. He has received information on a Skyhawks Program which the Town of Poughkeepsie uses and was interested in their after school program. Mr. Lowery mentioned that they (Skyhawks) do all the registrations and the actual running of the programs. We would only help with the advertising. Mr. Chappas asked if they would be interested in coming down to present the program at our next meeting. Mr. Lowery will check on this. He will be working on the Friday night teen program with a limited number of kids attending. A discussion was held regarding the pros and cons of the program. He is scheduling a program night for March 24 and another for April 7. SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT Mrs. Delisa handed out a report on the Senior activities for the month of January. This report is attached to these minutes. She mentioned that she has had interest in a Defensive Driving class for our Seniors group but we would need space to do the class. A discussion was held on the pros and cons of having the class. Mr. Friedman suggested that Mrs. DeLisa meet with the person to see if we have the facilitie's and would be able to hold the class. Mrs. DeLisa mentioned that she had attended a Dial A Ride meeting and they said that they needed people who are willing to help the seniors with packages etc. She asked if that would be something that the Rotary Interact Group could help with. She also asked if this might be something that the High School would be interested in. MAINTENANCE Mr. Holt left a letter to be handed out to Commission Members as follows: "As I mentioned at our last meeting our staffing for the maintenance function is not where it should be. We are trying to add qualified people but this will take some time. Until we are in a better position to handle our work load, I'm requesting all Commission Members submit their requests for maintenance support through me. This will help us plan the work schedule for our 3 Recreation Commission Minutes February 1,2000 maintenance people, and at the time time be able to prioritize their scheduled efforts. In the case of emergency in any of your areas feel free to contact mainenance directly. Thank you for your support.
