JANUARY 16, 1996
NEXT MEETING FEBRUARY 6, 1996 AT 7:30 AT SCHLATHAUS PARK
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Committee was held
January 16, 1996 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess
County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J. Holt. Others
present were Kathi DeLisa, Senior Citizen Director, Bernie Reimer, Recreation Director, and
Committee Members James Chappas, Joseph Ennesser, Ronald Friedman, Ellen Korz, and
Stephen Miller.
The minutes of the December 12, 1995 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr.
Friedman seconded by Mr. Ennesser with the following correction: Under Safety Page 3 - Mr.
Ennesser mentioned that the safety check at Robinson Lane was completed and that he has started
Spook Hill.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from John McCarthy, Wappinger Jr. High Assistant Principal
stating that due to a change in their Music Department schedule, it was necessary to cancel our use
of the cafeteria for aerobics on January 9, 1996. Mrs. Roe has informed the director of this.
A memo was received from Betsy Brockway, Executive Director of the Dutchess
County Youth Bureau regarding the 1995 Annual Reports and the 1996 Youth Bureau Contracts.
In her letter she mentioned that the 1995 Annual Reports have not been received but that they will
be forwarded to us as soon as they are received. The letter also mentioned that the 1996 County
Budget was approved by the County Legislature and County Executive with the grant allocations
recommended by the Youth Bureau. She also indicated that all activities and dates will be
dependent on the passage of the 1996 State budget. She also enclosed a calendar listing their
activities and grant announcements.
A memo was received from June Ellen Cioppa, Youth Programs Analyst enclosing
the N.Y.S. Division for Youth Program Annual Report which is to be completed and returned to
the Youth Bureau by Friday, January 26,1996.
A copy of a memo sent to the Town Board from Supervisor Smith in regard to theVpayment to Teny Glass for work done on the Recreation Loader in October 1995. In her memo
she sites several reasons why the repair work should not be paid for by the Town.

A letter was received from the Morie Company stating that effective January 1,
1996, their contract hauler will increase freight rates.
Thank you notes were received from Mary & Bob Cardascia, Arthur and Irene
Bayer, Lill and Bill Owen and Thomas and Mary McEniff for the wonderful Senior Christmas
Party which was held at the Elks on December 12th. These thank you's were given to Mr. Miller
to take to the Elks Lodge so that they can share in the good words.
OUTGOING CORRESPONDENCE
I. Thank you letters were written to Exalted Ruler Bob Acquinita and Tom Blasetti
of the Wappinger Elks thanking them for their assistance and s-p.pport in providing the holiday
party for the Seniors on December 12th. Also letters were sent to Jim Zasso of Rite Aid Pharmacy,
and to all of the other supporters of the Party. Letters were also sent to the Editors of the Southern
Dutchess News and the Poughkeepsie Journal.
2. The claim forms for the Recreation 1995 YDDP Programs were forwarded to
Dutchess County Youth Bureau to the attention of Ms. Jane LaLone.
3. A memo was forwarded to Comptroller Ann Buckley with a check in the
amount of $39.43 representing a refund for the summer bus transportation. This came about when
Mr. Miller questioned several of the bus runs on the schedule we received. We received this
check instead of having to pay the school an additional $4+.
4. Memos were sent to the Town Board to request P.O.'s for the following work to
be done and the funds to come from the 1995 budget. 1. A P.O. to A. &~. Electric in the amount
of$I,125.00 to insta1150 amp electric service along with the necessary flood lights at the pole bam
on Montfort Road. 2. A P.O. to A. & B. Electric in the amount of$I,950.00 to insta112 poles with
two 400 watt metal halide lights on each pole for additional lighting at Schlathaus Park. 3. A P.O.
to A-I Fence Company in the amount of $2,765.00 to install fencing at field #7 (R-4) at Robinson
Lane. All of the above requests were approved at the Town Board meeting on December 27,
1995.
5. A memo was sent to Donald Close, Zoning Administrator requesting approval to
replace the existing 4 x 8 ft signs at Schlathaus Park with new 5 x 8 ft. signs. Mr. Close has
requested a drawing of the proposed signs. Mr. Holt will also write a letter to the Town Board
regarding the replacement of these signs.
6. A thank you letter to Mrs. Sarah Dobbins for the donation of the small decorated
Christmas trees to the Senior Center.

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the Senior activities for the month of
December. This report is attached to these minutes.
RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer reported on the following winter programs:
Men's Basketball on Wednesday night at the Wappinger Jr. High has had a very
low registration and we are not sure why this has come about. In previous years we have had to
turn people away. Mr. Reimer is working with Mr. Caprara regarding this.
Women's aerobics is going well and the registration is good.
Volleyball at Myers has a large turnout and Mr. Reimer mentioned that one of the
players had questioned the fees and the fact that they have to pay three times. Mr. Reimer
explained that there are 3 separate programs the Winter program from January to April/May, the
summer outdoor program which runs from June to September, and the Fall program which runs
from October to December. We felt that $15.00 for 3 months of play really isn't that much.
At the Saturday a.m. Basketball program only 24 children were registered and the
Gymnastic program had a medium registration. We attribute some of this low registration to the
fact that a lot of the people do not get the Southern Dutchess News. Mrs. Roe indicated that she
has received several phone calls during the week regarding this registration and there will be quite
a few registering late.
A discussion took place regarding the advertising of the programs and it was
suggested that possibly we look into preparing a booklet which details our programs. Other
suggestions were to use the Poughkeepsie Journal and possibly the Community Calendar on Cable
T.V.
Mr. Reimer mentioned that he is working on the 1996 Summer Program. He is
working on the bus schedule early to help alleviate the problems which we had last year. He will
have an estimate of the mileage before we go into the program. He will look into setting the
registration dates. Mr. Reimer also indicated that we will also need a new Summer Director as he
has spoken to Amy Russell and she will not be coming back. Applications are coming in now for
the summer staff.
Mr. Reimer has not yet looked in to Eisenhower Hall but he will check into this
soon. He has been working on the concert schedule and he questioned whether we would want to
have a concert on Thursday, July 4th. The consensus was that we go ahead with the concert on
that date. Mr. Reimer will work on this. It was suggested that we have a big band type of music

instead of a Country trio etc.
The Spring Spectacular trip still has a couple of openings. Mr. Reimer will still
advertise in the Southern Dutchess News. Tickets will be given out on the bus the day of the trip.
Reminder letters will be sent a few weeks before the trip.
Mr. Holt indicated that he has spoken to Supervisor Smith regarding the proposed
babysitting course and the over 55 softball league. Since these are new programs the proposals
have to be sent to the Town Board for their approval. As soon as we have all the information, a
letter will be sent with the details of both programs. As we see it now we don't feel either program
will financially effect the Town.
SOCCER
Mr. Chappas mentioned that soccer has held a tournament at Vassar and at the ffiM
County Club. Mr. Holt asked if soccer holds monthly meeting and Mr. Chappas said that they
did. Mr. Holt asked Mr. Chappas to have soccer do some planning for the year ahead and let us
know what their needs are for the year for paint, chalk dust etc. They need to do more planning -
they can't call us and want something the next week.
SAFETY
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has acquired approximately 50 ft of 4" canvas fire
hose. This hose will be placed on top of the fence on the wings on the Senior League Field. It
will be sliced and placed over the exposed sharp edges and riveted on.
ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Friedman mentioned that Little League has announced their registration dates
for this year and they were in the Southern Dutchess News. The dates are January 27th, February
lOth and 24th from 10 to 4 at the Masonic Lodge on Myers Comers Road.
Mr. Holt asked Mr. Friedman to contact either Little League or Dr. Manassar
regarding the construction of the third batting cage.
Mr. Holt also mentioned that Little League has to clean up the store before they
open up in the Spring. Little League has said that they will paint the inside of the building and put
down a new tile floor. Mr. Holt has had Mr. Tompkins look into the tile. We want to see what is
going down and make sure that it is the right type. Mr. Friedman mentioned that he thought

maybe the present floor could be stripped. Maybe we should look into this before we go out and
purchase new tile. Mr. Ennesser asked about the replacement of the roofs on the dugouts and Mr.
Holt said the guys will do this in the Spring.
SUMMER PROGRAM
Mr. Reimer indicated that he is working on the schedules for the summer program
but we really need to make plans on how we will be running the swim program this year. As you
recall, the Town Board has approved the Youth Bureau Funding to run a free swim program. We
now have to determine how this will be done since we can only take 55 children to the swim site
and we will have to have adequate supervision. Previously we use to use the playground
counselors for some of this supervision but if the program is open to residents who are not in the
playground it will pose additional supervision problems. All members were asked to come back
with some ideas for running this program.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt reported the following:
1. The meeting dates for the next two months are as follows: February 6th and
March 12th.
2. Mr. Holt asked Mr. Friedman ifhe would be acting chairman from February 7th
to March 11 tho
3. A year end report is going to be prepared addressing the activity for the
recreation department for 1995. This report will be forwarded to all the Town Board Members
addressing all of the things that we do.
4. He reported that the child that was burned at the Christmas Tree Lighting
Ceremony is okay.
5. We need 'No Softball Playing' signs to be ordered and placed on a couple of the
fields at Robinson Lane.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 p.m. on a motion by Mr. Miller seconded by
Mr. Chappas.

JANUARY 1996 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER, 1995
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
December activities at the Senior Citizen center included
the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, exercise,
line dancing, photo club, videos, bingo, puzzles, cards and
games. The center was Christmas Day and the 26th.
On Dec. 5th, 25 seniors went to the Bardavon to see a
"Lawererice welk" show. The Bardavon provided bus
transportation to this wonderful event.
Dec. 8th was the beginning of the Christmas party season.
108 seniors enjoyed the Center Christmas party at Villa
Borghese. Santa stopped in for a visit and to hand out
gifts to all. Music was by Johnny Dell.
On the 12th, more than 175 seniors enjoyed a holiday
party at the Elks Lodge. This party is sponsored by the
Recreation Commission in conjunction with the Elks Lodge and
is funded by business persons and professionals in the
community. The event was once again a great success. Music
was by Nite Life with Johnny Dell. santa appeared bearing
gifts for all. Recreation has received several thank you
notes as well as numerous phone calls praising this event
and thanking us for providing such a gala affair.
The center's "Little Christmas" party was held for two
days because of inclement weather. There was bagels, egg
nog, cheese & crackers and other wonderful goodies. Tried a
musical grab bag this year. It was fun, but most decided
they perferred the conventional grab bag. WJHS 8th grade
chorus cancelled their appearance due to bad weather.
There are 198 seniors registered at the center and 183 on
the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. 1995 was a busy year for the Center. Lots of events,
parties and happy times.

JANUARY 1996
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! May you all have a happy and healthy
New Year filled with joy, fun and lots of parties!
Regina, Sue and I would like to thank all of you for your
generous Christmas gifts. We truly appreciate all you do
for us. Thank you and a big hug to all of you!!!!!!
Need a break from parties? Never? Well, just a little
rest while the weather settles down and then away we'll go
again! We'll start the party year slow and end with another
whirlwind.
On Jan. 8, we will celebrate Elvis's birthday with a
little rock and roll. You're welcome to bring in your
favorite rock and roll tapes. Let's make the Town Hall
shake, rattle and ROLL! Then on the 12th, we will have our
annual HAT DAY. Come to the center with a silly, pretty,
droopy or goofy hat. You may even win a prize for the best.
So look in your closet, drawers, hat box or where ever and
find or better yet make the best hat of the day and have
fun!
Then on the 25th, we will have CLASH DAY! What is Clash
Day? Today is the day to wear clothes that clash! Plaids
and stripes? Red and orange? Crazy clothes? Got the idea?
Prizes for the clashiest! Anyway, we can have some fun and
some food too?
Now for other January news...blood pressure screening is
Jan. 10th. Birthdays will be celebrated on Fri. Jan. 26th.
Remember, those with birthdays are asked to bring a cake for
the party. We will all help you celebrate. The Center is
closed on the 1st New Year's Day,and the 15th, Martin Luther
King's birthday.
Bingo days are Wed. the 17th, 31st and Thurs. the 4th,
11th,& 25th. Please note exercise is cancelled this winter
if the schools are closed due to inclement weather.
The WALKING CLUB continues....We have a few new walkers.

Welcome to our Club!! If you haven't started walking and
would like to join our walking club, let me know and I'll
put your name on the chart and explain the rules. What do
you think about a teeshirt or sweatshirt with Wappinger
Senior Walking Club on it? Let me know!
Coming in February! 1996 is LEAP YEAR and that gives us
a good reason for a party. Traditionally, leap year is the
year Sadie Hawkins asks a beau for a date? for marriage? We
don't have to do that, but we can have a Sadie Hawkins Day
Country Hoe Down and Square Dance. Tentative date will be
February 29th at the Holiday Inn. So keep the date open and
I will let you know definitely at a later date.
Watch for coming attractions in future newsletters! Such
as Chinese luncheon, Bowling party, Senior Citizen Month,
Easter Egg Hunt, etc.
If anyone is interested in helping to plan different
Center events and help with the planning, please let me
know. Suggestions are always welcome. As you know, our
Center is really too small to do big parties or events. But
with some good ideas and help from you, we can do things
outside the Center or plan smaller events for inside the
Center. I welcome any ideas and help you can give. Maybe
we can have party committees, idea committees or whatever.
Please give me some feed back on this. Thank you.
The Wappinger Lions Club needs old eyeglasses or hearing
aids. If you have any you no longer want or need, bring
them to the Center. I will see to it that they are given to
the Lions Club.
Enjoy the poem by Sue Bush. The Creative Corner was
started so you all have the opportunity to share your
creative writing, thoughts, drawing or cartoon. Come on
Seniors, let's see what your thoughts are! Don't be shy!
Share your thoughts and creativity with us!!!!I will include
these in the newsletter. We have many talented seniors at
the Center. Some do crafts, some paint or draw, some write
poetry and/or stories, some have wonderful and creative
ideas. You may submit your "writing" or even a drawing or
cartoon to me at any time. Please do not submit preprinted
articles etc. from other sources. I am sure we will all
enjoy reading or seeing the creativity of our fellow
seniors.
In regard to paying dues. Many of you are now paying
your dues on a yearly basis and for that I thank you. This
has made bookkeeping much easier and efficient. Many have
chosen to do this as they cannot be at the Center every week

and want to participate in our special events. Yearly dues
is $25.00. Many of you pay on a monthly basis and that too
makes it easier to keep track of. However, there are still
few who insist on paying on a weekly basis. As of this
month, those paying on a weekly basis will be asked to pay
$1.00 a week instead of the previous 50~ a week. The reason
for this is fairness. There are many who pay monthly or
yearly and do not come every week, but still pay their dues.
Therefore it is only fair for those who pay weekly to
compensate for the weeks they are not there. However, if
this is a financial hardship for anyone, please see me. For
those paying dues by the month, Jan. dues is $2.50. Those
on the waiting list are welcome to pay dues. This entitles
you to join our "out of Center" activities at a reduced
cost.

CREATIVE CORNER
SANTA IS COMING TO TOWN

You better be good so the saying goes, Bah Humbug
and all that goes with it.
I get a heartburn every time I think of going
Christmas shopping. My dear husband thinks that I
go berserk at this time of the year. I just can't
resist all the beautiful goodies
Last year, I made a resolution to put a limit on
the things to buy. This way, it would be less for
me to take back to the store for exchanges. Each
year I find it much harder to battle the people on
the exchange lines. Everyone has the same idea.
We spend so much time selecting gifts that we
like, that we forget to buy what they would like.
And as a result we find ourselves back on the same
line year after year. And boy, oh boy, does that
bug my ever loving spouse. I can't say that I
blame him. Last year we took our lunch and dinner
with us as we waited on line for the better part
of the day. I missed all the day time stories
that day. I didn't know if Molly had her baby, if
Jeff left his wife after thirty years of marriage
for his young housekeeper. I found myself so
frustrated that I was not there for Margo's
wedding, that I came down with a sickening
headache.
I vowed that the same thing would not happen again
this year. I think that I have it solved. I will
put all the gifts in one bag and let them pick out
their gifts and have on all the boxes no refunds
or exchanges, all gifts final, just for kicks.
To all you dear senior citizens, have a very
Healthy and Happy New Year!
