The =egular meetins of the Town of WoppingBr ~2creation Commission was
held at the Town Hall on March 11, 1976. The meeting was opened at 8:00
Present: Hugh J. Maurer, George Schlathaust Joseph Ennesser, Mary Schmalz
and Laura lick
Absent: Theresa Arkell, Richard Garren and Jean Beahan
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
Dr. Theodore Sturgis attended the meeting to discuss the Commission's
use of school facilities. Councilman Nicholas Johnson attended also.
Mr. Maurer explained to Dr. Sturgis that in the past the Commission had
no problem obtaining use of the school facilities but in the last two
years it seems that churches and other groups have been getting
preference. Last year when Mrs. Zick applied for the gyms she was told
it was too early, then when she reapplied at the proper time she was
told they were all booked up. Mr. Maurer said he felt the Commission
should get preference because their activities are open to all the Town
residents.
Mr. Ennesser said he felt that since the schools know that the Commission
is applying every year they should be put on a cal pf,diJr so tney don It
get short changed. Also Mr. Ennesser said that the Commission has
always had the whole gym at Wappingers Junior High for the gymnastics
program, but this year he was called two weeks after the program
started and was told he could not have the whole gym because the historicaJ
society. Mrs. lick explained that because there is so many girls in
the program 1/2 the gym is not enough room and this creates a dangerous
situation. Mr. Ennesser also said that last week at the boys basketball
program, the little league was given half the gYln for practice.
Dr. Sturgis asked the Commission if they have always gone to the
principals with the applications and if the problems were just with the
Junior High. Mr. Ennesser said yes they have always gone to the princip8J
and the Commission has had problems with the Junior High and Ketcham.

~rogram gets cancelled with just one days notice. Usually the Commission
had the gym every Monday night for 10 weeks, tf is year it was a
different night and time each week. The Commission received many complaints
from residents.
Dr. Sturgis said he didn't know what the problem COlIJ.d be, possibly it
might be because Mr. Sloat and Mrs. Smith are both new.
Hrs. Schmalz said that next year all sports on the Junior High level
will be cut out as far as the state is concerned and if it does happen
they ~vill h:ave to depend on the ,'iecreation Commission to take care of
1;1l~S age group.
Dr. Sturgis suggested that the Commission give him a list of what is
needed and he will sit down with all the schools and see what can be
done. Dr. Sturgis explained that next year there could possibly be a
problem with the High Schools due to the split sessions.
It was agreed t~ t Dr. Sturgis would get together with Mrs. lick to

Dr. Sturgis eskedif there was a com~iS3ion to cQmbine all the different
towns recreation. Mr. Johnson said no, but there should be and maybe

~<r. .;ichol':Js Johnson asked the Comi:1ission to let the Town Board know how
peop18 are working under the Youthful Offender Program. If the program
is ~ot working they want to know. Mr. Maurer said it could be a
worthwhile program with the proper supervision.

!~ W3S decided to not hire Mr. Barry Smith and to advertise in the paper
a~~ send letters to all the Colleges for a tennis instructor.

i<rs. Sch:nalz reproted Ihhat she had enough children for 1 possibly 2 teams
Also she knew a gentlemen who was nterested in coacheng and Mrs. Schmalz
th2~;ht it best that he take a course which is being offered at Dutchess
Cc~~~~ity College. The course cost $23.50 and Mrs. Schmalz wished to
k~cw of the Commission could pay for it. Everyone agreed it would be a
goc~ idea and the commission would pay for the course.
DI~~CTOR'S 2EPORT
r-:.:-s. Zick reported that r'1rs. Linda i'1ann would again run the \-Jomen' s
EX8r=ise Program and this time instruction on tennis strokes would also
be offered. Mrs. Zick said the program would start April 5, 1976.
