JANUARY 5, 1998
NEXT MEETING FEBRUARY 2, 1998 AT SCHLATHAUS PARK AT 7:00 P.M.
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was held January
5, 1998 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess County, New
York.
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Chairman Ralph J. Holt. Others present
were James Chappas, Joseph Ennesser, Ellen Korz and Stephen Miller. Kathi DeLisa, Senior
Citizen Director, arrived at 7:30 p.m.
Prior to the opening of the regular meeting interviews were held for the position of
Recreation Director. Those applying were: Barbara Gutzler, Stephen Lowery, Karen Karath, and
Maureen Irvin.
After interviewing the candidates with the exception of Miss Gutzler (since we had
talked to her last year and everyone was acquainted with her) a discussion was held regarding the
recommendation for the director. It was noted that all candidates were very well qualified and
after a discussion a vote was taken to send a letter to the Town Board to request that Steven
Lowery be appointed to the position.
The minutes of the December 1, 1997 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr.
Chappas seconded by Mrs. Korz with all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from Frank J. Carione, Principal of Myers Comers School
requesting that a representative from our group attend a meeting in the school gym on January 6,
1998 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting was to go over the breakdown and set up of the gym equipment,
procedures etc for the start of their gymnastics program in January. Mr. Holt will be there from
the Commission and Mrs. Roe has been able to contact Brenda Peura, Director of the Town
gymnastic program and Walter Leczinski of the Town Volleyball Program to attend this meeting.
A letter was received from Betsy Brockway, Executive Director of the Dutchess
County Youth Bureau noting that the Office of Children and Family Services has released
additional 1998 funding for recreation and service YDDP programs. The Town of Wappinger has
been allocated additional funds of$266.00 for recreation (Program Code No. 9813271OR033) for
a revised eligibility of$7,918.00.

A letter was received from Sebastian Carta, Jr. of the Dutchess Debs requesting
the use of Robinson Lane fields on July 24th, 25th and 26th. Mr. Friedman had checked with
Little League and found out that they are holding the Corey Castellano Tournament that
weekend. Mr. Friedman was going to contact Mr. Carta to see if they would be able to hold their
tournament the following week.
A letter was received. from Stephen A. Weinberg of the Hudson Valley Express
Girls Fastpitch Softball requesting the use of Robinson Lane Fields for their 1998 Invitational
Tournament scheduled for July 10 - 12, 1998. Again this time frame is during the scheduled
time of playoff's and we are not able to guarantee fields. Mr. Miller was requested to find out
how many fields will be needed, the number of games to be held and what the age groups were.
A letter was received from David H. Deitrick, Jr. of West Point indicating that the
Jazz Band has been scheduled to perform at Schlathaus Park on August 13, 1998. This brought
up a discussion on the West Point Concert Band's performance on April 17th as to whether we
have received permission to use Roy C. Ketcham as the performance site. Mrs. Roe indicated
that she had called the school to see if Mr. diPierno had requested the use of their facilities for
that date and was told that no formal request had been submitted. She then sent a request
application to the school on December 2nd. To date we have not received a reply. She will
contact the Dean's Office tomorrow to follow up on this request.
SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the Senior's activities for the month of
December. This report is attached to these minutes.
She also mentioned that the sound system that she has been using is not working.
She tried a different microphone and that was not the problem. It was suggested that maybe we
could look in to getting a new system with speakers that would be placed in the comers. With the
drop ceiling that should not be a problem. Mr. Ennesser said that he would take the current
system to Radio Shack to see if it could be fixed and also look in to pricing a new system. Even if
we get a new system, the current portable system could still be used outside or in different areas.
She noted that July 8th this year is the 10th Anniversary of the Senior Center and
she is looking for input on special things to do for the event.
It was noted that the Town Party at the Elks went well and Mr. Holt mentioned
that he had spoken to Mr. Massey about the possibility of running two parties in 1998. He also
mentioned this to Johnny Dell and he was also receptive to the suggestion. It was also noted that
Metzgers did a great job with preparing, slicing and delivering the turkey for the dinner.

~ORTP~SOCCER
Mr. Holt asked Mr. Chappas to thank soccer for their gifts for the children's
Christmas Party at Schlathaus. They really did a good job.
Mr. Chappas mentioned that soccer would like to get water at Airport. The
volunteers find it very difficult to clean up and find that they have to cart in water everyday for
general clean up. Mr. Holt mentioned that he did not know if a well could be dug out there. Mr.
Holt said that he would talk to Mr. Paggi about it.
The alarm system has been installed at Airport Park and Mrs. Roe indicated that
she had spoken with Mr. Laman regarding the call names for the alarms. All the paperwork has
been sent to Centurion Security and we are waiting to hear that the system is now working. Mrs.
Roe will contact Mr. Blecka of Centurion to see what the status is.
ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Ennesser asked if the building at Robinson Lane had been cleaned out and Mr.
Holt said that it had and that all the appliances had been turned off. They did a good job cleaning
it.
A discussion was held regarding the placement of lights on one or two of the fields
at Robinson Lane. It was mentioned that the work might be able to be done for about $60,000.
It was suggested that this item be put on a later agenda for discussion.
BOAT RAMP
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he is working on the second phase of the dock
system. He is going to see Supervisor Smith to ask about talking to Attorney to the Town Al
Roberts about the Town tieing into the wall at the Chelsea Yacht Club. Even if this does not
come to pass we will still be able to put the additional finger on the ramp.
SCHLATHAUS PARK
Mr. Ennesser mentioned the Community Development grant for the upgrade at
Schlathaus Park has been approved by the Town Board and will be forwarded to the County. It
was recommended that if this grant is not approved for funding that we ask the Town Board to do
the project from Parkland funds.
Mr. Holt mentioned that the alarm system at Schlathaus is not working well. The
back up system has been blown and if we have any power outages or surges the alarm will keep

going off. We had Mr. Blecka out from Centurion Security System and he did a temporary fix
but he told us that at least the back up system should be replaced (ifhe could find that type). He
mentioned that it might we wiser to replace the system with an updated system. Mrs. Roe will
contact him for a price on a new back up system and a updated system.
REESE PARK
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that they have gone out for a 2nd Dupont grant for Reese
Park. He mentioned that they have done a good job down there clearing out the area around the
Pond.
CASTLE POINT.
Mr. Holt mentioned that they should be starting the landfill at Castle Point in the
next two weeks and that he was told that we should have no problem with holding our summer
playground back at that site. They should be getting ready to do the foundation of the building
and that should be ready for the playground season.
PROGRAMS
We are still looking for someone to do the Wednesday Night basketball program at
the Jr. High. We have used Bob Considine, Bernie Roe and Mr. Holt so far this season. If
anyone knows of anyone who would be able to finish up the season (to the end of February) let
Mrs. Roe know.
Weare also looking for someone to run the Boys and Girls Basketball program at
Sheafe Road. This program usually runs from January to March on Saturday mornings from
10:00 to 12:00. It is a program that teaches the fundamentals to children ages 7 tp 12. For the
time being that program is on hold. We are still hoping to have the program.
Mrs. Roe has been in touch with Art Goldner and Brenda Peura and have given
them all the information for sign up for the Gymnastic Program. Registration is January 10th with
the actual program starting on the 17th.
Walter Leczinski is all set for the Adult Volleyball Program at Myers on Tuesday
Nights at 6:30 and Mrs. Roe will be doing the registration for the Women's Aerobic Program on
Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Jr. High also at 6:30. Patricia "Dr' Reese will again run this
program

A discussion was held on the calendar of events that we would like to put out and
the hot line we would like to install at Schlathaus Park.
SUBDIVISION LANDS OF KABLAOUI -
The Lands ofKablaoui is a 20 lot subdivision on New Hackensack Road and St.
Nicholas Road. The subdivision plat was reviewed and it was noted that no land was set aside
for Recreation purposes. It was also noted that a lot of the area was wet. It was therefore
decided that in light of the two other recreation areas (Airport Park and Quiet Acres) in this
vicinity that we would like to request money in lieu of land.
SUBDIVISION GIGLIOTTI
This is a 6 lot subdivision on Route 376 north of Myers Corners and South of
Diddell. After reviewing this subdivision plat it was again recommended that the Recreation
Commission receive money in lieu of land.
Mr. Holt mentioned that he would be away from January 28th to March 2nd.
Mr.Ennesser will be acting chairman.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 on a motion by Mr. Ennesser seconded by
Mrs. Korz.

JANUARY 1998 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 1997
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
December activities at the senior Citizen center included
the regular schedule of arts/crafts, oil painting, photo
club, exercise, line dancing, videos, bingo, puzzles,
bridge, Spanish class, cards and games.
On Dec. 5, 129 seniors enjoyed our annual Center
christmas party at villa Borghese. Music by Johnny Dell,
santa arrived with gifts for all. Dancing, good food and a
fun day to start the seniors towards a happy holiday.
On Dec. 10th 192 Town seniors were treated to a
spectacular Christmas dinner at the Elks Lodge. This was
made possible by generous donations from local
businesspersons and local professionals. This event has
become so popular the possibility of two parties is being
discussed.
Then on the 18th over 90 seniors enjoyed "a little"
holiday party at the center with bagels, juice, egg nog and
other goodies brought in.
It was a party month. The seniors also donated food and
gift items for a needy family and a Christmas dinner to
another needy family.
There are 196 seniors registered at the center and 236 on
the waiting list.
January events include Hat Day and Clash Day.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. Our portable sound system is not working. would like
to buy a more permanent system as the center is quite noisy
with so many seniors.
2. June 8th marks the center's 10th anniversary. would like
to give each senior a token rememberance.
3. plans need to be started now if 2 Christmas parties are
to take place next year at the Elks.

JANUARY 1998
HAPPy NEW YEAR!!! May the New Year bring happiness,
health, love, laughter, joy, new friends, fun and lots of
new parties! A very happy and healthy New Year to each and
everyone.
Before we settle down to January happenings, Regina,
Maria and I would like to thank you all for your generous
and wonderful Christmas gifts and wishes. We truly
appreciate all you do for us. And I want to thank you all
for your additional support and love this holiday season.
Your sincere thoughts and concern for me are overwhelming
and have truly helped me through this Christmas season.
Thank you all so much and Big HUG for all of you!!!
Have you made your New Year's Resolutions? Need time to
think about them before we resume more parties? Need some
time to rest? Well, one of my resolutions is more parties,
new ideas, new activities. But I need some help. Your
help. What is it that YOU would like to do? What DIFFERENT
ACTIVITIES would YOU like to have? Please let me know. This
is your Center, your time. On the last page of this
newsletter is attached a WISH LIST. Please fill out and put
on my desk. You don't have to sign it unless you want. I
will do my best to fulfill your wishes. Some may not be
possible, others may take some time, but I promise you, I
will take all wishes, ideas and suggestions seriously and
will do my best to make your wishes come true.
Now on to January activities. On Jan 7th. Our Tax
Assessor, Linda, will be at the Center to explain THE STAR
PROGRAM. Linda will answer your questions and explain the
tax savings to you. Don't miss this! You will be able to
save money on your property taxes.
On Jan. 15th we will have our annual HAT DAY!! Come to
the Center wearing your craziest hat creation. Check your
closets, junk drawers, craft boxes or whatever and create a
crazy hat. Hats can be pretty, crazy, silly, droopy, goofy,

ugly. Just have fun. Prizes for the best! !!!!
On Jan. 28th, we will have a CLASH DAY! Today is the day
to wear clothes that clash! Plaids and stripes? Red and
orange? Crazy clothes? Got the idea? Wear anything that
doesn't go together? Anyway, we can have some fun and some
food too?
Other January news: Blood pressure (now the 2nd Thurs.>
is on the 8th. Birthdays will be celebrated on the 28th.
Rememeber, those with birthdays are asked to bring a cake
for the party. We will all help you celebrate. BINGO DAYS
are Wed. Jan. 7th and 21st, Thurs. the 15th and 29th and
Fri. the 30th. The Center is closed on New Year's Day Jan.
1 and Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 19th.
Thank you all for your generous contributions to the
needy family of five and for the Christmas dinner basket for
a needy family. There were lots of canned goods as well as
gifts for the children. With the monies donated I bought a
gift certificate to Shop Rite for the family of five.
Because.of your geneosity, two families had a much nicer
Christmas.
So far, no one I spoke to wants to return to the Best
Western for a luncheon. Now, as you know, the management
gave us 50% off the bill. There is a refund due each of
you. Many have chosen to apply this refund to their dues
which makes bookkeeping a little easier. If you have not
received your refund feel free to see me about this.
The WALKING CLUB continues..lf you would like to join the
Walking Club start now! A chart is hanging on the door.
Just add your name and start walking. Six times around the
Town Hall is a mile. Just mark the number of times you walk
around, I will convert it to miles later. We do recommend
you walk with someone. Use the "BUDDY" system when
possible. Walking is considered one of the best physical
exercises you can do for your health It can help reduce
blood pressure, regulate insulin for diabetics, keep your
heart healthier and so much more. Goal for 1998 Walkers:
To do 10 more miles this year than last year. If you are
just starting, you can make at least 10 miles your goal.
That is only 60 times around the building in a year or 5
time around a month. Start now!
Enjoy the poem by Sue Bush. The Creative Corner was
started for YOU to share your thoughts, drawings or
writings. So come on Seniors! Let's see your "stuff."
WINTER/SNOW POLICY: Please note Exercise and Line
Dancing will cancelled if the schools are closed due to snow

or ice. However, that does not necessarily mean the Center
is closed. For CENTER CLOSING INFORMATION please listen to
WEOK; 1390 AM or 1340 AM or 92.7 FM on your radio.
In regard to paying dues, many of you are now paying your
dues on a yearly basis and for that your Treasurers thank
you. This makes bookkeeping much easier and efficient. Many
choose to do this as they cannot be at the Center every week
and want to participate in our special events. Yearly dues
is $25.00. Many of you pay on a monthly basis and that too
makes it easier to keep track of. A few of you are NOT
current with dues, this may result in your paying full price
for the upcoming luncheons! Your Treasurer says that for
those paying dues by the month, January dues is $2.00.
Those on the waiting list are welcome to pay dues. This
entitles you to join our "out of Center" activities at a
reduced cost.
