Proclamation Recognizing March 29, 2022 as Vietnam War Veterans Day
At a Regular Meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County,
New York, held at Town Hall, 20 Middlebush Road, Wappingers Falls, New York, on March 14,
2022.
The meeting was called to order by Richard Thurston, Town Supervisor, and upon roll
being called, the following was recorded:

The following Resolution was introduced by Councilwoman Bettina and seconded by
Councilman Phillips.
WHEREAS, throughout the history of the United States of America, countless brave individuals
have answered the call to patriotic duty, including Vietnam veterans who endured unspeakable
hardships and risked their lives fighting for the ideals of democracy. It was on March 29, 1973,
that the last 2,500 American combat troops were withdrawn from the battlefields of Vietnam,
and today, we solemnly commemorate the 49th anniversary of this day, and
WHEREAS, American involvement in the Vietnam War, one of the longest military conflicts in
America's history, began with the arrival of United States military personnel in South Vietnam
in the 1950s and ended with the fall of Saigon on April 30 1975, when the last Americans were
evacuated from the United States Embassy, and
WHEREAS, the Town of Wappinger recognizes the nine million Americans, approximately 7
million living today who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during this period and makes no
distinction between those who served in country, in-theater, or were stationed elsewhere during
those 20 years - all answered the call of duty, and
WHEREAS, the Town of Wappinger will never forget the memories of those who were killed in
action such as Major Daniel M. Martz Jr.,the first Dutchess County resident to die, and Major
Joseph MacDonald who is still missing in action, and
Now Therefore, Be it Resolved, that the Town Board of the Town of Wappinger, do hereby
proclaim March 29, 2022 as Vietnam War Veterans Day in the Town of Wappinger, Dutchess
County, New York.
The foregoing was put to a vote which resulted as follows:
RESULT: ADOPTED [UNANIMOUS]
