RECREATION COMMISSION MINUTES
FEBRUARY 2,1998
NEXT MEETING MARCH 2, 1998 AT 7:00 P.M. AT SCHLATHAUS PARK
The regular meeting of the Town of Wappinger Recreation Commission was held
February 2, 1998 at Schlathaus Park, All Angels Hill Road, Town of Wappinger, Dutchess
County, New York.
The meeting was called to order by Acting Chairman Joseph Ennesser. Mr. Holt was
absent. Other members present were: Kathi DeLisa, Senior Citizen Director, Stephen Lowery,
Recreation Director and Commission Members Ronald Friedman, Ellen Korz and Stephen Miller.
The minutes of the January 5, 1998 meeting were approved on a motion by Mr. Miller
seconded by Mrs. Korz.

CORRESPONDENCE
A letter was received from Linda Klocker, Walk Coordinator of the March of Dimes Walk
America. She requested the use of the Castle Point Recreation area on Sunday, April 26 for their
1st and 3rd checkpoints along with the use of porta johns. She requested that the park be opened
no later than 7:30 a.m. on that date. Prior to the meeting, Mrs. Roe contacted Ms. Klocker to
find out how much of the park they would need in light of the construction work that will be
taking place. She assured us that they would only be using the pavilion and the porta john.
Approval was, therefore, given for her to use the site for her walk. A letter so stating will be sent
to her with a request for a certificate of insurance to be on file with us prior to the walk date.
A letter of resignation was received from Barbara Gutzler effective immediately. A letter
of thanks will be sent to her.
A letter was received from Dory D' Agostino of the Southern Dutchess Women's Softball
League requesting the use of the Castle Point fields for their leagues softball teams. They would
like to use the 2 fields Monday thru Friday from April 1 until September 30, 1998. 'they would
also like the use of the fields to playa double elimination Keith J. Memorial Tournament on April
25, 1998. Mr. Ennesser mentioned that he had spoken with Mr. Paggi about the site work to be
done and was assured that the work would only be taking place during the day and not on the
weekends. We were also told that the roadway going down to the fields would be kept open
during this time. Approval was, therefore, given for this request. Mr. Miller will follow up with
the necessary paperwork. He will also notify them of the construction work and the possible
parking limitations.
A letter was received from Karen Karath thanking us for taking the time to speak with her
about the Recreation Director position.

SENIOR CITIZEN REPORT
Mrs. DeLisa handed out a report on the Senior activities for the month of January. This
report is attached to these minutes.
RECREATION DIRECTOR REPORT
Mr. Lowery mentioned that he has already set up a web page on the Internet for the
Wappinger Recreation. The access is http://www.angelfire.com/ny/WappingersRecreation/
index.html. Steve's e-mail addressforrecreationisWpngersRec@aol.com.
He also mentioned that he has been working on the various summer concerts and has two
in place so far. Scheduled for August 6 is "Steve Max" - a family comedy show and on 6/25 he
has scheduled "Old Men In Basement" a 60, 70, 80's group.
He mentioned that he would also like to do a calendar for all the summer events.
He has been talking to various bus companies regarding a trip to either Foxwood or
Mohegan Sun. He is trying to work out something for Sunday, March 22 with the bus leaving
Town Hall at 8:00 a.m. and returning at 7-7:30. He is also looking into other trips such as the
YankeeIMets or Texas game, a trip to the Saratoga Races, and the U.S.Open. It was also
suggested that maybe he look into the West Point Football game.
ROBINSON LANE
Mr. Friedman mentioned that he has spoken with the contact for the Dutchess Debs and
they will not be using Robinson Lane for their tournament July 24, 25 and 26 as previously
requested. They have a conflict with a state or national tournament.
Mr. Friedman mentioned that Peter Egbert of Vassar College had contacted the
Recreation Office regarding a possible summer baseball camp to be held at Robinson Lane. He
spoke with Mr. Egbert about this and was told that he would like the Town to set up the
program, collect the money and hire him to just run the program. The funds would go 60% to
him with 40% to the Town. The Commission voted not to approve this request.
Mr. Miller mentioned that he has tried to contact the Hudson Valley Express coordinators
and he left messages for them to return his call. He noted that July 5 the date they would like to
use Robinson Lane is when Little League is in competition and we cannot guarantee what fields
would be available for their use. If Little League needs the field they are out. He said that he
would personally talk to either Breland Edwards or Stephen Weinberg regarding this request. He
also will tell them that the concession stand usage has to be worked out with Little League.

DOCKS
Mr. Ennesser mentioned that we have received permission from the Town Board at their
January 26 meeting to proceed with the second phase of the boat ramp with Ecological
Specialities. This is the company who did the first phase of the system. He also mentioned that he
has a meeting set for Wednesday, February 4th with the company to go over the plans. He also
mentioned that at the January 26 Town Board meeting Mr. Bettina complained about the parking
for the boat ramp. We will be invited to attend a workshop to go over the plan in the near future.
ICE SKATING/ROCKINGHAM
If the weather ever cooperates, which doesn't look too promising, we have received the
skating/no skating signs for Rockingham. Mr. Ennesser has also talked to Bob Smith of Chris
Bar Electric regarding the installation of a couple of lights for skating at that site.
SIGN FOR TENNIS
Mr. Ennesser has been looking at prices for a display sign to be placed at the tennis courts
and has found a price of about $365. for a vinyl one with plexi panels.
PROPOSED COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR SENIORS
Weare looking to put in place a computer program for seniors to be held at Schlathaus
Park. We are also looking for donations of computers of at least a 486/ or a 386. Mr. Gene
Damn has donated one already and it is presently in Mrs. DeLisa's office. Mr. Ennesser
mentioned that his wife is checking at John Jay to see if anyone would be willing to volunteer to
teach the seniors. It was also suggested that maybe we contact ffiM or possibly Laederal for old
computers. A letter will be written to the Town Board for permission to proceed with this plan.
INFORMATION SHEET
Mrs. Roe presented an information sheet with basic data on the Town of Wappinger
Recreation Programs. It was suggested that we insert this information in the water bills when
they are sent out. We need to get information out to the residents since most do not subscribe to
the Southern Dutchess News.

WEST POINT CONCERT
Mrs. Roe mentioned that she has been in contact with Roy C. Ketcham High School and
we have received permission to use their facilities for the West Point Concert Band on April 17th.
Since that is a normal vacation time for the schools, we will have to pay the custodial overtime for
the entire time we use the school. Mrs. Roe mentioned to Mr. Lowery that he should contact
West Point to verify the time for the concert. It was not sure whether a definite time of7:30 was
set or not. Mrs. Korz and Mr. Miller will look into getting someone to provide the buffet after
the concert. During the month of March we will have to concentrate on doing the advertising
for the concert.
PLAYGROUND INFORMATION
It was mentioned that the landfill work at Castle Point is scheduled to go from April until
the end of July and therefore we will be unable to hold the playground at that site. Mr. Miller was
again asked to contact Evans School for permission to use their property for the Castle Point
program. Since we used that site last year we have all the safety plan information in place. The
dates for the playground were set for June 29 to August 14. Mr. Lowery will check on setting up
registration dates so that they are available to be approved at the March meeting.
This year in the budget, we placed a line item for shirts for the participants of the
playground program. This is actually a safety feature that we feel should be in place especially
on field trips. It is our intention to have each playground have a different colored shirt and that
shirt would have the Town of Wappinger Recreation Playground Logo on it. This shirt must be
worn on any trip or special event the Town participates in. Because of this expenditure, it was
suggested that a letter be written to the Town Board suggesting that the fees for the program be
raised to incorporate at least the cost of the shirt. It was decided that a letter be sent to the Town
Board requesting that the fee be raised from $15.00 for the first family member and $10.00 for
each additional family member to $30.00 for the first family member and $20.00 for each
additional member. We feel that the Town residents are still receiving a bargain for the 7 weeks
of playground.
BASKETBALL COURT AT ROBINSON LANE
Several months ago, the Commission discussed the possibility of putting a basketball court
out at the Robinson Lane Recreation Area. It was felt that this area could be used for activities
when Little League is not in session and it would be a nice addition to the summer playground
program. A discussion was held on the possible placement of this court and whether it should be
only a half court or a whole court. Two suggestions were made regarding its placement with the
first being between Field 11 (SB-3) and Field #10 (SL-l) and the other being by the batting cages.
Mr. Ennesser will meet with Mr. Tompkins to discuss its placement and Mr. Tompkins will then

see about getting some quotes for the construction.
ANNUAL REPORT
The annual report for the recreation activities for 1997 was handed out. This report
included information on the recreation programs, the summer program and the senior citizen
program. Mr. Friedman mentioned that he was impressed with the report that was prepared by
Maureen Irvin for the summer playgrounds and felt that a letter should be written to her thanking
her for the impressive report.
SWIMMING
In recent months there has been some discussion regarding swimming facilities for the
Town of Wappinger. Each commission member was asked to look into this subject and bring
back information on other facilities in nearby localities i.e. size, cost estimates, parking facilities,
building (concession and rest room facilities) etc. It was also suggested that some thought be put
into location for such a facility.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m. on a motion by Mr. Miller seconded by Mrs.
Korz.

FEBRUARY 1998 REPORT TO THE RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE MONTH OF JANUARY 1998
SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER
January activities at the senior citizen center included
the regular of arts/crafts, oil painting, photo club,
exercise, line dancing, bingo, puzzles, bridge Spanish
class, cards and games.
On Jan. 7th, our Town Assessor was at the center to
explain the Star program and to answer the many questions
seniors have regarding this.
On the 15th, over 60 seniors participated in our annual
Hat Day. seniors decorated and designed their own hats.
prizes were awarded for the best, most original, funniest
and prettiest. Pizza was served for lunch and then a big
game of bingo followed.
On the 28th, over 75 seniors participated in Clash Day.
The seniors dressed in outfits that would definitely make
the worst Dressed look good. Again prizes were awarded for
the very worst combination of clothes and colors. To top
off Clash Day, we had a B-B Que. BUrgers and hot dogs were
cooked outside on the grill. Many thanks to Recreation
Maintenance for their help with this event. All had a great
time and enjoyed this unusual day.
Blood pressure was held on the 8th. Our monthly birthday
party was held on the 28th.
There are 194 seniors registered at the Center and 237 on
the waiting list.
ITEMS TO BE NOTED:
1. Peg and I are working on the senior bus trip schedule.
2. February events include a Hollywood Gala and small
valentine party.
3. Maria Borges, our part time craft assistant fell on the
ice on Jan. 16th and broke her leg in 2 places. She will
not be able to work for about 6-8 weeks. Regina will be
working in her place until she returns.

FEBRUARY 1998
Well, January is behind us. In fact winter is half over.
Spring will be here before you know it. We must hurry and
get a winter party in soon. Something to cheer us through
the rest of the dreary, cold and snowy days.
Also, most of you must know by now, Maria fell on the ice
(that icy day) and broke her leg in two places. She is home
and recoveririg. She will be out for approx. 6 weeks. She
thanks all of you for your prayers, thoughts and cards.
On Wed. Feb. 18th, we will have a HOLLYWOOD GALA of
LEGENDARY STARS to be held at the Holiday Inn, Fishkill at
noon. What is this you ask? Well, it's kinda like Academy
Awards but different. Johnny Dell will be there to play
some of your favorite show tunes to sing and dance to of
course. You can even come as your favorite movie star, or
bring something that reminds you of your favorite movie,
actor or actressr or just come ready to enjoy the
celebration of Legendary Stars. You might want to bring
along an acceptance speech in case YOU are chosen to accept
an Award. There will be Awards for Favorite movie, musical,
song, actor, actress, Western, cowboy/girl and lots more.
Now to find out what movie etc. gets the award, it's
necessary for everyone attending this Gala to fill out
Nominations for Academy Awards. Think back over the years.
What movie or actor,etc. stands out in your memory? If you
did not get one or see the flyer previously put out, see me
soon for a copy. You need to sign up for the GALA by Feb.
11th. At the time of sign up, you must turn in the
nomination ballot. Choice of entrees include: Clark Gable's
London Broil, Sophia Loren's Chicken Francese or Ester
Williams Stuffed Filet of Sole. Cost of the luncheon for
those current with dues is $9.00. This is open to those on
the waiting list too. If dues are not current, cost is
$20.00. Don't miss this one, should be fun!
Now other fun things in Feb: On Fri.,Feb. 6th, Regina

4 will do a craft class making Valentine pins. If you would
like to do this project, please sign up on the sheet
provided. The class will begin at 10:30a.m. Make one for
the house, one for yourself.
On Fri., Feb. 13th, maybe you'll even get a Valentine
from a secret admirer or secret pal or someone??? Guess who?
Other February news: Blood pressure (now the 2nd Thurs.)
is on the 12th. Birthdays* will be celebrated on the 26th.
BINGO DAYS are Wed. Feb. 11th and 25th, Thurs. the 5th and
19th. The Center is closed on President's Day, Feb. 16th.
* REGARDING BIRTHDAYS!!!!! On the wish list, many of you
requested that a cake be bought each month for the party
instead of each birthday person bringing a cake. Well, your
wish shall be granted. (you get 2 more wishes, teehee, just
kidding) Beginning this month, I will buy a cake for all of
us to celebrate the birthdays of the month. Of course cakes
are always welcome. Now see folks, how easy it is. If you
want something or don't like something just ask. You never
know, let me know, your wish might even come true.
Speaking of the WISH LIST. I am still waiting for the
REST OF YOU to turn your WISH LIST in. I will keep some
copies by the sign in sheet just in case you misplaced the
one on last months newsletter. The feed back from the few
returned has been very helpful, enlightening and in some
cases surprising. Thank you to all of you who have taken
the time and effort to do this and to speak up. Remember,
you need to tell me what you want or do not want. (I failed
the mind reading class in college.) There were a few ideas
I would like to mention so more of you can comment on them.

Several seniors have commented that there are too many
parties, yet other seniors say yes we want more parties.
Well, I'll see what I can do to please both sides here.
However, there were several who felt that some of the funds
should be used to help those in need, less fortunate etc.
Personally, I think that would be super and that most of you
would agree with this. So if not, you need to tell me. To
do this effectively, it would help to have a Community
Service Committee. Just a small group of you maybe 3 or 4

There are some other real neat ideas for example showing
videos in the morning from 10:30-noon instead of the

afternoon, having fruit served occasionally, well, there's
lots more and I will continue to put these ideas to yoU in
the upcoming newsletters. (see, I am at home doing this and
the wish list sheets are at the Center and I can't remember
all the ideas.> If you have not turned your wish list in or
if you have more to say, pick up a wish list by the sign in
sheet.
COKING IN MARCH: St. Patty'S Day Celebration, BOWLING AT
HOLIDAY HOE BOWL on March 30th with Zion and Fishkill,
Easter Craft Class.
COKING IN APRIL: Easter lunch? Where do you want to

The WALKING CLUB continues..lf you would like to join the
Walking Club start now! A chart is hanging on the door.
Just add your name and start walking. Six times around the
Town Hall is a mile. Just mark the number of times you walk
around, I will convert it to miles later. We do recommend
you walk with someone. Use the "BUDDY" system when
Possible. Walking is considered one of the best physical
exercises you can do for your health It can help reduce
blood pressure, regulate insulin for diabetics, keep your
heart healthier and so much more. Goal for 1998 Walkers:
To do 10 more miles this year than last year. If you are
just starting, you can make at least 10 miles your goal.
That is only 60 times around the bUilding in a year or 5
time around a month. Start now!

WINTER/SNOW POLICY: Please note Exercise and Line
Dancing will cancelled if the schools are closed due to snow
or ice. However, that does not necessarily mean the Center
is closed. For CENTER CLOSING INFORMATION please listen to
WEOK; 1390 AM or 1340 AM or 92.7 FM on your radio.
In regard to paying dues, many of you are now paying your
dues on a yearly basis and for that your Treasurers thank
you. This makes bookkeeping much easier and efficient. Many
choose to do this as they cannot be at the Center every week
and want to participate in our special events. Yearly dues
is $~5.00. Many of you pay on a monthly basis and that too
makes it easier to keep track of. A few of you are NOT
current with dues, this may result in your paying full price
for the upcoming luncheons! Your Treasurer says that for
those paying dues by the month, February dues is $2.00.

Those on the waiting list are welcome to pay dues. This
entitles you to join our "out of Center" activities at a
reduced cost.
