NEXT MEETING FEBRUARY 8, 1993
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was
held January 11, 1993 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger,
Dutchess County,New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 P.M. by Chairman Ralph J. Holt,
Others present were Senior Citizen Director Kathi Delisa, Recreation Director
Bernie Reimer, Commission Members Terry Fisher, Barbara Gutzler, Ellen Korz
Stephen Miller and Donald Rider.
The minutes of the December 14, 1992 meeting were approved on a motion
by Mr. Miller seconded by Mrs. Korz with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A contract and memo detailing how the $1,700. would be spent was
received from Fred Dahl of the Wappinger District Pop Warner. This was forwarded
to the Town Board for necessary action and payment in 1992.
A letter has been received from Floyd Scholz of the Dutchess Debs.
He was requesting a change in the dates requested for their tournament from
July 24, 25 and 26 to July 31 and August 1 with August 2 as a raindate. Mr. Holt
mentioned that he will be attending a meeting along with Mr.Miller on Thursday
regarding the possibility of the Town of Wappinger little league hosting the
Eastern States Regionals this summer. Before approving the date for Mr. Scholz
we will have to check on the dates for the regionals.
A letter has been received from Elizabeth A. Harris, President of the
Southern Dutchess Women's Softball league requesting fields for the 1993 season.
This was turned over to Mr. Reimer for consideration but it was noted that we
only can offer Quiet Acres.
A letter was received from Donna Tuttle, Youth Programs Claims Analyst,
stating that we still have not put in our claim forms for the $7,000. grant for
1992. Mrs. Roe stated that this has been completed.
A memo was received from Supervisor Smith thanking the Commission for
the Tour of the recreation facilities.
A letter was received from Kelly Battista of EnviroPlan Associates, Inc.
regarding Pacific States land, Town of Wappinger. In her letter she requested
a list of all the parks available to Town of Wappinger residents including size,
location and services. A list of the Town recreation areas will be forwarded to
her.
A memo was forwarded to the Commission from Supervisor Smith thanking
us for the invitation to the 1st Annual Christmas Party at the Elks on December 15th.
Mr. Holt and Mrs. Delisa mentioned that they had received many nice comments from

the attendees. The Elks Club did a super job decorating the hall and the dinner
served was excellent. Each Senior received a small bottle of wine and a small
box of candy which was distributed by Santa. There were also numerous raffles
of gifts donated by local merchants. Mr. Holt said that the party was paid for
totally from contributions from local businessmen and professionals. He also
said that the Elks indicated that they would be willing to do this again next
year and might consider having two dinners to accommodate more Seniors. Thank
you letters are going to each individual contributor and a letter has been sent
to the Editor of the Southern Dutchess News and the Poughkeepsie Journal expressing
thanks for the support received for this project.
A letter and resume was received from Jody Lynn Perry. A letter will
be sent to her stating that we do not have any positions available and to thank
her for her interest.
Mn Holt received a telephone call and a letter followed from a Ben
Marguglio requesting to use the Martz Field Tennis Courts for a clinic this summer.
The Clinic would be held for 2 weeks, 4 days a week, 2 sessions a day for 2 hours a
session. The charge would bg $80.00 a student. The Town would geta.percentage of
the fee collected. There was a discussion on how it would affect our present
program and whether it could be held after our program. It was decided that we
needed further information and that he would be asked to provide a detailed plan.

2. Letter to Russ Benes - Thanks to the Elks Club for Assistance and support in
providing the Christmas Party for the Seniors.

4. Letter to Betsy Brockway sending claim forms for the 1992 expenses.
5. Memo to Comptroller including 2 checks to cover the expenses of the Townwide
Christmas party at the Elks.
6. Thank you to Mike Garrett "Ben & Jerry's" for the ice cream for the Christmas
party at Town Hall.
7. Letter to Leprechaun - Re trip to Peddlers Village.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the Senior activities for the month of
December which is attached to these minutes. She also noted the following:
1. December was a month of parties.
a. December 4th a surprise 80th birthday party for Tony.
b. The annual Christmas Luncheon at the Villa on December 11th.
c. December 15th was the Townwide Christmas Party at the Elks.
d. December 18th 82 Seniors attended a Christams Party at the Town Hall

2. On December 8th there was a bus trip to Peddlers Village
3. We now have 45 on the waiting list for the center.
4. The art exhibit at Chase Manhattan Bank has had many positive
comments. Tomorrow the artists and Mrs. Delisa are scheduled to meet at the Bank
for photos. The Southern Dutchess News will also be there for photos and to do a
news article.
5. January has scheduled:
a. lecture on Medigap Insurance on the 6th
b. Blood Pressure screening on the 19th
c. P.J. party on the 15th
d. Monthly birthday party on the 28th.
6. Mrs. Delisa has picked up an application from Chase Manhattan Bank for
a Neighborhood Grant ranging from $500. to $3,000. She mentioned that she has
spoken to someone and found out that the Center was eligible--that the Center is
funded by the Town but also non-profit. It was suggested that she call to get some
ideas for eligible projects. A suggestion was to look into a bus trip for Radio
City for the Christmas Show and Mrs. Delisa mentioned her video project with the
school.
7. The Seniors have requested a bus trip to Atlantic City so we have
requested prices. We received a quote of $825. from leprechaun and $975. from
Canterbury. Canterbury has also come back with the following proposal: $650.
for the bus (which would be the Town charge) plus charging the individuals $18.00,
The $18.00 would be split $7.00 to the Seniors, $5.00 for food vouchers and $6.00
toward the bus. Now we are not giving FREE bus transportation as done on previous
trips but we are sponsoring a trip. After a discussion the Commission had no problem
with this proposal.
RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer mentioned that we have had a couple of problems at the Junior
High with our adult programs and that he is working on them. He said that the
gym teachers do not want us to use their equipment so we have purchased 2 volleyball
nets which have to be strung up every time we play. He also mentioned that we really
need a pole for the middle of the two nets and that he has Dick Sloat, School
Athletic Director looking for one for him. Mr. Miller mentioned that he would look
at his school to see if he might be able to find one for us. He also mentioned that
possibly Mr. Vorndran might be able to build something. Mr. Reimer will also check
into prices for purchasing one.
The West Point Jazz Concert will be held at the Wappinger Jr. High on
March 5th. Mr. Reimer mentioned that Mr. Biasotti had called him and said that the
reason we are not able to use Ketcham was because the production sets for the
school play are too elaborate to be moved not because of the problems with the
magic show. Mr. Reimer said that he has requested the use of the cafeteria for
the buffet following the concert. Mr. Fisher was given several names to contact
for prices for the buffet which should be for approximately 50 people.

The Saturday morning programs are in progress with both the
gymnastic and basketball having a good sign up. The instructors for the
gymnastic program are the same as last year, Brenda Peura and Art Goldner with
several helpers. Since Mr. Len Reed was unable to do the basketball program this
year, we were a to get Scott Silverstein, Coach of the John Jay J.V. team as
the Director with several helpers.
M~ Reimer has been talking with Mr Silverstein about having a summer
clinic for the children using the courts at Martz Field.
He is also working on the Summer program and had already booked 5 of
the 8 summer concerts.
A telephone request has been received from the New Hackensack Fire
Company to use the Schlathaus Property for parking for their Bavarian Festival
on June 11,12, and 13. This request was approved and it was noted that we would
again rope off areas not to be used.
Mark Reed has requested to hold a summer track and field club using the
Ketcham track. Mr. Reimer will try to get more information on this.
LITTLE LEAGUE/ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Miller and Mr. Holt will be attending a meeting this Thursday
evening with Little League to discuss the possibility of their hosting the Eastern
States Regionals. Mr. Miller emphasized that the blacktop work must be done as
soon as possible. The area has already been scraped and must be done so we don't
have a mess in early Spring with mud. We also have to think about replacing the
roof on the concession building. A suggestion was also made to put up a sign at the
entrance to the Park. If the regionals are held here, our maintenance crew will
have extra work. Of course, it would be a great opportunity for the Town of
Wappinger --a good exposure.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr.Holt reported the following:
1. He is still talking with the Town Board regarding the salaries for
part time recreation employees. The meeting with the Board is scheduled for
January 25th.
2. He will also be talking to the Town Board on the 25th about fees
in lieu of land. Again, he stated that our policy is 95% of the time to take
land but that we do want the 5% where we would have money if we thought it best.
3. The bids for the mower have been put on hold as there was confusion
regarding the extra additional bid that Pine Plains Tractor added for the roll bar.
4. Supervisor Smith is still working on the White's property.

5. We are having a terrible time at Spook Hill with vandalism.
Shingles have been ripped off the roof of the building and the wall is loaded
with graffiti. Mr. Holt also noted that a spruce and maple tree were cut
down by the basketball court during December. He is going to work with Mr.
Vorndran to compile a list of the vandalism for 1992.
6. Supervisor Smith went to Albany a while ago to research the maps
on the Yacht Club. She found out that the Club does own the beach area. She
is now trying to work with the Club to give the Town an easement so we could
put in some picnic tables and use this area. We also might be able to use this
to put in small boats. We are still waiting for an update on this.
7. The Town performed an inventory and the significant fact was that
we had an inventory. A few years ago we didn't have anything.
8. We will be working at Castle POint in the near future on clearing
the brush and dead trees from the area just across the road.
9. The Senior Citizen room expansion looks good for 1993. Supervisor
Smith is still working on this.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 on a motion by Mr. Miller seconded
by Mrs. Korz.

JANUARY 1993 REPORT TO RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 1992
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
December was a month of parties at the Senior Citizen
Center, as well as regular activities including arts/crafts,
exercise, oil painting, cards and pokeno. The Center was
closed Dec. 11 for our Christmas luncheon at Villa Borghese,
Dec. 15 for the Christmas dinner at the Elks Lodge and
Christmas Day.
The month began with a surprise birthday party on Dec. 4,
for Tony, who turned 80. Tony was presented with a chef's
hat with "Chef Tony" written on it and a few other gifts
.from individuals. The annual Christmas luncheon was held on
Dec. 11 at Villa Borghese. There was great food, music by
John Palumbo and dancing. Although the weather kept several
seniors from attending, the 66 who attended had a wonderful
time. Four baskets of food given to the seniors by Brownie
Troop 440 were raffled.
On Dec. 15, the Center closed and th~ seniors attended
the Christmas dinner sponsored by the Recreation Commission
at the Elks Club. This was a very successful day with 175
seniors and guests attending~ The food was excellent, the
music lively and entertaining. Each senior received a small
box of candy and small bottle of wine, delivered by Santa.
Prizes of wine, gift certificates and other gifts were
raffled. The seniors were delighted and had a wonderful
time.
On Dec. 18, 82 seniors attended the Center Christmas
party held in the large meeting room at Town Hall. The
party was catered by J & M Catering. They provided chicken
marsala, baked ham, roast potatoes, green beans and salad.
Mike Garrett from Ben and Jerry's donated and served ice
cream for dessert. Santa arrived and gave each senior a
gift. Four more baskets of food donated by Brownie Troop
440 were raffled. Town Hall employees were invited to join
us. It was a fun day!
Our monthly birthday party was held on Dec. 10. After
all those parties, the last week of the month was quiet.
Oil painting and exercise classes were cancelled.
The Dec. 8th trip to Peddler's Village successful. Those
who went enjoyed it very much.
There was an average of 32 seniors per day at the Center.
The average Monday attendance was 12. There are 184

ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. The art exhibit at Chase Manhattan Bank was hung on Dec.
7th. The response has been very positive. On Jan. 12, the
artists and myself will go to the bank to have photos taken
by the bank manager. Southern Dutchess News will also be
there to take photos and do a news article.
2. January events include a lecture on Medigap insurance by
Amy McAden from the OFA on the 6th, Diana Weibrecht from the
OFA on the 14th, blood pressure screening on the 19th and
the monthly birthday party on the 28. The big event for the
month is a pajama party on the 15th. All must come in pj's
if they wish to participate in the food and ~~n. We will
have pizza, popcorn and whatever else I come up with by
then. Should be interesting!
ISSUES TO BE DISCUSSED
1. Chase Manhattan Bank now has applications for
neighborhood grants ranging from $500-$5Q90. Non-profit
organizations are eligible. Would like to discuss possible
uses for such a grant.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!! May 1993 bring
happiness and good health to each of you.
On behalf of Regina, Sue and myself, I want to thank you
all for the wonderful thoughtful gift you gave each of us.
It was certainly a pleasant surprise and very much
appreciated. We are very touched by your thoughtfulness and
generosity. Thank you so much!!! .
We also want to thank you for the wonderful year you have
given us. Your cooperation, support and patience is truly
appreciated. Thank you for working together with us to make
our Center the BEST in Dutchess County.
I have spent sleepless nights thinking of ways to help
you all through party withdrawal. Well, the only solution
and antidote to this addiction is to have a party. Remember
when you and your friends use to have "sleep overs" also
known as "slumber parties" and "pajama parties?" Well, we
won't sleep over, but on Fri.,Jan. 15, we will have a pajama
party. There will be popcorn, soda and I can't tell you
all, but you must wear pajama's to join in the food and fun.
Now, some say they are too embarrassed. Well, you don't
have to be embarrassed. Just wear your PJ's over you
clothes. A word of caution, you must be decent. Anyway, we
will have lots of fun. Are you interested in seeing those
old Frankenstein and Dracula movies that use to scare you
and give you nightmares? Please let me know. If enough
would like those, we will even show them while we party.
After all those sleepless nights thinking about this, I am
bringing my pillow. Wake me if I snore.! ZZZZZZZZZZZZ
The New Year will hopefully bring us an expansion of our
Center. Thanks to all of you who wrote letters to Senator
Sa1and requesting his assistance. I know we are all looking
forward to more space to enable us to have a more
diversified agenda.
Many of you are now paying your dues on a monthly basis.
If you would like to do this, I suggest you pay your $2.00
or $2.50 (depending on the month) at the beginning of the
month. Mark the amount you are paying on the attendance
sheet so you will be credited for the proper amount. You
must still sign in every week and check the days you attend
in the week. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.
I want to thank all of you who work on crafts. The sale
of these crafts help to make our parties and luncheons
possible. Also, thank you to all of you who have made items
for our raffles. And thank you to those who buy raffle
tickets for these items as well as o~r 50/50 raffles. All
help to make our extra activities possible. .
Regina and Sue will be working together to bring bigger
and better craft projects for you to do. They will have one
special project that all may work on each month or so.
Those who do not wish to do these special projects may
choose to work on items we have done in the past. We hope
this wi 11 give you more variety as well "as more of a
challenge. Regina and Sue will coordinate these projects
together so there will be less confusion as to who is doing
what. They will also introduce projects that are timely in
regard to special holidays. Frequently, we have craft items
that are special orders, so you may be asked to help with
these orders when you are between projects. Suggestions are
welcome. So if you have a craft project you think others
would like to make, please let me know. I will see that
Regina and Sue put it in their craft schedule.
Mark your calendar for January 6. Amy McAden from the
Office of the Aging will be at the Center to give you
information on Medigap insurance and answer your questions
in regard to this. There have been oodles of questions in
regard to this issue, so don't miss it! Diana Weibrecht
will be at Town Hall on the 14th to assist you with other
services provided by the Office of the Aging. And there
will be blood pressure screening on the 19th. Please note
the Center will be closed on Mon., Jan 18 for Martin Luther
King's birthday.
In closing I want to wish each and everyone of you a
very HAPP~ AND HEALTHY NEW YEAR. AND A BIG HUG FOR ALL OF
YOU TOO! ! ! ! !
Well, I am partied out, but I want to wish each and every
one of you a very Happy Holiday and a healthy, Happy New
Year. A BIG HUG FOR ALL OF YOU!!! YOU ARE WONDERFUL!!
