The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Committee was held
February 4, 1997 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess
County, New York.
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph 1. Holt. Others
present were Kathi DeLisa Senior Citizen Director, Gerald diPiemo Recreation Director,
Committee Members Joseph Ennesser, Ronald Friedman, Barbara Gutzler, Ellen Kon, and
Stephen Miller.
The minutes of the January 10, 1997 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr.
Miller seconded by Miss Gutzler with all in favor.
Mr. Holt introduced Mr. diPiemo, our new recreation director, to all the members
of the committee and welcomed him.
OUTGOING CORRESPONDENCE

CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from Diane Quint, Division Director of the March of Dimes
requesting the use of the Castle Point Recreation Area on Sunday, April 27th for their annual
WalkAmerica. It was also requested that a porta john be available for their use. This request was
approved.

A note was received from Dick Beams from the Arlington High School requesting use of
the softball fields for several games during April and May. It was mentioned that Little League for
the Town has priority for the use of these fielc;ls and in looking at the schedule quickly, it was
noted that their games would conflict with the Town's usage. It was suggested that we could offer
the use of the Castle Point Lower Field. Mr. Miller will follow up on this request.
A request was received from Tim Fisher for the use of Robinson Lane Fields for the
National Adult Baseball League. The NABA season begins the first week in May and will run
until mid September. They would like the use of Holt field on Sundays with a few games to be
played on Saturday. Mr. Miller mentioned that they would have to be third in line after Little
League and the Rookie League. He will follow up on this request.
A letter was received from Tim Fisher with information regarding the National Adult
Baseball League.
A letter was received from Karl Balone of the Town of Wappinger Little League inviting
Mr. Holt to speak at their Opening Day ceremonies on April 19th with a rain date of April 26th. In
his letter he also requested porta-johns be placed at Robinson Lane. It was suggested that we place
3 porta johns there, one by the girls field, one by the building and the third one down by the
batting cages.
We received three letters requesting that the Sonny Carroll Band be featured at Schlathaus
Park for the Summer Concert Series. Mr. diPierno will be working on this.
An estimate for paving work was received from Blake Paving and Excavating for
handicapped parking and work at Airport Park. The estimate was for $3,660. Mr. Holt mentioned
that we had received a quote last fall from AmeriTech in the amount of approximately $7,500. For
the work. It was suggested that we try and get this paving work done as soon as possible.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the senior's activities for the month of January. This
report is attached to these minutes.
She also noted that because there are so many seniors on the waiting list that she has tried
to bring them in for certain activities. She has started a bridge program and one of the seniors has
volunteered to teach bridge. So far there has been a good response. It was suggested that maybe
we should think about opening up ScWathaus as a satellite center and have it open certain days and
for certain hours for special activities such as the bridge and pool etc. Mr. Ennesser mentioned
that he had spoken to someone regarding the purchase of a pool table for Schlathaus and the cost

would be between $1,800 and $2,000. for one that is a foot shy of regulation. The price includes
installation, delivery and the racks and equipment. Mrs. DeLisa mentioned that Mr. Tompkins
has mentioned to her that he knew someone also. For the time being we will use the one in the
garage to get started. The maintenance people have been in the building painting and trying to
clean the bathroom and kitchen. Camo mentioned that if the water was run more maybe the smell
would get better. There was a discussion on making the building handicapped accessible.
Mrs. DeLisa mentioned that Supervisor Smith has received funds for the construction of a
shuftleboard court at Town Hall in memory of a Town resident's parents. She is working on this.
Mrs. DeLisa mentioned that the exercise classes that are held in the meeting room on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are getting bigger. There are presently 25 - 27 people in the
class. She said that she has received many compliments on the exercise teacher Sue Borchardt.
RECREATION DIRECTOR'S REPORT
Mr. diPiemo mentioned that he has already been busy working on the concert schedule for
this summer. So far he has about 5 lined up such as The Phantoms, Wildeast, Switch In Time,
Woods Tea Company and of course the West Point Band.
CHELSEA BOAT RAMP
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that the Town Board had approved the request for additional
$6,000. for the new docks at Chelsea. He said that he has already been in contact with the vendor
and that there should be no problem having them ready to be put in the water by the end of April.
BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL PROGRAM
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that we have purchased a portable balance beam for the program
and Mr. Goldner is transporting it back and forth each week. This could also be used in the
summer program.
RYMER SUBDIVISION
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has done a rough layout of the Rymer Subdivision and he
showed it to the Committee members. He mentioned that he tried to keep most of the equipment
etc away from the closest neighbor and he showed a buffer area around his property. Mr. Holt

mentioned that the maintenance guys are using this layout to start to clear out some of the old
brush and dead trees.
GREENWAY GRANT
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that the Town received a $2,500. grant from the State for the
Greenway Trails. This grant is to be used at Reese Park for signage and trail clean-up. The
Federal grant is still pending.
PRECAST BUILDINGS
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has been looking into information for precast buildings
since we might be looking at buildings for Castle Point and in the future Rymer. He found that we
could get a 12' x 40' concrete modular for about $13,200. delivered and installed on our own
concrete base. The windows would come with the building. We would have to put in the water
and electric. The 20' by 40' precast would be about $47,000. This is something to keep in mind
for the future. He showed the members several picture of the modular.
RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has taken a notice to the U. S. Cablevision for the
Community Bulletin board regarding the Radio City Music Hall Trip on April 2nd. The cost is
$24.00 for a 2nd mezzanine seat. The bus will leave Town Hall at 9:00 a.m., the show is at 3:00
p.m. and the bus will leave for home immediately after the show. Mrs. Roe mentioned that we
have approximately 12 tickets left for the show. Mr. diPiemo said that he will be the escort for the
trip. Mr. Ennesser said that if we use Cablevision that the notices have to be in 2 weeks in
advance.
ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Holt mentioned that Little League has started to take things out of the store to start to
clean it. He asked Mr. Friedman to contact Mr. Smith to get the details regarding who is doing
the work etc. and to make sure that we are on top of what is being done.
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he has been in contact with A-I Fence Company regarding the
fence extension with net for the big league field. They are working on this.

TENNIS INSTRUCTION
Mrs. Korz mentioned that she has talked with Barry Casowitz, our tennis instructor, and he
said that he wanted to do something more for tennis and was interested in possibly running a
tennis tournament this year. He indicated that he would be willing to come in to one of our
meetings to discuss the details.
SPOOK HILL
Mr. Miller asked if we found out anything about the paint company and how to clean the
graffiti from the building. He said that if we got the number of the company he would be glad to
discuss it with them.
Mr. Holt mentioned that at Spook Hill there is not much for the children to use as shade. It
was suggested that we put in 4 or 5 stanchions and put up a permanent roof for just a shelter. We
are asking for an estimate on this. It won't be a lot but something that the children could get under
in case of rain etc. He also noted that the maintenance guys have been over to that site and have
cleaned out all the old brush and junk along the stream.. It obviously helps with the appearance of
the park. Mr. Holt mentioned that they have also cleaned up Martz Field.
Mr. Friedman mentioned that we should pave at least one handicapped parking space at
Spook Hill. We will look at this soon.
SCHLATHAUSPARK
Mr. Friedman asked Mr. Holt if Mr. Tompkins had talked to him about making the
Schlathaus building handicapped accessible. We do have a ramp on the side of the building but
the doors and bathroom are not accessible for wheelchairs. We would have to get estimates to
put in a larger door.
Mr. Friedman and Mr. Tompkins have met to discuss ways to improve the parking
situation at Schlathaus. It was felt that the entrance from All Angels was dangerous and that
maybe we should think about having an entrance from All Angels and an exit on to Old Myers
Comers. If we have seniors coming in and out we have to do something soon. It was mentioned
that we should have a plan and a time table in place for the handicapped upgrading.

Mr. Holt mentioned the following:

1. An ad will be placed in the Southern Dutchess News and the Poughkeepsie Journal for
a part time maintenance.
2. Since we wrote the letter to Supervisor Smith the electric at Castle Point has been
addressed. Mrs. Smith met or talked with Paul Ganci regarding this and Central Hudson is ready
to come to River Road and from the post with the transformer 5' in from the road on the right hand
side will put in the line. We will have to dig a trench 245'. Mr. Holt mentioned that Mr. Tompkins
will be speaking with Mr. Foster of the Highway Department to see if they could help with this.
We know that they have their own work to do but if they could help it would be great. If they can't
do it we will have to check with R.G. H. Once we get into the park we don't have to stay
underground. We hope that this work can be accomplished by April and if that is the case we will
have water at the Playground for this summer. Once the electric is done, we can move forward
with the second grant which is the construction of the building with the rest rooms etc. Mr.
Ennesser mentioned that maybe we should look into one of the precast buildings for the site. We
have also been told that the landfill will be covered this year. Miss Gutzler mentioned that in the
upper area she would like to put in a trail. Mr. Holt said that eventually we should build a cinder
track around the fence. Mr. Holt mentioned that we have not heard anything on the 3rd grant that
we have for the paving work (handicapped parking and walkways) for the building.
3. Mr. Holt mentioned that he received a call from the Boy Scout Troop leader suggesting
a project. They would like to plant some willow trees in our parks. The only problem we had with
this is that the trees are not deep rooted and are messy. We are not sure that they are the best thing
for our parks. We will think about this and we will discuss this at the next meeting.
4. Mr. Holt would like to see if there is any interest in establishing a summer basketball
program. He said that he has been approached by several people asking why the Town doesn't
have anything for the children 14-20 years old. We do have 3 outdoor basketball courts which
might need some work before we can have a program established. We would also have to see if
we could come up with people to coach the programs. In the meantime, Mr. Holt asked Mr.
Ennesser ifhe would check out the courts, check the surfaces and see if this would be physically
possible. The Committee was asked to give this suggestion some thought and we will discuss this
further. We really do need to do something for people in that age.
5. Mr. Holt mentioned that we have to start thinking about the registration for the Summer
Program. It was suggested that we use Schlathaus Park. Mr. Friedman said that the parking was
not good enough for doing it there. After a discussion it was suggested that maybe we should
contact Myers Comers to see if we can use the school for that purpose. Mr. diPierno will contact
Frank Carrone to see if that is feasible. We should try for some time during the middle of May.

FEBRUARY 1997 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY 1997
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
January activities at the Senior Citizen center included
the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, photo
club, exercise, line dancing, videos, bingo, puzzles,
creative writing, cards and games. The center was closed
Jan. 1, New Year's Day and Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Day.
68 Seniors participated in our annual Hat Dayon the 15th.
seniors designed and wore their creations. prizes were
given for the 4 best. pizza and soda for all. They also
celebrated a senior's 80th birthday.
On the 23rd, seniors enjoyed T-shirt Day. EVeryone wore
their wappinger Senior center T-shirt. had pizza, soda and
also a birthday party for our craft teacher Linda. All this
was followed by a great game of Bingo.
And another 80th birthday was held on the 29th. Our
regular monthly birthday party was held on the 30th. Blood
pressure was cancelled this month. It was a month of pizza
and birthday parties.
One of our seniors has offered to teach Basic Bridge to
seniors interested in learning. This is now scheduled for
Thurs. a.m. The first Bridge lesson was held on Jan. 30th.
There were 8 who participated. Three of these eight are
currently on our waiting list.
There are 196 members registered at the Center and 210 on
the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. February events will include a Valentine's Ball at
christos and a George Washington's birthday party as well as
other activities.
2. Up and coming events include a Giant Bingo Bango of
three Senior centers, ours, Zion Church and Fishkill to be
held at the zion Church on March 10. Also an Easter
luncheon at Mamma Marissa's and an Easter Egg surprise. In
APril, the three centers as mentioned above will join
together for a bowling party at Holiday Hoebowl.
3. Peg and I are working on the senior trips, and are
waiting for several price quotes.
4. I have had several compliments on our exercise/line
dancing teacher in the past weeks. She is doing an
excellent job. These classes are growing with over 25
participating for exercis~.

Did you know that Winter is half over? Well, it is! So
Can Spring be far behind? Nice thought for a cold winter
day, huh? But, it's not over till its over so to help us
through the second half of winter, read on!
On Feb. 14th, Valentine's Day we will have a Valentine's
Ball at Christos. There will be good food, dancing to the
music of Johnny Dell and lots of fun and surprises. Food,
includes appetizer, choice of Roast Beef, Chicken Marsala or
Broiled Salmon, dessert, coffee/tea. Cost for luncheon is
$9.00 for those current with dues. Yes, those on the
waiting list are welcome to join us. For those not current
with dues the ?bst is $18.00. You must sign up by Feb. 7th.
Dial a Ride passengers should call them if you are going.
BRIDGE ANYONE? Basic Bridge lessons will be taught on
Thurs. at 10:30a.m. by Henrietta MacDonald. It's a
challenging card game and once you learn you'll be addicted
to playing. Those who already know how to play, can plan on
playing Thurs. afternoons. Let me know if you are
interested or come in on Thursday and join the fun.
Please note the change in regard to Videos. Specific
videos are now scheduled. The days are also changed. Seems
we have too many other activities on Thurs. so videos will
be shown Tuesday or Friday. If you have a specific movie
you would like to see, let me know and I will schedule it
the following month. I hope this will make it easier for
those who want to see videos.
Other February news: The Heart Assoc. will provide blood
pressure screening on the 12th. We will celebrate
Washington's BIRTHDAY on the 21st with cherry pie and ice
cream, and our MONTHLY BIRTHDAY will be on the 28th. BINGO

COKING IN KARCH: We'll end winter with a bang! On March
10th, we will have another three Center GIANT BINGO! BANGO!
BONGO! to be held at the Zion Church. The cost will be
$2.00 per person and you must get a ticket! Final details
next month. Yes, you can sign up now. (remind me to give
you a ticket)
Also in March: Our EASTER LUNCHEON will be held at Mamma
Marissa's on Thur. March 20. Lunch will include soup,
choice of Veal Parmagiana, Chicken Francese or Eggplant
Rollatini, dessert, coffee/tea. The cost to those current
with dues is $8.00. Yes, those on the waiting list may
attend. Those not current with dues the cost is $18.00.
COKNING IN APRIL: BOWLING AT HOLIDAY HOEBOWL on April
7th. Zion Church seniors and Fishkill seniors will be
joining us. The cost for 3 games, coffee and danish, pizza
and soda is $3.00 for those current with dues. Yes, those
on the waiting list may attend. Those not current with dues
the cost is $6.00.
WANTED: If you have a craft project that you think others
would like to make, please bring them in to Regina and Linda
so we can share them. That's what crafts are all about. So
feel free to bring in projects for everyday for holidays or
whatever. Thank you.
The CREATIVE WRITING Class continues on Thurs. at
9:30a.m. If you are interested in joining let me know.
Don't be shy! It's fun and can be an exciting experience.
The WALKING CLUB continues.. .If you have not joined this
club yet, start now! Just add your name to the chart and
start walking. Six times around the Town Hall is a mile.
Just mark the number of times you walk around, I will
convert it to miles later. Walking is considered one of the
best physical exercises you can do for your health. It can
help reduce blood pressure, regulate insulin for diabetics,
keep your heart healthier and so much more. The goal for
walkers for 1997 is for each walker to do 10 more miles than
last year, or if just starting, you can make at least 10

The 2nd half of winter is here and the weather may still

get nasty. Please note Exercise and Line Dancing are
cancelled if the schools are closed due to snow or ice.
However, that does not necessarily mean the Center is

started for YOU to share your thoughts, drawings or
writings. So come on Seniors!
Are you interested in a MIND YOUR MIND workshop? This
would be a 2 hour workshop of exercing your mind by doing
games, puzzles and much more. Please let me know. If we
decide to do this, there will be a sign up for the workshop
and possibly a small fee of $3-$4 per person.
Anyone interested in tennis, golf, fishing? Anyone
interested in flower arranging, games such as Trivia, Price
is Right? LET ME KNOW! Any other suggestions regarding the
program or Center functions, let me know. Remember this is
your Center!
In regard to paying dues, many of you are now paying your
dues on a yearly basis and for that your Treasurers thank
you. This makes bookkeeping much easier and efficient. Many
choose to do this as they cannot be at the Center every week
and want to participate in our special events. Yearly dues
is $25.00. Many of you pay on a monthly basis and that too
makes it easier to keep track of. Those paying on a weekly
basis, the cost is $1.00 a week. The reason for this is
fairness. There are many who pay monthly or yearly and do
not come every week, but still pay their dues. Your
Treasurer says that for those paying dues by the month,
February dues is $2.00. Those on the waiting list are
welcome to pay dues. This entitles you to join our "out of
Center" activities at a reduced cost.

The plans that we made and the dreams we shared,
Were almost coming true.
