Silvestri CORRESPONDENCE A letter of resignation was received from Lois (Sue) Parliman effective May 18, 1996. A memo was received from Supervisor Smith with regard to our request for a variance for a sign at Schlathaus Park. The current sign at the park is in terrible condition with the plastic runners cracked and therefore the letters do not stay on the board. A request was sent for a variance for a 40 sq. ft. sign. We felt that this is still one way to get messages to the Town residents regarding upcoming events in the Town i.e. baseball, soccer, football sign ups, Town Concerts, playground information, school functions, etc. We feel that since a lot of the residents are not now receiving the Southern Dutchess News that this was one way to get messages of upcoming events to the public. Supervisor Smith indicated in her memo that she felt that our request for a variance for a sign at Schlathaus Park should not be allowed. She indicated that the Town departments should set the example for the community to follow regulations. At this point we do not know how we should proceed with this- get a price to fix up what we now have or remove them completely. A request was received from Cub Scout Park 52 for the use of Castle Point Recreation Area on June 8, 1996. This request was approved and was given to Mr. Miller to follow up. A letter was received from Friends of Parks, Recreation & Conservation in Dutchess, Inc. This group is offering grants to fund projects related to parks, recreation or conservation. Any government entity or not-for-profit organization serving Dutchess County, NY is eligible to submit a proposal. The grants are available for up to $300., the total of all grants will not exceed $1,800. The grant funds have been accumulated through general operations and would be eligible as matching funds. There is no formal proposal package or present format for submitting a request although they do request that it be written in English and be somewhere between one paragraph and three pages in length. It was suggested that Mr. Reimer work up a proposal for one of the special events for the summer playground program. Deadline for the requests is June 28th. A ward decisions will be made on or before July 28th. A list of the Summer Music concerts of the various local Recreation Departments for 1996 has been received. This list was complied by Richard Rose of the Town of Poughkeepsie Recreation Department and included concerts scheduled by Taconic Region, Towns of East Fishkill, Fishkill, Hyde Park, LaGrange, Wappinger, Washington and Poughkeepsie. A thank you letter was received from Diane Quint, Community Director of the March of Dimes for the use of Castle Point on Sunday, April 28th for their March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation walk. She indicated that Castle Point is such a beautiful spot. A letter was received from the Dutchess County Health Department regarding the presentation of a Drowning Prevention Seminar for the lifeguard at supervised swimming pools and bathing beaches. They have scheduled two seminars and the dates are May 24th at 10:30 and June 6th at 3:30 p.m. Although these might be informative sessions, the dates and times are not good for our employees. Approval was received from the Van Wyck Junior High School for the use of their gym, lockers and restrooms for the week of July 15th thru July 19th (9:30 a.m. thru 12:00 p.m.) for the Boys and Girls Basketball Camp. The letter also listed several guidelines that must be adhered to. This was given to Mr. Reimer for his information A letter was received from New Holland indicating that the order for our new Ford tractor, Model 3930, was placed on April 14, 1996 and that delivery is approximately 120 days. They indicated that the delivering dealer will be Pine Plains Ford Tractor in Pine Plains, N.Y. A copy of a letter from Roe Movers which was addressed to the Town Board was given to the Recreation Committee for their information. In this letter concern was expressed regarding the soccer facility on Airport Drive. They feel that the parking arrangements and the proximity of the parking lot to the road have created a potential hazard to the children playing on and around the field. This letter was discussed that the April Town Board Meeting. The application, check and insurance certificate has been received from the John Dore, Sunday Morning League. RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT Mr. Reimer mentioned that Jennifer Fisher has accepted the position as Summer Director. As of today, the staff for the playgrounds is completed but it seems to change day to day. Mr. Reimer is now working on scheduling the counselors for the RTE and CPR recertification. The dates for the RTE Course has been set for June 3, 4, and 5th from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and on Saturday June 8th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mr. Reimer mentioned that some lady had questioned him about doing background checks on the counselors. This will be discussed at a later meeting. A calendar of the trips was handed out to all committee members. The only additional trips will be a few camp to camp trips which the counselors will request after our staff meeting on June 6. The tennis clinics are being scheduled. The adult clinic will be starting on May 21 st and classes are scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.to 10 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for four weeks. The first summer clinic will be starting on June 25th again on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be 3 morning sessions for children and 3 evening sessions for adults. Registration for the tennis clinics are on May 20 and May 28 from 7 to 9 in the evening and on June 4 and 5 from 9:30 to 12:00 and from 2:00 to 3:30. Mrs. Korz will purchase the tennis balls for the clinics. The instructor is Barry Casowitz. Mr. Reimer indicated that there are still openings for the Summer Basketball Clinic which will be held at Van Wyck from July 15th to July 19th from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Mr. Reimer mentioned that Mrs. Roe brought back a sample reusable I.D. bracelet from the N.Y.S. Recreation and Parks Conference in Syracuse. He mentioned that he has contacted Anaconda Kaye about purchasing them or getting them donated and they did not know anything about them. It was suggested that we order approximately 500 of the bracelets from Larry Fox. The bracelets will not be imprinted. Mrs. Roe will check on the price for the bracelet with nothing imprinted on it. The bracelet is a form of identi~cation for swim groups which is a requirement mandated by the Board of Health. ROBINSON LANE Mr. Friedman mentioned that the fence at R-4 has been completed but that the batting cage is not finished. The poles are in but that is all. Mr. Holt mentioned that the bottoms on the backstops at R-3 and R-4 (Field 7 and 8) are raised and should be fixed before someone gets an arm caught. QUIET ACRES Mrs. Korz mentioned that the basketball hoop needs to be fixed. Mrs. Roe indicated that the neighbor on the left of the roadway has put in a large above the ground pool and has had some septic work done. In order to gain access to his property, he was given permission to use our access road. This area has not been cleaned up and there is some concern that because all the brush has now been removed between the two properties that the children might go on his property. Mr. Holt mentioned that he will look this over. CONFERENCE Miss Gutzler mentioned that she had spoken to several people at the Conference in Syracuse and has received a proposal for a recreation software program. At the next meeting she will have further information on this. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Mr. Holt mentioned that following: 1. We have received permission to hire the new part time maintenance person. He has been contacted today and hopefully will start tomorrow. 2. The P.O. has been sent to the Town Board for approval to purchase the new clay for 3 of the fields at Robinson Lane. Little League has indicated that if we do these three fields that they will do the rest of the fields. We will also put some clay at Martz and Castle Point Fields. 3. Mike Silvestri ofD. Silvestri Son Inc. has indicated that the light at Schlathaus for the War Memorial will be completed by May 21 st. We will also be working on the lights on the other side of the park. 4. Mr. Foster still has not done the blacktop work at Martz field that was promised last year in trade for the flail mower. 5. Mr. Hurneston has not completed the work on the parking area at Robinson Lane. 6. Mr. Holt was told that the Town will be bringing in fill to the Castle Point recreation area starting on July 1st. If this is the case, we might have a problem and will have to see about keeping the children away from the roadway. The electric work has not been completed at Castle Point but we are hoping that it will be completed before the playground opens. 7. We haven't heard anything about the camera that was purchased last year. Since this is the prime time for vandalism, we hope that it is still working. 8. We would like to do some fencing work around the barn especially between the Fulton residence and our property. Mr. Fulton has more and more vehicles and trailers on his property and it is a mess. 9. Mr. Holt indicated that he still intends to open up a right of way into Briar Lane. 10. There seems to be a problem with the Rymer Property so we will not be able to get in there to do any work. 11. We have been at the Angelbrook Recreation Area and found that the area neighbors have been dumping on the Town property and the area is a mess. It was noted that we will have to clean up the area and make it safe. 12. Mr. Holt mentioned that we need to consider putting a grass vacuum in the 1997 budget. We need a fairly large one. MEADOWOOD SUBDIVISION The above subdivision plat was sent to us by the Planning Board and was reviewed by the members. The primary concern that the Recreation Committee had was with the lack of an access road. The Recreation Committee would like to see an access road off of Old Hopewell Road as they were concerned with additional traffic going through Regency Drive. The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 p.m. on a motion by Miss Gutzler seconded by Mrs Korz. Peggy Roe Secretary '. MAY 1996 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 1996 SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER APril activities at the Senior citizen center included the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, exercise, line dancing, photo club, videos, bingo, puzzles, cards and games. The Center was closed April 5 for Good Friday. 60 Seniors were at the center on April 3rd for our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Actually, sticks painted the color of the eggs were hidden. Seniors "hunted" the sticks and then turned them in for an egg the same color. There was something for everyone. Each egg was filled with candy and small prizes. several eggs had a numbered paper amid the candy. The numbers corresponded with the different prizes. Also had an Easter Bonnet Parade plus prizes for the best bonnets. Blood pressure screening was provided by the Heart Assoc. on the 10th. The monthly birthday party was held on the 26th. A special birthday party was held for our Craft teacher Sue parliman and also for Peggy Roe. The trip to Foxwood was very successful. We were able to accommodate those who had been on the waiting list for this trip by using a second bus. This is a very popular trip. Sue parliman, one of our craft teachers will be resigning on May 17th, due to family illness. 2. I am working on a report of the NY state Parks and Reacreation Conference for your information. Ronnie Badowski, our volunteer, has offered to lead a Creative Writing Class on "Writing Your Memoirs" and other creative writings. Ronnie has been writing for several years as a hobby as well as semi-professionally. "Writing Your Memoirs" can be fun, can be shared with children and/or grandchildren or just for yourself and for the fun of it. Think of it as Telling a Story. Remember when you told your children a story at bedtime? We all have a story to tell. So think about it. Ronnie will help you put those thoughts, those memories on paper. Let Ronnie or me know if you are interested in this, we will set a day and time for a class. Our Stories, Our Lives! What a legacy for your grandchildren. GO FOR IT! You may notice some changes in our Craft Program. Regina, Sue and I are reorganizing and streamlining the craft program. We hope as we reorganize, the program will be more efficient, more exciting and also make crafts easier and more fun to do. Notice the current projects now on the door to the store room. These will be the items available to make. These will change as new projects are ready. Old projects will be taken down. This has a two fold purpose. First, you will be able to see what is available and help you to choose what you would like to do. Second, it will make preparation easier for Regina and Sue. For 'those- projects that cannot hang properly on the door, they will be displayed on the table. Yes, there are some items that will be available to make at all times such as the crosses, hugs, etc. However, we will continue to bring new projects in so you can enjoy making and/or learning new crafts. We are open to any of your suggestions, criticism or help so feel free to speak up. The WALKING CLUB continues especially now that the weather is better for us fair weather walkers. We have a few new walkers. Welcome to our Club!! If you haven't started walking and would like to join our walking club, let me know and I'll put your name on the chart and explain the rules. ' 3 -< (J ll?/!-) ... _. . If anyone is interested in helping to plan different Center events and help with the planning, please let me know. Suggestions are always welcome. As you know, our Center is really too small to do big parties or events. But with some good ideas and help from you, we can do things outside the Center or plan smaller events for inside the Center. I welcome any ideas and help you can give. Maybe we can have party committees, idea committees or whatever. Please give me some feed back on this. Thank you. The Wappinger Lions Club needs old eyeglasses or hearing aids. If you have any you no longer want or need, bring them to the Center. I will see to it that they are given to the Lions Club. Enjoy the poem by Sue Bush. This poem is in honor or the one year anniversary of the Oklahoma Bombing. The Creative Corner was started so you all have the opportunity to share your creative writing, thoughts, drawing or cartoon. Come on Seniors, let's see what your thoughts are! Don't be shy! Share your thoughts and creativity with us!!!!I will include these in the newsletter. We have many talented seniors at the Center. Some do crafts, some paint or draw, some write poetry and/or stories, some have wonderful and creative ideas. You may submit your "writing" or even a drawing or cartoon to me at any time. Please do not submit preprinted articles etc. from other sources. I am sure we will all enjoy reading or seeing the creativity of our fellow seniors. In regard to paying dues. Many of you are now paying your dues on a yearly basis and for that I thank you. This has made bookkeeping much easier and efficient. Many have chosen to do this as they cannot be at the Center every week and want to participate in our special events. Yearly dues is $25.00. Many of you pay on a monthly basis and that too makes it easier to keep track of. However, there are still few who insist on paying on a weekly basis. Those paying on a weekly basis will be asked to pay $1.00 a week' instead of the previous 500 a week. The reason for this is fairness. There are many who pay monthly or yearly and do not come every week, but still pay their dues. However, if this is a financial hardship for anyone, please see me. For those paying dues by the month, May dues is $2.00. Those on the waiting list are welcome to pay dues. This entitles you to join our "out of Center" activities at a reduced cost. A big hug to you all! Smile!!! 4 , . '. 4 .
