OCTOBER 7, 1996
NEXT MEETING 5:00 P.M. NOVEMBER 6,1996 AT SCHLATHAUS PARK
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Committee was held
October 7, 1996 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County,
New York.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph 1. Holt. Others
present were Kathi DeLisa, Senior Citizen Director, Bernie Reimer, Recreation Director,
Committee Members James Chappas, Joseph Ennesser, Ronald Friedman, Ellen Korz and Stephen
Miller.
The minutes of the September 10, 1996 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr.
Friedman seconded by Mr. Miller with the addition of .Irving. with Mr. Miller's name on page 7
since there are a number of Mr. Millers associated with Recreation.
CORRESPONDENCE
Approval was received from Myers Comers School for the use of their facilities as
a rain site for the Halloween Party on October 27th.
Approval was received from Myers Comers School for the use of their facilities for
the Tuesday Night Volleyball program from 10/1/96 to 5/13/96 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
A letter was received from A. Kersting, Vice President ofT.O.W. Little League
stating that they will once again be running a "Fall Ball Program". The program is scheduled to
run from September 14 and will go through mid-November, weather permitting. They are
scheduled to play games on Saturdays having practice on weekdays at Robinson Lane and Martz
Field. Mr. Chappas informed Little League that they must send in a formal request for the use of
the fields in both Spring and Fall.
Approval was received from Myers Comers School for the use of their facilities for
the Boys and Girls Gymnastic program scheduled to start Saturday, January 11, 1997 and running
until May 10, 1997.
Information was received on a Greenway Project grant. This information was
given to Mr. Ennesser for input. It was our first impression that we would not qualify.
Approval was received from Wappinger Junior High for the use of their facilities
for the Wednesday Night Men's Basketball program. The program will start Oct. 2, 1996 and run

until February 26, 1997 from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
A letter was received from the Wappingers Central School District Transportation
Department indicating the balance due for the summerrecreation runs as $2,147.00. They also
advised us that for the summer of 1997, due to expanded requirements with their Special
Education transportation that they will be able to provide transportation to the town recreation
departments only between the hours of9:30 a.m. and 1 :30 p.m. Mr. Friedman suggested that
maybe we should contact other school districts i.e. Arlington or Beacon to see if they could do the
transportation.
A request was received from Bucky Davis, of the Dutchess Debs for the use of two
fields at Robinson Lane on Sundays through October 27, 1996. The first date being this Sunday,
October 13th. This request was approved as long as Little League is not using the fields. Mr.
Friedman will check and get back with Mr. Chappas or Mrs. Roe. Mr. Miller noted that we
should have a request form filled out and make sure we have a copy of their insurance on file.
Mr. Chappas will take care of this. Mr. Holt also made note that the rest rooms will be open and
that they should use common sense when using the facilities.
OUTGOING LETTERS
1. Thank you to Jack Barmello of the Hoe Bowl Holiday for hosting the Senior Bowling Party.
2. Specs for the new sign for Schlathaus Park were sent to the following: Gloede Signs, Superior
Sign Service, Hughes Signs, Bridge City Signs, Brighton Ventures, Sign Language, The Sign
Shop, Expanded Services Products.
3. Publicity for the Senior Citizen Craft fair to be held October 25th at the Town Hall was sent to
WHVW, Pennysaver, Poughkeepsie Journal, WHUD, Southern Dutchess News, SCAN,
WCNY, WCZX, WKIP, WEOK/WPDH.
4. A letter was sent to Tim Fisher giving him permission to use Robinson Lane on Sept. 14th.
5. Memo was sent to the Town Board Members regarding the Application for the Boat Ramp
Grant which was denied.
6. Letter was sent to Supervisor Smith regarding the Airport Park Improvements to be made by
Soccer i.e. phone and electricity to the building. We stated that we had received a request for
approval for this work to be done and we had no problem with it as long as they went through
all the proper channels and received all the required permits.

8. A letter of thanks was sent to John Sorrentino for his talk on dental and denture care for seniors.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the Senior Activities for the month of
September. This report is attached to these minutes. She also mentioned that the Senior Craft Fair
is on October 25th and all are invited. She mentioned that she would need all available tables that
morning.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer mentioned that we were able to salvage the men's basketball program at
the Wappinger Junior High. We use to have the program at 6:30 to 9:00 but every year the Jr.
High gives us a new time. This year they said that it wouldn't be available for our use until 8:00
and that we could use it until 9:30. As stated before Mark Caprara was not able to run the program
but Tom Fisher was available. Mr. Caprara is helping Tom for the first few weeks until he is
comfortable with the program. Mr. Fisher is also able to run our winter boys and girls program.
We will need to get someone else to help him.
Aerobics started at the Junior High on October 1st with 25 people registering. Mr.
Reimer was unable to make the second night so we are not sure how many more signed up. Mr.
Reimer mentioned that "DJ" runs the program well and is liked by all participants.
Volleyball with instructor Walter Leczinski is at Myers on Tuesday nights. It was
noted that Myers is very cooperative and all they ask is that if we move any equipment that it is
replaced before we leave.
Both Art Goldner and Brenda Peura will be back to run the boys and girls
gymnastic program in January.
The Schlathaus Race went well on October 5th. It is a well run race, not as big as
the one in September at Robinson Lane but a nice race.
Mr. Reimer has contacted the Evergreen Chorus for entertainment for the Christmas
Tree Lighting at Schlathaus Park on December 8th. They will be glad to do it and he will verify
the fee with them. Mr. Reimer mentioned that if it should rain on that date, they might not be
available the following week. They again would like to have access to the building around 4:00
p.m. to warm up and change. It was mentioned that we will need to have mics available and Mr.
Ennesser volunteered to check to see ifhe could find some stands.

HALLOWEEN
We still have to verify the times for the Haunted House. Mrs. Korz will call Miss
Gutzler to verify them. It was our understanding that they might be Saturday from 2 - 5 and
Sunday from 12 -2. Everyone was asked to commit some time to be there to help. Mrs. Korz
will also find out when she will need help decorating the house. If necessary we will have one of
the maintenance men help during the week. Mrs. Korz mentioned that she was able to get in
touch with McDonalds plus she was able to get a few more prizes from Subway, and Taco Bell.
She said that she called Moovies and she is still following up on that. She mentioned that she
ordered 15 dozen donuts, 23 gallons of cider and 7 bushels apples and called the witches for
judging. It was suggested that we watch the weather for the weekend and if the forecast is for
nice weather maybe we should call in an order a few more donuts. Mrs. Korz said that she would
call McDonalds and try and get the gifts from them earlier so we will know what we have to give
out. We also have make sure that gifts are given to only those in costume.
SOCCER/HANDICAPPED ACCESSIBLE
Mr. Chapp as asked if the overpasses were fixed at Airport Park. We will check on
this. Mr. Holt asked Mr. Friedman to meet with him and Mr. Tompkins at Airport Park to go over
the handicapped improvements that are to be done there. They will meet at 2:00 p.m. on
Thursday, October lOth. There was a discussion on how to make the parks handicapped
accessible. Mr. Friedman mentioned that at Robinson Lane all we might need to do is remove on
of the posts by the end of the building and paint lines and install some signs.
DOCKS
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that the docks could come out the last week in October.
He also mentioned that if we go ahead with the plan for the new docks that they could be done in
approximately 8 weeks. There was a discussion on the debris that collects at the boat ramp and
Mr. Holt asked Mr. Ennesser if there might be something that we could do to keep the debris from
coming in. Mr. Ennesser said that this was a problem for all the marinas and he did not know of
any solution to the problem. Mr. Holt mentioned that we take at least one truck load of debris
away a week and there is no place to dump it.
SIGNS FOR SCHLA THAUS
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that we have received two (2) quotes back on the new sign
for Schlathaus Park. The sign would be made of wood uprights pressure treated with the rest of
aluminum. The lettering will be 6" letters the same as we are using presently. It was suggested
that maybe we should look into the price for some new letters. We will wait a few more days to
see if we get in any new bids and then a letter will be forwarded to the Town Board for their

October meeting. We would like to get this work done as soon as possible. There are so many
opportunities for messages on the board.
LITTLE LEAGUE/ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Friedman mentioned that the grass is coming in really good where they planted
it by R-3 and 4. He also mentioned that Little League will do something for both the Halloween
and Christmas Party. They will probably do popcorn for the Christmas party but they are not sure
of what they will do for Halloween yet. Mr. Friedman mentioned that the new bleachers have
been put together and delivered to the field. We will make sure that the store is clean before it is
closed for the season.
CASTLE POINT.
Mr. Friedman asked if we had heard anything regarding the $10,000. Grant for
Castle Point and was told that there is no new information. The last we knew was that one of the
residents on River Road had not given their approval for the poles to be installed. It is our
understanding that it is in the hands of the Attorney to the Town.
SPOOK HILL
Mr. Miller mentioned that he reviewed the information received from Mr. Joseph
Maggio, resident of Town regarding the handball improvements at Spook Hill. He said that we
should resurface some of it and paint the lines. In the meantime we could fill the cracks and holes.
He said that he wouldn't recommend the fencing or lights for the court. It was mentioned that
maybe we should look into cleaning the underbrush and making a picnic area. Another
suggestion for this area is to fix the parking area and in compliance with the handicapped rules and
regulations we should make the gate wider. It was also suggested that a higher fence be placed
around the area. It seems that the people sit and climb on the 4' fence. It is easier to climb over
a 4' fence than to walk around and go in a gate. Mr. Holt mentioned that the building and the roof
has been spray painted. The maintenance guys will paint the roof. Joel Petrus of the Town Hall
has tried to remove the paint from the building but there are a few spots that would not come off.
It was suggested that maybe he should write a letter to the vendor and tell them that some of the
paint would not come off and ask if there were any suggestions for cleaning the building.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Mr. Holt mentioned that the road at Rockingham will be paved by the Highway
Dept. but that we will be paying for it.
The letter regarding the so called charges made by the Department of Health will be
sent to Mr. Zoller. The letter was written by Mr. Reimer and Mr. Holt.

The gifts have been received for the Children's Christmas Party and also the Senior
Citizen Party at the Villa.
Mr. Holt mentioned that Mr. Vorndran is retiring from his maintenance position.
It was suggested that we plan a retirement dinner for him in the near future and invite the Town
Board members, the Highway Department members and several of his mends. It was suggested
that the dinner be held the first week in November. Mrs. Roe will be working on this.
The fields are in excellent condition. The new tractor is in but we could really use a
finishing mower. It would really help with the mowing.
The slide is in at Quiet Acres.
Mr. Holt will be requesting that the maintenance men put in an appearance at the
Pond on Joan Lane at least once a week just so that the neighbors are reminded that the property
belongs to the Town.
Over the winter the kinds used the bridge that Mr. Tompkins built last year at
Reese Park for firewood. Because of the high water this past winter a lot of the soil was washed
away and it is even hard to get to the bridge.
Weare having a picnic for the maintenance guys on October 18th. Supervisor
Smith will be invited. '
Little League will be having their elections in November.
The electricity has been approved for Airport Park and Mrs. Roe has spoken with
Central Hudson officials regarding this. The work should be completed soon.
The meeting was adjourned at 8: 1 0 p.m. on a motion by Mr. Friedman seconded by
Mr. Ennesser.

OCTOBER 1996 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 1996
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
September activities at the Senior Citizen Center included the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil
painting, exercise, line dancing, photo club, videos, bingo, puzzles, creative writing, cards and
games. The Center was closed Sept. 2nd for Labor Day.
On September 16th over 100 seniors from three Centers (Wappinger, Zion Church and Fishkill)
enjoyed a bowling party at the Holiday Hoebowl in Wappinger. There was coffee and danish for a
breakfast treat and pizza and soda for lunch. Seniors bowled three games. It was a great day!!!!
Jim Torisi from NY Life Ins. Spoke to the seniors on Medigap Insurance and Long Term Care
Insurance on the 5th. The Blood pressure screening was provided by the Heart Assoc. On the
11th.
Dr. Sorrentino, a dentist spoke to the seniors on dental and denture care on the 26th. Our
monthly birthday party was held on the 25th. A special party for Regina Waldron, our craft
teacher was held on Sept. 19th. We even managed to surprise her this year.
Our annual Walking Club luncheon was held at Hudson's Ribs and Fish on the 27th. Al Laurino
was awarded a stein engraved with the year and and number of miles he walked this year. Al
walked over 295 miles. Three other seniors were presented with a small gift for their .high
mileage.. All were given a certificate stating the year and number of miles they walked this year.
The trip to Mystic Seaport was a big success. So far all the Senior trips have had great reviews.
Many have commented on how enjoyable Regina makes the bus trip as well as looking after
everyone.
There are 199 members registered at the Center and 186 on the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. The Center's annual Craft Fair is scheduled for Oct. 25th. This will be held in the large meeting
room. We will need maintenance to bring ALL the tables available at 8:30a.m. We can also use
some help moving all the crafts, books and granny's attic items to the large room. The Fair is from
10a.m. to 2p.m. All are welcome to stop in and enjoy!
2. Requests for donations for the Elks Christmas Party have been mailed. The response has been
pretty good so far. We can still use more donations to make this successful. We have a girl scout
troop willing to make centerpieces for the tables.
3. Coming in October is Fire Prevention program, a Brown Bag Medicine check by Mr. Khoury,
a pharmacist from Rite Aid, a Flu Clinic on the 30th and of course our annual Halloween Party!

BOO! Scared you didn't 11 Well, it is the season for
ghosts and goblins, witches and black cats and princesses
and princes. It's time for colorful trees and falling
leaves. Time for apples and cider. Time for cooler air and
our annual Craft Fair. Yes, October is here and a busy
month it is! So read on for ALL the happenings!
The Craft Fair will be held on Fri., Oct. 25th in the
large meeting room from 10a.m. to 2p.m. Regina and Linda
will be giving you some holiday crafts for Halloween,
Thanksgiving and Christmas to work on. Plus there are some
projects I am asking them to make more of and others that we
need no more of. They will also be asking you to work on
specific projects or to finish up projects. So'thank you in
advance for your cooperation. As you all know there is a
lot to pulling this together and we couldn't do it without
all of you who help so much. Last year was a great success!
Let's make this an even better year!!!! Suggestions are
welcome anytime!
Raffle tickets are now available. If you did not get
yours or want more, see me. Please return your raffle stubs
before Oct. 25th. Once again, we are asking each of you to
take a minimum of 5 tickets to sell. It takes ALL OF YOU to
help make this a success. Raffle tickets are the one thing
that EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE.,IN. Others also contribute by
their crafts, crocheting, knitting, baked goods, cleaning
up, etc. besides buying or selling their 5 ra~fle tickets.
Remember, craft sales plus your dues make- it possible for
luncheons, parties and much more. Please do your part!!

We also need items for the Bake Sale. Please let Mary
Egan, Kay Andrews or me know if you can bring something.
Many of the Craft Fair customers look forward to the baked
goods each year. For Granny's Attic, you can bring items in

mile. Just mark the number of times you walk around, I will
convert it to miles later. Walking is considered one of the
best physical exercises you can do for your health. It can
help reduce blood pressure, regulate insulin for diabetics,
keep your heart healthier and so much more. We are setting
a new goal for walkers for 1997. Each walker will attempt
to do 10 more miles this year than last year. If you are
just starting, you can make at least 10 miles your goal.
That is only 60 times around the building in a year or 5
times around a month. 1997 will be the year of the Serious
Walker! The new year for the Walking Club begins Oct. 1st.
Only those who participate in walking can enjoy our Award
Luncheon.
And Congratulations to our award winning oil painting
class and Larry Petersen too. Larry entered the scale model
category and won 3 ribbons and our oil painters brought 11
ribbons for their work in the Dutchess Co. Fair art show.
Wow!
The Creative Writing Class began in June. It is now held
on scheduled Thursdays at 9:30a.m. Check the calendar.
There is no pressure, no grades, just interesting and fun.
Try it! Ronnie Badowski has offered to lead this Creative
Writing Class. It includes short stories, or poetry or even
"Writing Your Memoirs." Ronnie has been writing for several
years as a hobby as well as semi-professionally. Creative
writing can be fun. Ronnie can help you organize your
thoughts for writing. Remember when you told your children
a story at bedtime? We all have a story to tell. It can be
a true story or fictitious. So think about it. Ronnie will
help you put your thoughts on paper. If you are interested
in this let me know or come in on a Thursday morn and try
it! GO FOR IT!
WANTED! Suggestions for our Thanksgiving Luncheon.
Remember the restuarant must be able to accommodate about 85
or more people. Best Western? Mamma Marissa? Holiday Inn?
Dutchess Diner? Rolling Rock? Help! And mark your
calendar for Dec. 6th. Santa has a party planned at Villa
Borgheses. More next month!
The Wappinger Lions Club needs old eyeglasses or hearing
aids. If you have any you no Alonger want or need, bring
them to the Center. I will see to it that they are given to
the Lions Club.
Enjoy the poem by Sue Bush. The Creative Corner was
started so you all have the opportunity to share your
creative writing, thoughts, drawing or cartoon. Come on
