TOWN OF WAPPINGER RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF JULY 1, 1976 MEETING
Next meeting - July 29, 1976
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was
held at the Town Hall on July 1, 1976. The meeting was opened at 7:45 P.M.
Present: Hugh J. Maurer, George Schlathaus, Jean Beahan, Mary Schmalz and
Laura lick
Absent: Theresa Arkell, Joseph Ennesser and Richard Garren
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mrs. Laura lick reported that the baseball game at Shea Stadium was
cancelled because of rain, so the children did not see a game.
Mrs. Joann Kalaka, the Summer Playground Director, attended the meeting
to report on the Summer Program. Miss Kalaka said the program will start
July 6, 1976 and Miss Kalaka showed the Commission a copy of a pamphlet
which she had made up for each director and aid at the playgrounds. It
contained a list of all directors and aids employed, their addresses
and telephone numbers, all Commission members addresses and telephone
numbers, an emergency telephone number list and a schedule of all
activities. Also Miss Kalaka made up a daily report sheet for each
director to fill out. Miss Kalaka also reported that she had spoken
with the editor of the Southern Dutchess News and she had agreed to
put any pictures in the paper that Miss Kalaka took of the Summer
Pro g ram. _ _ _ ___ ____ _ _ _
Miss lick reported that she had received a price estimate from the
school on how much buses would cost for all the summer playground
activities: the free swim, learn to swim, basketball games and softball
games. The price was $2,431.
Mrs. ~lary Schmalz reproted that she had a catalogue with prices for
permanent balance beams and parrallel bars. The balance beam was $110.00
and the parallel bars were $98.00. The Commission decided that it
would prefer not to have permanent ones installed. Everyone voted in
favor of ordering a belance beam(nonpermanent) and parallel bars to
be used at Martz Field. Mrs. Schmalz said she would take care of
ordering them.
TENNIS
Mrs. Dora Reinhard attended the meeting to report on the tennis program.
Mrs. Reinhard said they had 3 ladder tournaments in progress; a men's,
Womens, and juniors with 61 people taking part; Two sessions of organized
play with 24 people participating; 3 clinics with 36 people; 7 adult
clinics with 84 ~eople and 7 children clinics with 70 people. A total
of 275 people. Mrs. Reinhard said a few complaints had been received
but generally everyone seemed pleased with the program. wwo more weeks
remained for the adult clinic and 3 more weeks for the childrens clinics
after that there would be no clinics for another week and possibly
they would have team tennis between East Fishkill for the juniors and
Fishkill for the women. Miss Kalaka asked Mrs. Keinhard what time
would be best to cring in playground children. r-:r$, Reinhard said
Friday ~etween 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. would be good.

CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received saying that shooting was going on down in Reese Park
and some of the sh~. were coming close to some homes.
The Y.W.C.A. wrote to thank the Commission for the use of the tennis
courts this spring and to request the courts again for their fall
program 8S they had last year. The Commission decided to let them use
the carts under the same rules as lEt year.
APPLICATIONS
The Commission received two applications for the open position on the
Recreation Commission. The Commission unanimously voted to recommend to
the Town Board that Mr. Ronala Petro be appointed to fill the unexpired
term of Mr. Richard Garren
Mr. Maurer rep~rted that he had met with a Mr. Drew G. Kopf who has a
workshop group which performs plays for children. Mr. Kopf could not
make this meeting but he is going to send information on the plays
and their cost. Mr. Maurer also said that Mr. Kopf could take care
of the arrangements for getting matching funds..
The date of the next meeting was set for July 29, 1976. The meeting was
closed at 10:00 P.M. /
