The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation
Commission was held June 14, 1993 at Schlathaus Park, All
Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, N.V.
The meeting was called to order at 7:40 p.m. by Chairman
Ralph J. Holt.. Others present were Kathi DeLisa, Senior
Citizen Director, Bernie Reimer, Recreation Director,
Commission Members Joseph Ennesser, Ronald Friedman, Barbara
Gutzler, Ellen Korz, Stephen Miller, and Maintenance
Supervisor John Vorndran.
The minutes of the May 10, 1993 meeting were approved on

A letter was received from Chase Manhattan Bank stating
that they are unable to contribute toward our application to

A copy of a letter from Albert Roberts to Lawrence
Marcus of the New YOrk State Parks~ Recreation and Historic
Preservation was received and filed. This letter was in
regard to the lot alignment at the Montfort Road property.
A memo was received from Supervisor Smith regarding
Community Day 1993 which is scheduled September 12th with a
raindate of September 19th. The committee requested the use
of the speaker system which could be used with a car battery.
They also requested that the event be posted on the Community
sign at Schlathaus Park. Mr. Reimer will take care of this.
Information was forwarded to the Commission from Zoning
Administrator Herbert Levenson regarding requirements for
taking of recreation land. Mr. Holt requested that everyone
review this information.
A resolution approving the preliminary plat layout of
the Rymer Subdivision was received from the Planning Board.
A letter was received from Lt. Col. Frank Dubuy of the

Academy Jazz Knights to perform at Schlathaus Park on July

9th. It was suggested that we write a letter to the New
Hackensack Fire District requesting use of their corner lot
for parking and volunteer help with parking. It was also
suggested that we call the sheriff's office for two people
for traffic control.
A proposal was received from C. & J. Catering for the
buffet to be served the West Point Band after the concert an
the 9th. The total cost was $450.00. It was also noted that
the rain site far this concert will be R. C. Ketcham High
E;chool..
A letter was received from Sloper Willen stating that
Paul Martire, EMT-P would accept the position as Health
Director for the Town of Wappinger for the 1993 Summer

A letter was received from Betty Mensching, Chairperson
for the Eastern Region Tournament inviting the Commission
members to attend Opening Day ceremonies at 9:00 a.m. Monday,

A request was received from Little All Angels Nursery
School to reserve Schlathaus Park on June 19th from 8:00 a..m.
to 12:30 p..m. for their graduation ceremonies. They enclosed
a check for $10.00 to cover the fees due. This was approved.
A letter was received from D. C. Health Department
giving approval on our request for variances regarding the
immunization records and to allow alternate First Aid
coverage. Mr. Reimer mentioned that we still need a variance
to accept our W.S.I. who is only 19. He is working on this.

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed aut a report on the Senior Activities
far the month of May which is attached to these minutes.
RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer mentioned that the ad for the West Point
concert will be in the Poughkeepsie Journal and the Southern
Dutchess News. He will also put notices on the radio
stations. Fliers have also been distributed.
rhere has been a problem with the hiring of the Summer
Director. Mr. Holt is meeting with Supervisor Smith and
Comptroller Ann Buckley to resolve this situation.
Mr. Reimer mentioned that he has been talking with
Aristocrat Tours regarding a bus for a Radio City Music Show.
It would be open to all Town residents and it would be
scheduled during the week. The Town would pay for the bus.

Mr. Ennesser requested permission to work on the format
for the signs. He will personally go and discuss the
different materials and will get prices on screen printing
the sil:Jns;.

Mr. Friedman mentioned that there is a hole in the roof
of the 3rd base dugout. We will take a look at this and see
what we can do to repair it. The field at Martz is in need
of some clay. It was suggested that the best time to do this
is in the Fall so it has time to settle before Spring work
party for Little League.
TENNIS
Mrs. Korz mentioned that Mr. Casowitz will be starting
his next session shortly and has requested that we purchase a
new basket for the balls since the old one was not able to be
fixed. He will look into prices and get back with us. He
feels that he can get a good price on one.
SENIOR CITIZEN CHRISTMAS PARTY
Mr. Miller mentioned that the contact person for the
Elks regarding the Christmas Party is Peter McGerr. He said
that they are again interested in helping us put on a party.
Mr. McGerr's address is 77 Kent Road and his phone number is
298-9432. Mrs. DeLisa will contact him to try and set up a

Mr. Miller mentioned that we need more marking chalk a~
Robinson and Mr. Vorndran said that he had delivered some the
other day. It was also mentioned that we still need a bex to
be built to put the cardboard in for recycling. The garbage
under the pavilion is terrible. He will again speak with
Little League personnel. Maybe we need to place signs

touched up prior to the Eastern States and also we need to
have a plumber in to check the fittings. Mr. Vorndran will
get in touch with Mr. Ossenkop. Several of the dougout roofs
need to be repaired. in particluar SL-1. Grass and weeds
need to be trimmed under the bleachers.
Discussions are still in progress on obtaining electric

for the scoreboard at Memorial Field. We are estimating
approximately $4;000. to $5,000. far this project. We are
having Central Hudson work with us an the layout far the
electric. Mr. Eastwood is the contact person far this
project. Sylvan Lake has also mentioned that they would
donate service to the field.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt mentioned the following:
1. He met with officials at Castle Paint and found out
that we are not able to hook into their hydrant because that
hydrant draws its water from the river and they have problems
with the zebra mussels. Castle Pint is in the process of
digging 3 new wells. The location is not practical for us to
hook in. We are now back to our original plan which is to
dig a well. As for the playgrounds we will have to use
bottled water for the time being.

3. The Town has not. gone out. t.o bid far t.he clay for
the new field. Evidently t.here is a hold up with the D.E.C.
4. The building at Spook Hill has to be painted again
before the playground program start.s.
5. The rCDf at Spook Hill has to be fixed. We think we
~~n just pat.ch it. Mr. Vorndran will check and see if we
can get this done soon.
6. Quiet Acres looks great..
7. At Rockingham we should try and get t.he backstop out
as soon as possible at least to try artd show some good will
to the soccer people.

At Reese Park someone drove t.hrough the

9= At Airport Par'k we are order'ing the lime and will
have the site harrowed again. We still have t.o fert.ilize and
seed it. We do not. have any mare money in our current budget
to p~oceed any further. The seed alone will cast us
approximately $2,000. It was suggested that we send a note
to the Town Board requesting funds if they want the field
useable for 1994.

JUNE 1993 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 1993
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
May aotivities at the Senior Citizen Center inoluded the
regular sohedule of arts/orafts, oil painting, exeroise,
line danoing videos, oards and games. The oenter was olosed
on May 31 for Memorial Day.
May is Senior Citizen Month plus it is the month to honor
mothers on Mother's Day. For a Mother's Day oelebration,
the seniors were treated to baked ziti and meat balls. Eaoh
lady was presented a oarnation in honor of the day. On May
12, the seniors oelebrated Senior Citizen Month. Eaoh
senior was presented with a oarnation. We then had a
speoially deoorated oake and ooffee. Connie Smith was
invited to join us and to say a few works.
On May 25, the seniors went to the Fishkill Senior Center
to join them in a day of bingo. There were approximately
100 seniors who joined in for this wonderful day of fun.
The Fishkill seniors and their direotor, Susan Sohlaoh were
marvelous hosts. Seniors from both towns won prizes. It
was a great day! We all hope to have the opportunity to do
this again. In turn, I have invited the Fishkill seniors to
join us in a picnic sometime this summer. Susan Sohlaoh and
I will determine a date in the near future. All are looking
forward to another day with their new friends.
Diana Weibrecht from the Office of the Aging was at the
Center on May 6. The Heart Assoo. provided blood pressure
soreening on the 18th. And our monthly birthday party was
held on the 27th.
There was an average of 28 seniors per day at the Center.
There was an average of 16 seniors on Mondays. There are
184 seniors registered at the Center and 80 seniors on the
waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. Regina is baok to work, but has not resumed esoorting
the Town sponsored bus trips yet. Helen Sooha, one of our
seniors has esoorted the last two trips. She has done a
super job.
2. I now have two volunteers to help out at the Center:
Donna Vitti and Lori Reighn. Both women have been very
helpful and have helped Regina and Sue and have been
invaluable to me. They answer phones, do misoellaneous jobs
t.
for me such as packing, help with crafts, play bocce when
another person is needed and socialize with the seniors.
What did we do without this extra help?? They will both be
helping me with packing and moving everything over to
Schlauthaus as soon as it is cleaned and ready.
3. Peg and I went to a breakfast given by Leprechaun Tours
on May 26. They showed us their new 57 passenger bus which
we will be using for our Lake George trip as it will
accommodate the many seniors we had on our waiting list for
that trip. There was a presentation of different tours,
many of which are appropriate for seniors. We will be
getting prices and further information for our 1994
schedule. The opportunity to network with other senior
group leaders was very helpful. Those we spoke to also gave
us some new ideas and locations to put into our 1994 trip
schedule. There was no cost to us or to the Town for this
informational opportunity.
4. Disappointing news! The Chase Neighborhood Grant that
we applied for was denied.
5. The Senior Center is now getting baked goods donated
twice a week by BJ's Warehouse. A thank you to Jerry Allee,
manager has been sent.
6. In regard to our move to Schlathaus, Dial-a-Ride has
been notified and they will drop seniors there when we move.
Blood pressure screening and the Community Service worker
from the Office of the Aging will come to Schlathaus.
Exercise will remain at Town Hall. I may move one day a
week of exercise to Schlathaus after we move. I have
scheduled our first day at our new location to begin July
12. We will close the Center the Friday before and if
necessary the Thursday before this move to allow us to move
tables, chairs and all our "stuff."
7. June activities: We will go to Mariner's Harbor for a
combination Mother's Day and Father's Day luncheon on the
10th. On June 18, we will celebrate the 5th anniversary of
the opening of the Senior Citizen Center. The actual
anniversary is June 8. This will be a BIG barbeque with
lots of food, fun, music (we will have a musician>, raffle
prizes and lots more.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TO ALL YOU DADS!
HAPPY 5th ANNIVERSARY TO THE WAPPINGER 'SENIOR CENTERJ
Get ready for a jumpin' June, July and August. Now the
nice weather is here and time for some outdoor activity.
But, before we go outdoors, we will have a combination
Mother's Day and Father's Day luncheon at Mariner's Harbor
on June 10th. Many of you requested we dine here again, so
here it is! For those who do not drive, we will carpool as
we did last time. The cost for the lunch for current dues
paying members will be $9.50. You have a choice of the
Lobster Bake, Prime Ribs of Beef or Chicken Parmigiana. You
must sign up and pay by June 4th. Drivers with passengers
may meet at the Center. We will leave the Center at
approximately 11:15 a.m.
The Town of Wappinger Senior Citizen Center turns 5 years
old on June 8th. You know that calls for a celebration! I
am sure many of you were present at the opening day of the
Center. If you attended the June 8, 1988 opening, please
let me know. No special reason, just curious. Anyway, back
to the celebration. We will have an anniversary party and
barbeque on Friday, June 18th. You must sign up and get a
ticket if you are planning to attend. We will need some
salads and "fixings." Let me know what you will bring.
There will be a bocce and horseshoe tournament. So find
some partners and get a team together. You have 3 weeks to
practice. Prizes~for the winners! And keep those tickets
you receive when/yoh sign up--someone will win a prize!
Now to other Jane activities. For those of you going to
Atlantic City on June 8th, the bus leaves Town Hall at 6:30
a.m. Diana,Weibrecht will be at the Town Hall on Friday,
June 11. LOet, me know if you want to see her so I can set up
a time with her Exercise is cancelled on Thurs., June 10
(we're going to Mariner's Harbor). Blood pressure screening
is on Tues., June 15. Line dancing is cancelled June 18.

Our monthly birthday party will be on the 24th.
The Fishkill Senior Center invited our Center members to
join them for a Bingo Day on Tuesday, May 25. We all had a
great time and some of our seniors even won some prizes! I
have invited the Fishkill seniors to join us for a barbeque
this summer. Susan (Fishkill Director) and I will determine
a date for sometime in July or August. This will give us
the opportunity to reciprocate their generous hospitali~y.
Details and dates to be announced.
CENTER EXPANSION UPDATE! As I stated in last month's
newsletter--During the period of construction, the Center
will move to another location, the house at Schlauthaus Park
on Meyers Corners Rd. and All Angels Hill Rd. We will be
moving out of Town Hall in July. The Center will be closed
on Friday, July 9. We will reopen at Schlathaus on Monday,
July 12th. The Center hours will remain the same, Monday
through Friday; 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Exercise programs
will remain at the Town Hall in the large meeting room
unless otherwise specified. Did I hear a sigh? a groan? a
complaint? Oh well, the complaint jar is on my desk, just
drop in your quarter. It will make you feel better.
Actually, it is really nice at Schlauthaus Park. There are
trees and barbeque grills and several separate rooms. And
when we return to Town Hall after all is said and done, we
will have space to do more activities and room to move
around without bumping into someone.
WANTED! COMPLAINTS! We need more complaints so we can
fill that "Complaint Jar" on my desk. There is a charge of
250 per complaint, 500 per BIG complaint. Proceeds from
this "Complaint Jar" will be donated towards our Center
expansion and/or a new refrigerator and other new fixtures
needed for the Center. Time is running out! What is a
beautiful, big C~nter without a decent refrigerator? Now I
am not complainin~~ but "awe shucks!" Guess I have to drop
- /
my quarters int~th~t "jar" too, since I am rattling on so.
Anyway, just remember proceeds go for a good cause, so take
this in the spirit in which it is intended. However,
serious co~~laints WILL be considered and acted upon if
possible. And any other donation for this good cause will
be graciously accepted!
Anyone interested in joining a photo club, please let me
know. There was not enough interest in the swim program at
this time. If in the future, more seniors are interested,
we will try again. I am checking on a smaller bus for a
trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Several of you have
signed up for this. I will let you know if ,when and how
much as soon as I know. The trip will include the bus, a
visit to the museum, an explanation of the paintings and
other artworks plus lunch at a Manhattan restaurant. If you
have not signed up and are interested, please let me know.
Please note the Center will be closed Fri., July 2 and
Mon. July 5 for Independence Day!
For those paying dues by the month, June dues is $2.00.
