NOVEMBER 6, 1996
NEXT MEETING 5:30 P.M. DECEMBER 3, 1996 AT SCHLATHAUS PARK
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Committee was held
November 6, 1996 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess
County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 5:00 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J. Holt. Others
present were Bernie Reimer, Recreation Director, Committee Members James Chapp as, Ronald
Friedman and Stephen Miller.
The minutes of the October 7, 1996 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr.
Friedman seconded by Mr. Chappas.
CORRESPONDENCE
A copy of the Youth Bureau Fall 1996 newsletter was received. In it was
notification of various staff changes, program notes, and contract agency information.
A letter of thanks was received from Tim Fisher, President of the National Adult
Baseball Association. In his letter he expressed his appreciation for the Town's support of the
League. He also indicated that he would be interested in using the fields in 1997 and asked to be
notified when we start assigning fields.
A resume was received from Stephen G. Smith of 90 Stoneykill Road. He recently
received his bachelor's degree from Cortland College with majors in Recreation and Leisure
Studies. He is now looking for a recreational position. It was suggested that a letter be sent to Mr.
Smith thanking him for his interest but notifying him that we have nothing available.
OUTGOING LETTERS
1. Thank you to Guy Barton, Principal of Evans School for Halloween Surprises for Senior
Center.
2. Thank you to Lucy Doroni for efforts at Robinson Lane - Last day to be November 11 tho
3. Letter to George Stafford sending a proposal for Second Round Grants for Environmental
Protection Waterfront Grant. Same as we sent in April for purchase of docks.

senior citizens.

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa was unable to attend the meeting but sent a report for the month of
October. This report is attached to these minutes.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. Reimer mentioned that he has confirmed the fee of $200.00 for the Evergreen
Chorus for the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Mr. Holt mentioned that Mr. Ennesser has
been working on the sound system and has purchased 2 mics and stands.
The bus trip to Radio City Music Hall on November ] 6th is full. The escort on the
trip will be Mrs. DeLisa. The next trip is scheduled for December 11 tho
He mentioned that we are foregoing the West Point Concert for the Spring of 1997
but that he has written a letter to West Point stating that we will be skipping a year for the Spring
concert but are interested in having the Jazz Knights do a summer concert at Schlathaus Park.
Tom Fisher is doing a good job with the Adult Basketball Program. Mark Caprara
has filled in for him when he is unable to make it.
Mr. Reimer noted that the new signs are in at Schlathaus and asked if we had
purchased any new letters. He made note that we could really use more letters as we are short
many letters. We will look into the cost of another set. Mr. Reimer asked that if we purchase new
ones that we get fiberglass or plastic letters. He said that the metal ones are too hard to use.
AIRPORT PARK
Mr. Chappas asked about the progress on the handicapped work that was to be
done at Airport Park and Mr. Holt said that nothing has been done to date. He said that the
estimate that we received for the work was around $7,500. He mentioned to Mr. Friedman that
he would like to discuss this project further and check with the Highway Dept. to see if they could
help us in any way. We are estimating blacktop work of about 20 x 60 and we will have to widen
the gate to accommodate a wheelchair.

Spring.
Mr. Holt asked Mr. Chappas to find out when soccer will be starting up in the
ROBINSON LANE/LITTLE LEAGUE
Mr. Friedman mentioned that there wasn't anything new at Robinson Lane other
than Little League has rebuilt Holt Field. Mr. Holt mentioned that it is their intention to rebuild
each field. They have indicated that they will need help with the clay when they do the fields.
With the new Little League Board, we hope that communication is a little better.
Mr. Holt mentioned that the Smith Family will be steam cleaning the concession stand and has
asked us for help in getting rid of the garbage. They will be starting from scratch, taking down
what they can, cleaning it and painting.
SPOOK HILL
Mr. Miller mentioned that he has turned in his recommendations for Spook Hill
Park for the immediate future and the near future. Mr. Holt mentioned that the pea gravel work
has been completed at Spook Hill. The maintenance men have worked on the roof to clean it up
and Joel Petrus has worked on the building a couple of times to clean the building but all of the
graffiti has not come ofT. It was suggested that maybe he should write a letter to the paint
company and see if they have any suggestions on how to clean it. Mr. Holt mentioned that we will
be painting lines on the handball court.
1997 BUDGET
Mr. Holt mentioned that he had a meeting with the Town Board (excluding
Supervisor Smith) for the purpose of reviewing the 1997 Town Recreation Budget. The main
purpose of the meeting was that they wanted money from our proposed plan. As the discussion
ended they have removed $7,000. from the line item for fencing for the barn on Montfort Road.
We had that in the budget as a safety concern rather than a cosmetic concern. There are a number
of kids that cut through the back of the barn on their way to Montfort Road and Pye Lane and in
going through the area could vandalize the area. We have a lot of equipment and supplies in the
bam and adjoining area and are concerned that someone could be hurt. They also took $9,000.
from the A-711OA budget. They did not specify from what line item just from the bottom line.
We have to make the decision from where. History shows that we usually do underrun our budget
but in 1997 we surely won't underrun it giving back as much to the budget.
PEA GRA VEL WORK
Mr. Holt mentioned that the pea gravel work has been completed at Quiet Acres
and Spook Hill. The maintenance guys are hoping to do Rockingham and Martz Field in the next

couple of weeks.
CHRISTMAS
We have received approval to purchase Christmas tree lights. Last year when the
tree came down so many times most of the lights and wires were broken.
The Elks Senior Christmas Dinner is scheduled for December 12th at 12:30. The
party shapes up to be good if not better than before. We recently heard from another wine dealer
in the area and he is going to give us case of wine and 2 gift certificates to raffle. We have a lot of
other raffle prizes to be given away during the dinner. Rite Aid last year gave a bag of goodies to
each person attending has decided this year to give three $25.00 gift certificates to be raffled off.
We have also received many other nice swprises. Johnny Dell will provide the music again this
year. Tomorrow morning we will be signing up the 195 people to go to the party. Phone
reservations will be taken starting at 10:00 a.m. but may be limited because of the people who
come down to register in person. Other parties scheduled are the Senior Center party at the Villa
Borghese on December 6th and the Town Tree Lighting on December 8th. Mr. Friedman
mentioned that Little League will be at the Tree Lighting and will give out popcorn. Mr. Chappas
said that Soccer will probably be there and he said that he will remind them. Mr. Holt has taken
the Santa Suit to be cleaned and Mr. Friedman will see that it gets to Mr. Fisher to try on. If it does
not fit Mr. Friedman will try to get someone else.
CHELSEA BOAT RAMP
When Mr. Holt met with the Town Board regarding the 1997 budget they brought
up the situation of the Boat Ramp. We had $6,000. to go along with the grant money and the
Town money to get the new docks as proposed by Mr. Ennesser. We did not get the grant. We
then went to the Town Board for approval to use Park Land Fund monies for this project and since
we had not heard anything Mr. Holt questioned them about this. Mrs. Visconti said that the Town
Board did not have any funds for the project. Mr. Holt mentioned that they should not take the
$6,000. from the budget because the docks that were taken out this year are in very bad shape.
The Town Board mentioned that they would look at the Parkland Fund. Mr.Holt said that there
should be about $157,000. in the fund but both Mrs. Visconti and Mr. Valdati said that it was only
$50,000. They said that they paid $100,000. out of Parkland for the Soccer work at Airport Park.
Mr. Holt mentioned that it would be nice if we would be able to get a balance for that fund at
regular intervals. It was noted that we feel that we should be notified when the monies are
received in the fund and when funds are spent. Mr. Friedman asked if anything has been done
about changing the recreation schedule and increasing the fees. Mr. Holt said that the Town
Board agreed that the fees should be increased and asked us to submit a plan.

SCHLATHAUS PARK
Mr. Holt mentioned that vandals ripped the railings off the stage over the weekend
and got into the electric box. This has been fixed. When the guys were in the house today to clean
up from the haunted house the water was found to be terrible. The smell was really overpowering.
They called Camo and they came to fix the problem. They said that they would be in once at
month to check the water. We were also told that we should run it more often. During the winter
the guys will be doing some clean up work in the house.
BARN
The Town Board approved the purchase of doors for the lean to building at the
bam. Dutchess Overhead has received the job and should install the doors in approximately 3
weeks. Now that Mr. Vorndran has retired the camper will not be parked by the bam and we will
loose some of the security it provided. Many people thought that someone was always there
during the summer for security purposes and with the fencing being taken from the budget we will
be more vulnerable.
CASTLE POINT
Mr. Friedman asked about the progress on the C. D. Funding for the Handicapped
Rest Rooms and Mr. Holt said that getting approval for the installation of the electric poles is still in
the hands of the Attorney. He also advised the Commission that the Town expected to go out to
bid in the Spring for the construction of the building.
HALLOWEEN
The Halloween Party went well and Mr. Holt thanked everyone who helped.
Special thanks will be sent to the four kids who helped with the Haunted. House. They were very
good. We also want to thank Kathi DeLisa and Ron Friedman for helping with the Haunted
House on Sunday. Special thanks also to Barbara Gutzler for all the preparations for the haunted
house. It was really super and we received many great comments. Also thanks to Ellen Korz for
all the foot work for the preparation of the party in obtaining the many gifts that we received from
the local businesses. She did a great job and we know that she worried about McDonalds not
coming though with the Happy Meals. We were thrilled when Grimace arrived that day with the
boxes of little gifts to be given to the children. We also want to thank the Seniors for the great job
they did on decorating the bags that we gave to the children. Some of the drawings were just
super. The day was warm and there were a lot of children attending. Everyone enjoyed the day
and the judges (Connie Smith, Elaine Snowden and Sylvia Holt) did a terrific job picking the
winners. Each year this job gets harder and harder.

NOVEMBER 1996 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 1996
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
October activities at the Senior Citizen Center included
the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, photo
club, exercise, line dancing, videos, bingo, puzzles,
creative writing, cards and games. The Center was closed on
Columbus Day.
It was a busy month. On Oct. 9th Rob Soto from
Hughsonville Fire Dept spoke to the seniors on Fire
Prevention for the elderly. On the 17th and the 22nd Sam
Khoury a Pharmacist from Rite Aid was at the Center to
provide a "Brown Bag Medicine" check. The seniors brought
their medicines in the brown bag provided. Mr. Khoury and
other pharmacists spoke with the seniors individually
advising them as to reactions and also possible interactions
to watch. This was well received by the seniors. Mr.
Khoury has offered to repeat this in the new year. On the
30th the Dutchess Co. Health Dept. provided a flu clinic at
Town Hall.
There were also fun activities this month besides all the
health related events. On the 16th the seniors had their
first T-shirt day party. All wore their Town of Wapping
Senior Center T-shirts. There was pizza for all and a great
Bingo afternoon.
On the 31st over 75 seniors enjoyed a Halloween party.
There were goblins, witches, ghouls and princesses at the
Center. Before lunch the Seniors had their annual Halloween
Costume Parade. Prizes were awarded for the best costumes.
Each senior in costume received treat bag full of goodies.
It was a fun day.
The senior's annual Craft Fair was held on the 25th and
was a great success. There were numerous crafts, a bake
sale, raffles, book sale, coffee and donuts and granny's
attic.
The trip to Pomona was wonderful! (so the seniors have
all said.> The last Town trip of the year is next month to
the Westchester Broadway Dinner Theater on the 6th.
There are 199 members registered at the Center and 191 on
the waiting list.

1. The Elks Christmas Party preparations are going well.
Sign up for this is scheduled for Nov. 7th at 10a.m.
2.. November events include a Thanksgiving luncheon at the
Elks Lodge on the 14th.

NOVEMBER 1996
WOW! You did it!!l This truly was the best craft fair
yet. CONGRATULATIONS! What a great day! I want to thank
all of " you for your hard work and contributions to our Craft
Fair. It was another great success and all because of YOU!
Thank you to those who helped set up the Fair, to those who
worked at tables during the Fair, to those who contributed
baked goods, handmade craft items, raffle items, granny's
attic items and other misc. items. And to all of you who
bought and sold raffle tickets. That pretty well sums it
up! Everyone contributed something to help make this the
very best, record breaking Fair we've had in the past six
years. And I want to take this opportunity to thank Regina
and Linda for all they do. Besides keeping you all busy,
they have to find time and ways to finish up or fix all the
projects I give them to do before the Fair. They both do an
outstanding job and help make it possible for us to have a
successful fair. So if yoU have a chance, give them an
extra hug and let them know we all appreciate all they do.
Proceeds of the Fair go towards our luncheons and parties,
especially towards our holiday festivities. The rewards are
soon to be reaped!l Read on....
Such a busy season! Before I go further, please note the
Center is closed on Nov. 5, Election Day, Nov. 11, Veteran's
Day, Nov. 28 & 29 for Thanksgiving Day and Digestion Day.
Our Thanksgiving luncheon will be held at the Elks Lodge
on Rt. 376 on Thurs. Nov. 14th at Noon. The menu includes
soup, salad, choice of Roast Beef, Roast Turkey or Broiled
Fish, dessert, coffee or tea. The cost to those current
with dues is $7.00. Those on the waiting list are welcome
to join us for this luncheon. Those not current with dues,
the cost is $'5.00. Sign up with me by Nov. 6th. Dial-a
Ride passengers, just call them if you are going to the

Luncheon.
The Creative Writing Class began in June. It is now held
on scheduled Thursdays at 9:30a.m. Check the calendar.
There is no pressure, no grades, just interesting and fun.
Try it! Ronnie Badowski has offered to lead this Creative
Writing Class. It includes short stories, or poetry or even
"Writing Your Memoirs." Ronnie has been writing for several
years as a hobby as well as semi-professionally. Creative
writing can be fun. Ronnie can help you organize your
thoughts for writing. Remember when you told your children
a story at bedtime? We all have a story to tell. It can be
a true story or fictitious. So think about it. Ronnie will
help you put your thoughts on paper. If you are interested
in this let me know or come in on a ,Thursday morn and try
it! GO FOR IT!
The Wappinger Lions Club needs old eyeglasses or hearing
aids. If you have any you no longer want or need, bring
them to the Center. I will see to it that they are given to
the Lions Club.
Addition: This month's newsletter has a word search and a
crossword puzzle at the end. Let me know if you would like
something like this as part of your newsletter. If there is
an interest in this, I will continue this addition. Any
other suggestions? Let me know. In fact if there are
suggestions regarding the program or any other Center
function, please let me know. Remember this is your Center!
Enjoy the poem by Sue Bush. The Creative Corner was
started so you all hav~ the opportunity to share your
creative writing, thoughts, drawing or cartoon. Come on
Seniors, let's see what your thoughts are! Need help? Join
the Writing Class! Don't be shy! Share your thoughts and
creativity with us!! !!I will include these in the
newsletter. We have many talented seniors at the Center.
Some do crafts, some paint or draw, some write poetry and/or
stories, some have wonderful and creative ideas. You may
submit your "writing" or even A drawing or cartoon to me at
any time. I am sure we will all enjoy reading or seeing the
creativity of our fellow senior~.
In regard to paying dues. Many of you are now paying
your dues on a yearly basis and for that your Treasurers
thank you. This has made bookkeeping much easier and
efficient. Many have chosen to do this as they cannot be at
the Center every week and want to participate in our special
events. Yearly dues is $25.00. Many of you pay on a
monthly basis and that too makes it easier to keep track of.
