This was because before this can be done, it must f1rsL be sent to the Town Board for approval. OUTGOING LETTERS 1. CORRESPONDENCE A letter was received from Paul Lussier, Asst. Superintendent of Administration regarding the "no-fee use" for cross usage of facilities and voting equipment. To avoid confusion and misunderstanding, they were requesting a list of programs which we sponsor at the schools. This letter was answered by Mr. Reimer. A letter was received from Ken Hack, Race Director for the 15 Annual Dutchess County Classic to be held at Robinson Lane on September 19, 1993. In his letter, he requested information about the park i.e. key to gate, porta-johns, electric, dumpsters and garbage barrels. A letter was written to Mr. Hack answering these questions. Mr. Holt mentioned that Mr. Hack had called him this past Friday regarding specifics on the electric and water availability. He wants to be able to hook up 5 computers with printers and we are not sure that can be done using the one outlet outside the building. We are not sure we want him in the building especially if Little League has inventory inside. Mr. Holt and Mr. Ennesser will Recreation Minutes September 13, 1993 Page 2 go over to Robinson Lane and check out possibilities on Tuesday and Mr. Ennesser is scheduled to meet with Mr. Hack at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. A letter was received from Gary Mensching, President of the Town of Wappinger Little League, thanking us for the support and interest in the 1993 Junior League All Star Eastern Regionals which they hosted in August. He also mentioned that they were hoping to host the Eastern Regionals again in 1994. It was suggested that this letter be forwarded to the Town Board. Mr. Holt will write a covering letter. A letter was received from Marcella Ahne requesting a refund for the Summer Program. She signed up her child and he was unable to attend because of personal reasons. She wrote "because his mom and dad are going thru a divorce, the money could be used toward school items." After a discussion, it was decided that the $20.00 refund be given. A letter was received from Norman Whittemore stating that he participated in the tennis lessons that were given during August at the Pye Lane Courts. He wanted to thank the Town for providing this service and for the instructors Barry Casowitz and Jim Allen. He said that they were exceedingly knowledgeable, patient and helpful in showing the proper techniques and that their love for the sport was contagious. We received a letter from Bill Pauldine for the use of the Tennis Courts on Pye Lane for the Roy C. Ketcham Girls Tennis Squad on August 31st. The Tennis Team wanted to start using the courts immediately from 10:00 a.m. to noon and when school starts from 3:30 to 5:30. After calls that date to Mr. Reimer and Mr.Miller approval was given to Mr. Pauldine to start immediately. Approval was received from Sheafe Road School for the Adult Aerobics on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 -8:00 starting October 13th and for the Boys and Girls Basketball program on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon starting January 8th and going to March 26th. Approval was received from the Wappinger Jr. High for the use of their gym on Wednesdays starting October 1 to March 23 for adult basketball from 6:30 to 9:30. It was also noted that November 24th would be a Superintendents Day and therefore the building would not be open. A second letter was received from the Wappinger Jr. High stating that they were unable to honor our request for the use of the gym on Tuesdays for our Adult Volleyball Program. The letter stated that the gym had been assigned to another organization. They also stated that it was their policy to honor applications on a first come-first serve basis. The Commission had a problem with this since we have held this program at that site for m~ny years. Mr. Reimer was asked to contact Mr. DeFillippo to discuss the situatlon and then possibly a letter will be written to the school and a copy sent to Mr. Marmello. We received an application for employment from a John A DiMillo of Fayetteville, N.Y.for an entry level position with public or private recreational organizations in administration and management. A letter will be forwarded to him and his resume will be kept on file. Recreation Minutes September 13, 1993 Page 3 SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT Mrs. DeLisa, although away on vacation, left a senior report on the activities of the senior center for the month of August. This report was given to all members and is attached to these minutes. DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Reimer reported the following: 1. He is working on the Fall and Winter programs - Aerobics, Boys and Girls Basketball at Sheafe Road School, Basketball at the Jr. High and he is still waiting for approval from Myers Corners School on the volleyball program. 2. The Schlathaus Race is scheduled for October 2nd with a 5K race and a 1 mile race for the children. We will need a P.O. for the trophies and also for the pumpkins and cider from Diesings. 3. He requested that maintenance check the sign at Schlathaus. There is graffiti on the one by All Angels Hill Road and also some loose screws. 4. The bus for the Radio City Show is full. Maybe next year we could try for a weekend with 2 buses. 5. A discussion took place regarding the entertainment for the Christmas Party. Although the "Dickens Band" was good, we thought that we needed a change. We need to get the audience involved. Mr. Reimer will check with Encore Productions and Mrs. Korz will speak with the music teacher at Myers. 6. He will try to get the West Point Concert Band for a concert in April 1994. LIGHTS AT ROBINSON LANE Mr. Friedman mentioned that he was talking with Bill Verlin and he had told him that the ballfield at Stewart has been dismantled except for the poles and lights. Maybe we could look into this. Mr Holt mentioned that he still plans on talking with Mr. Eastwood from Central Hudson to find out more about his plan for electric at Robinson Lane. HALLOWEEN Mrs. Korz mentioned that she has received donations for prizes from Pizza Hut, Parties Plus, Carvel, Dunkin Donuts, Wendy's, McDonalds, Ben & Jerry's and Hoe Bowl Holiday. It was noted that the request to Supervisor Smith to open an account at Party City was not approved so we will have to find some other ~ ~ Recreation Minutes September 13, 1993 Page 4 way to do the Haunted House. It was suggested that the Party start at 2:00 instead of 1:00 and that we have the house open between 1 - 2 and 4 -5. Mrs. Korz will discuss this further with Miss Gutzler. ROBINSON LANE Mr. Miller, Mr. Friedman, Mr. Vorndran and Mr. Foster, Highway Superintendent met at Robinson Lane recently to dig some test holes for water. Two possible alternatives for mak water available for the fields were discussed. The first, of which most were opposed to because of the liability with fencing, soil mining etc was to dig a pond. The suggestion made by Mr. Friedman was to install a tank with a submersible pump since we would only doing one field at a time. This suggestion was felt to be the best way to go and Mr. Holt asked Mr. Miller if he could get some prices. Mr. Miller mentioned that he thought that Mr. Vorndram had already done this. Mr. Holt will speak with Mr. Vorndran to see what information he has. Little League is running a program for 12-13-and 14 year aIds using the 3 big fields. They are there from 1 - 6 on Saturdays. We are opening the rest rooms but the store is not open. We have to look at the roofs on the dugouts and the store. They need to be repaired or replaced. We have the new gate and we should look at how we are going to set up the parking before this is installed. Mr. Holt will meet with Mr. Miller and Mr. Vorndran to go over this. BOAT RAMP Mr. Ennesser is looking at White's Marina to see if he could get some floating docks for Chelsea. He said that White's changes some of their docks every year and maybe if we were able to get some, we could repair them and expand our area. SPOOK HILL We have painted the handball court and we will try and repair the roof on the building. The graffiti still has to be removed from the bridge. MARTZ FIELD This area was painted today, the dugouts and building. Tomorrow the inside of the building will be painted and the shelves fixed. The pressure hose was used to clean both of the rest rooms and they they will be painted and fixed up. All of the fencing will be checked out and fixed where we can fix it. " ~ Recreation Minutes September 13, 1993 Page 5 ~ ~ AIRPORT PARK/ROCKINGHAM/SOCCER Mr. Rider and Mr. Vorndran met with the soccer representatives and engineer at Airport Park to discuss the laying out of the fields. Mr. Rider mentioned that on Sunday a group from soccer started putting in the posts on on the side by the tree line and are planning to return on Tuesday afternoon to finish laying out the other fields. Mr. Holt mentioned that we have gone to the Town Board for approval for funds and P.O.'s and this was okayed at their August 23rd meeting. We now have to power rake it,get all the stones out, grade, seed and roll it. We are now waiting for it to get dry enough for us to get our equipment in. There is a lot of work that has to be done and done very quickly as the growing season is upon us. The soccer engineer, Mr. Rabbit, has layed out the parking area and everyone is worried about people driving over the fields. Soccer has indicated that they would split the cost of putting in a fence with the Town. It is estimated that it would take about 1000 ft. of 4' fence. Soccer has indicated that they will help get some estimates. Mr. Friedman suggested that if we were putting in the fence just to deter motorcycles that we put in posts every 2 -3 feet and not put in the fabric. Mr. Rider said that the chain link would look better and would catch the balls. Soccer has indicated that they would like to speak with Herb Redl to see if they could get some rocks placed on the left hand side of the Park to deter motorcycles. Mr. Holt indicated that Mr. Kennedy would be coming into the Town for his $3,000. He also indicated that Supervisor Smith was to increase that amount to $3,500. this year and th~the $500. goes to the recreation fees for the soccer camp that they held at Rockingham. Mr. Rider mentioned that the road into the Rockingham complex needs to be paved. Mr. Holt said that paving was out for this year but we would see if we could patch it. The grass in the corner of the field is high. Mr. Holt said that it would be mowed. Soccer has requested that we make a kickwall against the backstop. Mr. Holt mentioned that one of the backstops is going to be removed but Mr. Rider said it would be against the one furthest back. All they are asking is for a wooden wall approximately 4' high for the kids to practice kicking the ball against. No one had any problems with this. Soccer requested that we get them some more marking chalk for the fall season. Mrs. Roe stated that we already have a P.O. so we will order it and have it picked up by Friday. They also requested that we purchase some paint- 12 cases of white and 6 of orange. After a discussion, it was decided that cost- wise it was cheaper to go with the lime and to order 10 cases of orange for the perpendicular field lines. . . Recreation Minutes September 13, 1993 Page 6 MONTFORT ROAD BUILDING Mr. Holt mentioned that we have received approval for the building at Montfort Road. The plans for the building call for one 50' x 28'. We will have a lot of work to do to get this done. First we will have to get Airport Park done. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Mr. Holt mentioned the following: 1. The Senior Christmas Dinner scheduled for December 7th is coming along. Letters have gone out. 2. We have not heard anything further on the dirt at Castle Point. 3. No further news on the White's Corner Property. 4. He received a brochure from the American Heart Association and they are presenting a program "Coaching with Heart". This is a half day conference held September 29,1993 at the I.B.M. Conference Center. The cost is $15.00. Mr. Ennesser and Mr. Rider expressed an interest in attending. Mrs. Roe will prepare a letter for the Town Board and speak with Supervisor Smith since the money has to be in prior to the actual meeting. 5. We received a plan for the promotion of ice skating. Mr. Miller stated that in reading the report he questioned where the land would come from since the Town doesn't have land. We are not sure what we are being asked to do. 6. Grass is growing again and the guys are busy mowing. 7. WE have to check with Supervisor Smith regarding the Chelsea Beach area so that we can approve/deny the Heritage Grant that we received. 8. The meeting was changed to the 2nd Tuesday of each month. The October meeting will be on the 12th. The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 on a motion by Mr. Friedman seconded by Mr. Ennesser. Peggy Roe Secretary r. ~'iI~ J'dr/N Hi! Well, I am relaxing in the cool Florida sun. After the heat the last few weeks, anywhere is cooler! Onto business cause I know you all want to go home: 1. Tues. Sept. 14- I have spoken to Peg so she can remind someone--I need someone to open Schlathaus before 9:30a.m. Regina will be escorting a trip, and I will still be relaxing and enjoying! Therefore, neither of us can open. Sue (other craft teacher> will be there for the seniors, she but needs to get in the door. Also, I will have her lock the door when she leaves, but need someone to come and check and set alarm. Thank you. 2. I want to thank ALL the maintenance guys for all their help moving, fixing, bringing picnic table etc. Thanks John for everything yOU do and getting the guys at the right place at the right times. 3. The men spotted the pool table in the garage & are really enjoying it. It is a little cluttered but that doesn't stop them! 4. Re: The Halloween party. The seniors will still be at Schlathaus but I see no problem being used as the HAUNTED HOUSE. We could close early on Friday if necessary. Monday we can help clean up. I am sure it will be no problem just let me know what.s happening. 5. As noted in my report, the Office of Aging is having a picnic for wapp. seniors at Schlathaus on sept 28. I do not know much more than the date at this time. Raiph, you may want to speak to Connie about this. She did mention a need for tables. what about port-john's? What if it rains? Connie mentioned there would be about 300 seniors? I am closing the center for the day. I will help in anyway I can when I return. 6. Just a note about Ron Broady. He has been at Schlathaus almost everyday and has been really great! The seniors love him. He brings out chairs for them, brings apples, tomatoes, etc. for them. Plus he has been a great help fixing just little things like putting a hook and eye lock on the bathroom door. I really appreciate all these little things he does and so do all the seniors. Just thought yOU would like know this. DA TiS ALL FOLKS!! WILL BE BACK ON MONDA Y, SEPT. 20!!!! SEPTEMBER 1993 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 1993 SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER August activities at the Senior Citizen Center included the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, exercise, line dancing, videos, cards and games. However, all these activities were interrupted Aug. 10-13 while the Center moved its location to Schlathaus park. The Center reopened at this new location on Mon. Aug. 16. To welcome the Seniors to their new temporary Center, we had lots of food, cakes, watermelon and coffee. On Aug. 19, the Seniors hosted a picnic for the Fishkill Senior Center. Town supervisors, Connie Smith and Joan Pagones were invited and attended. Over a hundred seniors from our Center and Fishkill enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, salads and watermelon for our first ever intermunicipal picnic. Our own Wappinger "Swingin' Seniors" performed their line dances. They are really getting good! Raffle prizes were awarded to lucky ticket holders. Most of the seniors are enjoying their new environment. Card players now have their own room to use so they do not disturb those doing crafts. The men are enjoying bocce on the lawns. And they were quick to -spot the poole table in the garage. Thanks to maintenance for moving a few things around so the men can play poole. There are a few problems. The light in the rooms is not sufficient. Many elderly have eyesight difficulties and the insufficient light makes it difficult for them to do their needlework. The only other problem so far has been the excessive heat wave. On Fri., the 27th, one of the seniors almost passed out from the heat. First aid measures were taken, and then she was taken home. She is okay. I have suggested to all, that if the temperatures are in the 90's, it would be best for them to stay home. Hopefully, these temperatures will not reoccur making this unnecessary. Other than these few problems, everything is going very well. Many of the seniors sit outside under the pines. Others are enjoying the separate rooms to do different activities. Diana Weibrecht from the Office of the Aging was at Town Hall on the 5th. Blood pressure soreening was held at Schlathaus on the 17th. The trip to the Aqua Turf Club on the 25th was very successful. Again, the heat deterred some of the activity, but reports are the place and food were wonderful. Our monthly birthday party was held on the 26th. Starting this month, any senior who turns 80, 85, 90, 95 or 100+ will be specially honored. This month two of our seniors turned 80. Attendance is down since our move to Schlathaus. Few of those who go to Town Hall to exercise are coming over to join activities. The heat has kept many seniors away. There was an average of 24 seniors per day at the Center. There are 184 seniors registered and 91 seniors on the waiting list. ITEMS TO BE NOTED: 1. We have sent out approximately 200 requests for donations for the Elks Club Christmas party on Dec. 7. If necessary, more will be sent out early Oct. 2. The Office of the Aging is sponsoring a picnic at Schlathaus for area seniors on September 28. I have no further information on this at this time. 3. The trip to Pomona is scheduled for Sept. 14. 4. The Center will hold their annual Craft Fair at Schlathaus this year on Oct. 14 and 15th. More details next month. PARTY! ! ! ! ! ~~~~I~~~~ SE~IO~ ~~~S By Kathi DeLisa, Direotor SEPTEMBER 1993 Well, we survived our move (I think)! First I want to thank you all for your patienoe and oooperation during these past few weeks as we moved and ohanged thi~gs around. Parking is sorting itself out, but please remember the spaoes by the house and direotly aoross from the house are for those who have diffioulty walking. So please leave those spaoes available for handioapped parking. Unfortunately, we were not able to provide valet parking, so if "your" spot is taken, please take another parking spot. There is parking at the entranoe on All Angels Hill Rd. and also parking behind the house aoross from Meadowbrook Farms. Anyway, I think we are all adjusting and enjoying the pleasant, olean atmosphere. Many of you are enjoying the beautiful outdoors and fresh air. I oan't help but smile (and sometimes sing) as I look out the windows and watoh you sitting under the pine trees, working on orafts or just ohatting with your friends. And of oourse many of you men are enjoying boooe. And it didn't take you long to spot that pool table in the garage! Enjoy! For those of you who exeroise and line danoe at Town Hall, you are weloome to Sohlathaus and join us in arts/crafts, videos, coffee and cookies, and other aotivities after exercise olasses. And don't forget blood pressure soreening on the 21st is at Sohlathaus. Also Diana from the Offioe of the Aging will be at Schlathaus on the 9th. And our birthday party will be on the 30th. Thank you for oooperating and cleaning up after yourselves. Keep up the good work. I really appreoiate your oooperation. For those who do not know of the rules read on: If you have lunch garbage, cups or other debris, please put it in the wastebasket. If you use something, put it back where it belongs. If you dirty something, olean it up. The kitohen must be kept clean AT ALL TIMES! Do not expect someone else to do this for you. We all need to work together and each do their share instead of leaving all the work to just a few. I hope you will vo~untarily clean up after yourself. Lots of picnics: The Rotary Club is giving their annual picnic for Wappinger Seniors on Sunday, Sept. 19. at the K of C at 1:00 p.m. You must sign up and receive a ~ ticket to attend. For those who are going, please remember, this is given by members of Rotary. They w9rk hard to provide a nice day for you. Most of them are professionals and businessmen, donating their Sunday to you. Please treat them with respect. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, the Office of the Aging is sponsoring a picnic for all Wappinger AND. area seniors. The picnic will be held at Schlathaus Park. (That's where we are! The Center will not be open for usual business) At the time of this printing, I do not have any further info on this picnic except the date. I will tell you more when I know more. It's Craft Fair Time!! Some changes this year! Our Fair will be held two days, Oct. 14 & Oct 15 from 10:00-2:00. Because of the renovations at Town Hall, we will have our Fair at Schlathaus. We will NOT be serving lunch this year. If the weather permits, we can even put a table or two of crafts outside to help attract attention. Anne Peters will once again be selling raffle tickets for the big raffle. Raffle prizes will include 2 handmade afghans, a hand crocheted lace table topper, a handmade shawl and a hand decorated wreath. Tickets are $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. We are asking EACH of you to take at least six raffle tickets. ($5.00 worth.) You can buy them for yourself or sell them to friends and family. If each person helps, it will ensure a successful raffle. REMEMBER, PROCEEDS OF THE RAFFLE AND THE CRAFT FAIR GO TOWARDS LUNCHEONS AND PARTIES. IF YOU ENJOY THESE EXTRAS, PLEASE DO YOUR PART!!! See Anne or me for raffle tickets. In the meantime, tell everyone you know to come to our wonderful Craft Fair. We will have our Book Sale, Granny's Attic, Bake Sale, Raffles and of course Crafts. And thank you for your help and cooperation. We will need homemade baked goods for our bake sale. Please let me know what you will bake for the sale. Since the Fair is for two days, please let me know which day you are bringing your baked goods or if you can bring something both days. Wow! That would be Super! Once again, remember proceeds go for activities for you. Please do your share so we can make this our biggest and best craft fair ever!! Last month when we celebrated the month's birthdays, we ~ also celebrated those who turned 80 years. I hope to continue this each month with just a little extra something for those who turn 80 or 85 or 90 or 95 or 100+. Many of you did not put your birth year on your registration form. Therefore, I will not know when you will turn one of these marvelous ages. If you will be 80, 85,90,95 or 100+ please mention it to me so we can celebrate with you. Help! I am looking for someone who will volunteer t~ be our "Sunshine Person." This person would be responsible for sending get well cards to anyone out sick, a "thinking of you" card to those who have moved out of the area or into Adult Homes. Anyone interested, please see me. And thank you! _ We are still looking for anyone interested in joining a photo club. Please see me if you are interested. In regard to the Metropolitan Museum, I have spoken to Dag at Canterbury Tours. He is looking into a smaller bus that we can afford. I will keep all of you who are interested informed. For those paying dues by the month, September dues is $2.00. A big hug to all of you!!!!! P.S. The Complaint Jar moved to Schlathaus with us. Tee Hee! So if you have a complaint just drop in your quarter. It's a great feeling! I don't want to complain, but I sure have heard complaints now and then, but did not hear the clink of the quarter in the "jar." There is a charge of 250 per complaint, 500 per BIG complaint.
